The Development Of A Youth Consumer Culture In The United States In The 1950s, Phillip D. Mccaskey

History Theses & Dissertations

The 1950s witnessed the development of an important cultural phenomenon in the United States, the result of the demographic increase known as the baby boom. To an unprecedented degree in American history, various facets of the American economy focused towards infants and adolescents due to their swelling numbers and subsequent economic influence. Youths themselves sought to exert their economic power resulting in the formation of a dynamic youth culture manifesting itself most prominently in the entertainment media.

This study examines the origins and scope of the American baby boom. Cultural trends directly related to the baby boom are also analyzed. …

A Final Chapter On Bishop Amat, Francis J. Weber Apr 1992

A Final Chapter On Bishop Amat, Francis J. Weber

Vincentian Studies

Thaddeus Amat was the Vincentian bishop of the diocese of Monterey, California who died in 1878. In 1962, his remains had to be moved. When the casket was opened, his body had not decomposed. Francis J. Weber was assigned to investigate and could not find a natural explanation for the preservation of the remains. He also could not say whether the preservation was due to Amat’s holiness. Amat’s career and funeral are described.

Homelessness Past And Present: The Case Of The United States, 1890-1925, Ellen Bassuk, Deborah Franklin Mar 1992

Homelessness Past And Present: The Case Of The United States, 1890-1925, Ellen Bassuk, Deborah Franklin

New England Journal of Public Policy

An examination of the professional, political, and popular literature on the nature and extent of homelessness from 1890 to 1925 affords a comparison of the economic and social characteristics of the homeless population at the turn of the century with that of today. The discussion covers the ensuing debates over the causes of homelessness, the various subgroups among the homeless during both periods, and the relative rates of homelessness, the context of extreme poverty and dislocation, and the prevalence of individual disabilities. Except for the growing numbers of homeless families over the past decade, the homeless populations during both eras …

From Lemons To Lemonade: An Ethnographic Sketch Of Late Twentieth-Century Panhandling, Louisa R. Stark Mar 1992

From Lemons To Lemonade: An Ethnographic Sketch Of Late Twentieth-Century Panhandling, Louisa R. Stark

New England Journal of Public Policy

A rise in the number of panhandlers on the streets of this country has given rise to the promulgation of ordinances outlawing this activity. Although there has been a great deal of press and litigation revolving around such public policy, little is known about homeless panhandlers. This article reviews the rather limited information about what is known of the sociodemographics of panhandling. Strategies used by panhandlers in pursuing their occupation are described, along with their own perceptions of their occupation. Services available to this population are discussed, along with some suggestions for resolving the problems associated with panhandling on America's …

Homelessness: An Overview, Jim Tull Mar 1992

Homelessness: An Overview, Jim Tull

New England Journal of Public Policy

The homelessness crisis in the United States has reached epidemic proportions as the diversity of the homeless population expands to the point where it resembles the general population. The deepest and most long-standing cause of homelessness is poverty, but there are other forces as well, including the severe shortage of affordable housing (particularly due to urban renewal); deep funding cuts at the federal, state, and local level; the policy of deinstitutionalization; the Vietnam war; and unemployment. A new public policy approach to homelessness is needed, one which addresses these multiple forces and is grounded in the assumptions that housing and …

Foreword, Raymond L. Flynn Mar 1992

Foreword, Raymond L. Flynn

New England Journal of Public Policy

Imagine a hypothetical disaster befalling America's cities. A bomb, perhaps; or a ferocious hurricane; or an earthquake. Two to 3 million Americans lose their homes. We know that, daily, the evening news and the major newspapers would feature stories on the number of people victimized by the disaster. Many Americans would volunteer to help their neighbors in need, and many community agencies and local governments would come to the rescue, but the public would rightly expect the federal government to play a leading role in repairing the human and physical damage. The president and Congress would act swiftly to declare …

The Housing Crisis Enters The 1990s, Peter Dreier, Richard Appelbaum Mar 1992

The Housing Crisis Enters The 1990s, Peter Dreier, Richard Appelbaum

New England Journal of Public Policy

Homelessness in the United States is a symptom of a much deeper economic and housing crisis — a widening gap between incomes and housing prices. With the end of the Cold War, the nation has the resources to solve these problems, but to do so it must mobilize the political will. This article examines the roots of crisis, the public policies and market forces that created it, and policy recommendations to solve the problem. Key to forging a solution is building the political coalition needed to create a broad public consensus.

Crime And Punishment In New Hampshire, 1812-1914 (Volumes I And Ii), Timothy Dodge Jan 1992

Crime And Punishment In New Hampshire, 1812-1914 (Volumes I And Ii), Timothy Dodge

Doctoral Dissertations

Changing definitions of crime accompanied the economic transformation of seacoast New Hampshire from a predominently agricultural, and rural society in 1812 to one that was mainly industrial, commercial, and urban by 1914. This dissertation analyzes a sample of 820 felony incarcerations (19.5%) of the total 4154 incarcerations recorded at the New Hampshire State Prison for the period 1812-1914. Court bills and indictments of Rockingham and Strafford County, New Hampshire are used to analyze felony convictions. Quantitative analysis involving 17 variables reveals that property crime was the most common conviction. Felony conviction rates per 100,000 population nearly doubled between 1812 and …

Banking The Furnace: Restructuring Of The Steel Industry In Eight Countries, Trevor Bain

Upjohn Press

Trevor Bain explores the industry restructurings that occurred in eight major steel-producing countries, including the U.S., Germany and Japan. He begins by categorizing each country as having either an adversarial or a cooperative industrial relations system, and then analyzes the differences in implementation strategies. He also determines who - employers, employees, or government - bore the cost of these adjustments and which industrial relations systems were more efficient in restructuring.

The Effects Of Prenatal Care On Infant Mortality In The United States, Barbara A. Dieterich Jan 1992

The Effects Of Prenatal Care On Infant Mortality In The United States, Barbara A. Dieterich

Theses

This thesis will focus on the causes of infant mortality in the United States. The lack of adequate prenatal care will be specifically addressed.

Research has attributed the majority of preventable infant deaths to socio-economic factors as opposed to the lack of technology. Since the percentage of the United States GNP spent on medical care continues to rise without subsequent decreases in infant deaths, it becomes necessary to focus on causal relationship.

Since a nation's infant mortality rate has long been viewed as an indicator of the country's effectiveness in meeting health needs, many areas must be targeted. The importance …

The Effects Of Railroad Deregulation, Patrick H. Murphy Jan 1992

The Effects Of Railroad Deregulation, Patrick H. Murphy

Theses

This thesis focuses on the hypothetical question: Would American railroads meet their obligation to provide freight service at reasonable cost if no regulation restrictions were imposed?

Railroads were originally regarded as great industrial giants spearheading the development of this country . Wild West movies depicted men driving a golden spike where the railroad from the West met the railroad from the East. This was pictured as a very exciting and romantic time in our history.

However, there were too many abuses. In 1887, the Congress decided to control special rates, the pass system, rebates and discrimination, and passed into law …

Finally, an explanatory historical overview will allow the reader to draw his or her own conclusions as to the preferred view of the legal status of the working woman.

The History Of Wilderness In Nevada And The United States, Jerry Lynn Reynoldson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The following thesis addresses the role that interest groups play in the formation of policy within the government of the United States. Furthermore, it concerns itself with one specific policy issue as a means of accomplishing that goal; wilderness policy. Clearly, it can be established that interest groups are an integral part of the public policy process in democratic models of government. By charting the course of a policy issue, such as wilderness, from its inception through the various stages to final resolution, it is possible to see how a federal policy is influenced by interest groups. As this policy …
