Vincentian Missions Among Native Americans, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D. Oct 1989

Vincentian Missions Among Native Americans, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

The founders of the American Vincentians, Felix De Andreis and Joseph Rosati, considered the conversion of the Native Americans one of the main purposes of the American mission, although this was not an official objective. Efforts to this end were relatively few due to a lack of personnel and resources, and the more urgent need to serve American Catholics. In 1824, while ministering to Catholics in the Arkansas Territory, John Mary Odin and John Timon said mass among the Kappas-on-Arkansas (Quapaw). In 1837, other Vincentians went to the Osages in what is now Oklahoma. These two ventures were considered major …

An Analysis Of The Water Situation In The United States: 1989-2040, Richard W. Guldin, Usda Forest Service Sep 1989

An Analysis Of The Water Situation In The United States: 1989-2040, Richard W. Guldin, Usda Forest Service

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Several Federal agencies have historically had responsibilities for conducting assessments of the Nation's water resources. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Department of Agriculture's Soil Conservation Service (SCS), and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and its predecessor agencies, among others, have conducted studies assessing the current situation and future prospects for water in particular regions of the country. Responsibility for national water assessments was assigned to the U.S. Water Resources Council (WRC) by the Water Resources Planning Act of 1965. With the demise of the WRC in 1981, several member agencies have attempted to take …

Containment, Cliency And The Revolution In Vietnam, Deborah Tompsett-Makin May 1989

Containment, Cliency And The Revolution In Vietnam, Deborah Tompsett-Makin

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This thesis addresses the question, why does U.S. foreign policy contribute to political instability in developing nations? To ascertain the answer, it analyzes the post-World War II administrations from Truman through Johnson. One mode of containment, cliency, a foreign policy relationship between a major power and a weaker state, is developed within the framework analyzing containment. The cliency model provides a theoretical basis for explaining how the domestic structure of the client state is systematically distorted by the patron's actions in pursuit of its global interests. The cliency model is also linked to the pattern of development and stability of …

Corporate Risk Management And Risk Communication In The European Community And The United States, Michael S. Baram Apr 1989

Corporate Risk Management And Risk Communication In The European Community And The United States, Michael S. Baram

Faculty Scholarship

The responsibility of private firms to communicate hazard and risk information to government officials and persons at risk has emerged as one of the central features of corporate risk management in the European Community ("E.C.") and the United States ("U.S."). This function is commonly described as "risk communication."' In both the E.C. and the U.S., new legal requirements and public attitudes now promote corporate disclosure of hazard and risk information on an unprecedented scale.

Corporate risk management is a vast, complex field of activity that is largely unaddressed by commentators and unknown to the general public in both industrial societies. …

Equal Protection- The Social Dimension Of European Community Law, T. Koopmans Jan 1989

Equal Protection- The Social Dimension Of European Community Law, T. Koopmans

Michigan Journal of International Law

There are two reasons for drawing attention to the social dimension of European Community law. First, the EEC treaty comprises different provisions on social policy whose importance is consistently underestimated: the treaty is often considered as merely establishing a "common market" and as only concerning economic problems. This approach is prominent in the United States, where the business world is primarily interested in trade with, and within, the common market, and where much literature is devoted to this subject. Second, the social provisions of the EEC treaty have given rise to an interesting evolution in the case law of the …

The Ec Hormone Ban Dispute And The Application Of The Dispute Settlement Provisions Of The Standards Code, Allen Dick Jan 1989

The Ec Hormone Ban Dispute And The Application Of The Dispute Settlement Provisions Of The Standards Code, Allen Dick

Michigan Journal of International Law

As the concept of a unified European market becomes more of a reality as we approach 1992, talk of a "Fortress Europe" has heightened sensitivity on trade issues among officials of the United States and the European Community ("EC"). The EC's plan to ban the sale of meat treated with growth hormones within the Member-States has presented a trade issue disconcerting to both sides. This brewing tempest has raised many interesting legal issues involving the dispute settlement provisions set out in the Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade ("Standards Code"). This note examines why the process failed to resolve, and …

It is concluded that poverty remains a persistent problem in the United States. Reasons for the persistence of poverty are considered and major private and public alternatives to present poverty relief programs are examined.

Notable Vincentians (2): Brother Martin Blanka, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

Martin Blanka was a coadjutor brother, the first brother in the American mission. A man of many virtues, his piety, patience, discretion, and resourcefulness were especially esteemed. He helped establish the seminary at Saint Mary’s of the Barrens; he served as carpenter, stonemason, cook, and tailor. He was responsible for maintaining the good order of the house. His prayers were also much admired as an example for others in the community. Toward the end of his life, he served at the Seminary of Saint Vincent de Paul in Louisiana.
