A Life Of Andrew Ferrari, C.M., Joseph Rosati C.M. Apr 1986

A Life Of Andrew Ferrari, C.M., Joseph Rosati C.M.

Vincentian Studies

This life of the highly esteemed Andrew Ferrari, one of the first Vincentians in the United States, describes his personal qualities and virtues. From 1816 until his death in 1822, he worked near Bardstown and in Vincennes, St. Louis, and New Orleans; his ministry had impressive variety despite the fact that he was often ill. He died of yellow fever after tirelessly administering sacraments to persons who were sick. The article gives insight into the Vincentians’ first activities in America, which were often undertaken in the face of considerable hardship.

Growth And Debt: Mexico And The United States In The Medium Term, Sven W. Arndt, Donald R. Lessard, Clark W. Reynolds

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Mexico and the United States are at an historic crossroad. Earthquake, oil prices, and domestic inflation have dramatically worsened Mexico's economic situation in the past year, more than offsetting the beneficial effects of lower international interest rates. Trade, financial, and employment relations between the two countries are threatened at the very time when their economic and social interdependence is growing. While temporary relief has been gained from recent agreements with the IMF, World Bank, and other international institutions, condition on commercial bank acceptance, even if all the terms are met much remains to be done.

Race And Class In American Race Relations Theory, 1894-1939, Vernon Williams Jr. Jan 1986

Race And Class In American Race Relations Theory, 1894-1939, Vernon Williams Jr.

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

The purpose of this essay is to identify the origins of the debate between Wilson and Pinkney. The period covered focuses on the years 1894 to 1939 - from the publication of Franz Boas's "Human Faculty as Determined by Race" in the Proceedings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1894, to the publications of Robert E. Park's "The Nature of Race Relations" in 1939. It is my argument that the parameters of the discussion regarding the progressiveness of race relations in the United States were defined during these years, and that all current theories are but …

A Statutory Analysis Of The Right Of U.S. Lawyers To Practice In Japan, Cecelia Norman Jan 1985

A Statutory Analysis Of The Right Of U.S. Lawyers To Practice In Japan, Cecelia Norman

Michigan Journal of International Law

This note argues that the JFBA's position is legally untenable. There is no legal bar to the establishment of firms by U.S. attorneys unlicensed to practice in Japan, provided they restrict their activities to advising non-Japanese companies on foreign and international law. Two central issues shape this debate: (1) the extent of the bengoshi monopoly conferred by the Lawyer Law; and (2) the scope of Japan's obligation to the United States under the Treaty of Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation (FCN Treaty) concluded in 1953.

Foreign Demand For United States Higher Education: A Study Of Developing Countries In The Eastern Hemisphere, Vinod B. Agarwal, Donald R. Winkler Jan 1985

Foreign Demand For United States Higher Education: A Study Of Developing Countries In The Eastern Hemisphere, Vinod B. Agarwal, Donald R. Winkler

Economics Faculty Publications

(First Paragraph) Foreign student enrollments in the United States have increased rapidly over the past 25 years. The total number increased from 36,494 in 1954 to 336,990 in 1982. While foreign students still represent less than 2% of all higher education enrollments in the United States, this proportion is likely to grow over the next decade as enrollments of American citizens decline. One consequence of the growth to date has been that many colleges and universities depend on foreign students for an important part of their tuition revenue or enrollment-determined budget, and this dependence is also likely to grow over …

Legal Practice Shaped By Loyalty To Tradition: The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Carolyn R. Ruis Jan 1985

Legal Practice Shaped By Loyalty To Tradition: The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Carolyn R. Ruis

Michigan Journal of International Law

This note employs Saudi Arabia as an example of an Islamic country that has retained its religious traditions while being forced by economic necessity to adopt some Western commercial practices. Part I reviews the legal system of Saudi Arabia, highlighting the major differences and similarities between it and Western commercial law. Part II considers the legal requirements and cultural norms which Western attorneys should be prepared to observe while practicing in a traditional Islamic society. It suggests that strict adherence to custom and the Saudi Government's recent attempts to strengthen restrictions on both the professional and personal lives of expatriates …
