The Journal Of Mother Rose White: The Earliest History Of The Sisters Of Charity Of Saint Joseph's, Emittsburg, Maryland, Betty Ann Mcneil D.C.
Vincentian Studies
Rosetta Landry White was the assistant to Elizabeth Seton and succeeded her as superioress of the Sisters of Charity for two nonconsecutive terms. Her journal, which covers the period from June 1809 until sometime around 1817, is given here. It records the community’s beginning in Baltimore, the hardships of the sisters’ first winter in Emmitsburg, and their adoption of the rules of the Daughters of Charity (with modifications). It also includes the sisters’ first novitiate and vows, and the first missions outside of Maryland, which were orphanages in Philadelphia and New York. Betty Ann McNeil’s introduction to the journal gives …

American Vincentians In 1877–1878: The Maller Visitation Report (1), John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
In 1877, Mariano Maller, the provincial of Spain, was sent on an extraordinary visitation to investigate alleged mismanagement of the American province. The first part of his report to the superior general is presented here. As John Rybolt writes in his introduction, it “contribute[s] to an understanding of American Vincentians in the nineteenth century: who they were, how they lived, the personal and institutional problems they encountered, and . . . what their values and interests were.” Maller calls attention to the necessity of reforming the novitiate, the American provincial’s incompetence, and the province’s debts. Although the confreres are hard …

"A City Of Vivid Contrasts": Antimodernity And Modernity At The Poland Spring Resort, 1860-1900, David Lee Richards
Doctoral Dissertations
This cultural history examines the interplay between antimodernity and modernity that transformed a country inn located in Poland Spring, Maine, into a world-renowned "summer city" during the late nineteenth century. Part exclusive club, colonial homestead, social mecca, therapeutic spa, pastoral farm, natural Eden, recreational playground, and cultured city, the site combined the nostalgia and natural beauty associated with traditional rural society and the affluence and amenities expected of contemporary urban society. The "city of vivid contrasts" created at Poland Spring typified the power of Gilded-Age culture to pave the way for the transition to modernity by appealing to the ameliorative …
American Business Women, 1890-1930: Creating An Identity, Candace A. Kanes
American Business Women, 1890-1930: Creating An Identity, Candace A. Kanes
Doctoral Dissertations
Between 1890 and 1930, many thousands of women in fields ranging from millinery, corset making and dressmaking trades to medicine, social work, and advertising called themselves "business women." Organizations of business women and publications aimed at them helped create an identity for "business women" that served to acknowledge and inspire such women. Business women saw themselves as serious, ambitious, competitive, economically independent, career-oriented, and successful. They focused on gaining recognition for women's achievements, opening new opportunities for women, and instilling high ethical values into business. These self-defined business women, most of whom were single, looked to like-minded women for economic, …

Present To Future : The Innovations Of Leadership Studies, Christopher Hartman Engels
Honors Theses
Formal leadership education is the latest craze at the secondary level of education. Private high schools have for years stated in their brochures that their school produces leaders. However, only recently are these same schools clearly articulating a more formal structure in leadership education. An in-depth case study analysis of three private high schools in Virginia will not only allow for a look at their leadership curricula, but will allow for conclusion to be made about the best possible means of teaching leadership.

Leadership And The Breast Cancer Movement, Amy Silverstein
Leadership And The Breast Cancer Movement, Amy Silverstein
Honors Theses
The breast cancer movement stays away from power struggles and superiority complexes. These women figured out that in order to stay organized and in control, every woman needed to feel included. The nature of the issue of the movement helps as well. Since most of these women fought the disease either themselves or with others, they understand how important a supportive environment contributes to a person's well-being. This support flows into the movement and contributes to the sense of togetherness. Some women are more prone to leadership than others, but that does not mean that they are somehow superior. Their …
