Aliens, Bodies And Conspiracies: Regimes Of Truth In The X-Files, Leanne Mcrae Jan 1999

Aliens, Bodies And Conspiracies: Regimes Of Truth In The X-Files, Leanne Mcrae

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The X-Files is a television program that first screened on Australian television in 1993. This thesis will investigate the role of The X-Files as a cultural text. The X-Files is a significant program, and has contributed to a shift in the way in which television texts represent ideas about society, knowledge and truth. This thesis argues that The X-Files presents ‘knowledge’ in particular ways, and makes it possible to think about the relationship between the body, knowledge, and society in ways which have not previously been so visible.

Resolving Conflicting International Data Privacy Rules In Cyberspace, Joel R. Reidenberg Jan 1999

Resolving Conflicting International Data Privacy Rules In Cyberspace, Joel R. Reidenberg

Faculty Scholarship

While core principles for the fair treatment of personal information are common to democracies, privacy rights vary considerably across national borders. This article explores the divergences in approach and substance of data privacy between Europe and the United States. It argues that the specific privacy rules adopted in a country have a governance function. The article shows that national differences support two distinct political choices for the roles in democratic society assigned to the state, the market and the individual: either liberal, market-based governance or socially-protective, rights-based governance. These structural divergences make international cooperation imperative for effective data protection in …

The Changing Landscape Of America's Societal Sector, Denise Harb Jan 1999

The Changing Landscape Of America's Societal Sector, Denise Harb

Honors Theses

This paper will outline the changes in the nonprofit sector since 1945 and will attempt to show that these changes are the result of various shifts in the contextual environment in which the sector has developed. This review of the history of the nonprofit sector will trace the influence of such factors as World War two and the controversy which surrounded foundations mainly until the 1960s. Other contextual factors include more academic transformations such as the influence of Keynesian economic theory and the 1960's research on the roles of mediating structures in American democracy.

A Comparative Case Study On Why Women Run For Public Office : Hillary Rodham Clinton & Elizabeth Hanford Dole, Ashley Elizabeth Lorenz Jan 1999

A Comparative Case Study On Why Women Run For Public Office : Hillary Rodham Clinton & Elizabeth Hanford Dole, Ashley Elizabeth Lorenz

Honors Theses

As our political history evolves, slowly but surely more and more women are running for public office. What are the things that propel women to run for local, state, or federal leadership positions? Are there certain factors that are contingent upon their embarkment into the political arena? The answers to these questions all contribute to the "creation," if you will, of a political woman. In order to better understand these factors and their effects, I will examine case studies of two women, Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Dole, through the lenses of four such factors including the timing as it relates …

United States Probation/Pretrial Officers' Concerns About Victimization And Officer Safety Training, Kevin D Lowry Jan 1999

United States Probation/Pretrial Officers' Concerns About Victimization And Officer Safety Training, Kevin D Lowry

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In June of 1991, the Monograph 109 supervision manual changed the role of the U.S. Probation/Pretrial Officer from predominately that of a social worker to an enforcement agent. Officers now perform enforcement activities and supervise a more dangerous clientele. This shift in responsibilities did not result in increased safety training. Safety issues have become a major concern for many officers; The current research involved a national survey of U.S. Probation/Pretrial Officers to measure levels of victimization, concerns for personal safety and satisfaction for safety training. The results indicate that few officers were victims of physical assaults but a majority reported …

The Reality Gap Of Employee-Management Misperceptions: Comparing United States Air Force Services Squadron Members To Their Private Sector Counterparts, Michael Christopher Rakoczy Jan 1999

The Reality Gap Of Employee-Management Misperceptions: Comparing United States Air Force Services Squadron Members To Their Private Sector Counterparts, Michael Christopher Rakoczy

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This exploratory study examined employee-management misperceptions in the United States Air Force Services career field. The "reality gap," as defined, is the misperception of workers needs or wants by management. Employee and manager surveys from 1946, 1980, 1987, and 1991 which demonstrate this phenomenon are examined to establish the validity of the reality gap, the length of time it has existed, and the full ramifications of the extent of the gap. The reality gap is then shown as the precipitating factor toward employee dissatisfaction, leading directly to employee turnover. All of this is framed within the context of Management by …

Commercial Speech In The Law Of The European Union: Lessons For The United States?, J. Steven Rich Dec 1998

Commercial Speech In The Law Of The European Union: Lessons For The United States?, J. Steven Rich

Federal Communications Law Journal

Both the United States and the countries that comprise the European Union have previously imposed limits on tobacco advertising. These restrictions prevent tobacco companies from advertising on broadcast television. Recently, the European Union adopted a new proposal that would expand restrictions by phasing out press and billboard advertisements, and prohibiting tobacco company sponsorship of sporting events. It seems certain that advertising interests in Europe will challenge the new proposal as a violation of freedom of expression. An analysis of the European Convention on Human Rights reveals that these challenges should ultimately succeed since the restriction on commercial speech is more …

Democracy Behind Barbed Wire: Examining The Political Culture Of Japanese American Evacuees, Allen Atkinson Nov 1998

Democracy Behind Barbed Wire: Examining The Political Culture Of Japanese American Evacuees, Allen Atkinson

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This paper explores the relationship between culture and political behavior through an investigation of those Japanese Americans who were denied due process and imprisoned during World War Two simply for being of Japanese descent. Military necessity was the reason cited for the government's action, although racism, war hysteria and economic competition also played a major role.

At the time there was a general belief among Caucasian Americans that the Japanese in America had avoided Americanization and could not be trusted to participate in democratic processes. It was suggested that their political and civic culture was an obstacle to the achievement …

Neonaticide: Less Than Murder?, James J. Dvorak

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This comment examines the crime of infanticide. The comment includes a brief history of infanticide and an explanation of how the crime is treated in common law countries. A comparison of the United States and other common law countries leads the author to suggest that the United States should adopt an infanticide statute similar to that of other common law countries.

Russian Supply Efforts In America During The First World War, Dale C. Rielage Oct 1998

Russian Supply Efforts In America During The First World War, Dale C. Rielage

History Theses & Dissertations

The Russian government entered the First World War unprepared for the strains that modern warfare would impose on its industrial resources. As a result, Russia turned to foreign suppliers, most significantly the United States, and made extensive purchases largely financed by British loans. These foreign supply efforts involved both the Tsarist government and representatives of the newly emerging civil elements in Russian society.

Central to the experience of Russian purchasing in the United States was the Russian Supply Commission in America. Established in October 1915 as a coordinating body, the Supply Commission was noteworthy in that it included representatives of …

United States - Indonesian Relations, 1945-1949: Negative Consequences Of Early American Cold War Policy, Robert Earl Patterson Aug 1998

United States - Indonesian Relations, 1945-1949: Negative Consequences Of Early American Cold War Policy, Robert Earl Patterson

Master's Theses

From 1945 to 1949, Indonesian nationalists struggled for independence against their Dutch colonial rulers. For most of the period, American foreign policy favored the Netherlands in its desire to reign once again over the archipelago. American foreign policy strategy advocated a "Europe first" position, and possessed finite resources to contain Soviet expansion in the developing cold war. State Department policy planners sided with European powers as they attempted to resume the status quo ante in Southeast Asia following World War II. Colonies were considered essential to the recoveries of Western European powers economically, politically, and psychologically.

Self Silencing In Children And Adolescents, Gena L. Walz

Psychology

Self silencing is the theorized tendency to abnormally suppress expression of one’s own needs for the sake of a significant relationship Thought to be a predominately female behavior, self silencing has mainly been empirically studied in adults and has been associated with depression in women. To determine the extent, the approximate age of onset and the gender distribution of self silencing behavior in boys and girls, the Silencing the Self Scale (STSS) (Jack & Dill, 1992) was administered to twelfth grade students, and a modified version of this scale for children (STSS-C) was developed, tested and administered to fourth, eighth, …

Confederate Matrons : Women Who Served In Virginia Civil War Hospitals, A. Elise Allison Apr 1998

Confederate Matrons : Women Who Served In Virginia Civil War Hospitals, A. Elise Allison

Honors Theses

In September 1862, the Confederate Congress authorized hospitals to employ white women as chief matrons, assistant matrons, and ward matrons. This paper examines the lives and experiences of matrons who worked in Confederate hospitals in Virginia. It concludes that only ''exceptional" women with the stamina to endure physical and mental hardships were able to defy conventional ideas about their proper role and contribute to the care of Confederate sick and wounded as matrons.
