Pay At Risk: Compensation And Employment Risk In The United States And Canada, John A. Turner Editor

Upjohn Press

The contributors to this book investigate the compensation and employment risks for U.S. and Canadian workers. They examine both wage and nonwage aspects of compensation, and whether workers in the U.S. or Canada face more job-related risks. They also seek to identify trends in risk bearing and whether they differ by country.

In The Face Of Adversity: The Response Of The Vincentian And Charity Families To 9/11, Regina Bechtle S.C.

Vincentian Studies

The response of the Vincentian and Charity Families to the attacks of 9/11 is chronicled, using people’s own words wherever possible. On the day itself and during the aftermath, Sisters of Charity and Vincentians prayed with and counseled grieving people, first responders, and rescue workers. Personnel from Saint Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center were among the earliest to arrive at Ground Zero, and the Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers treated over one thousand victims. Among other things, Sisters of Charity served as New York Police Department chaplains, answered calls to hospital information lines, and worked at a DNA collection site …

Euthanasia And Assisted Suicide In The Post-Rodriguez Era: Lessons From Foreign Jurisdictions, Michael Cormack

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Euthanasia and assisted suicide are highly controversial subjects that have drawn much attention in Canada over the last two decades. This paper outlines how the Netherlands, the United States, Australia, and Canada have approached the practices. Jurisprudence, public opinion polls, legislative developments, and the positions of medical organizations and their members are included in the analysis. A number of arguments for and against the continued prohibition of the practices in Canada are evaluated. As well, information regarding the extent to which euthanasia and assisted suicide are performed in these countries is assessed. It will be shown that Canadians currently enjoy …

Poor Canadian Legal Education: So Near To Wall Street, So Far From God, Harry W. Arthurs Jul 2000

Poor Canadian Legal Education: So Near To Wall Street, So Far From God, Harry W. Arthurs

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The recent appearance of recruiters from Wall Street firms at several Canadian law schools, and the recent hiring by American law schools of several mid-career Canadian law professors, has created a "moral panic" as journalists, academics and law firms have expressed great concern over the loss of Canada's "best and brightest" to the United States. Properly understood as part of a larger debate about globalization and regional economic integration, these developments are less important in themselves than for what they reveal about the present and future of the Canadian state, and the Canadian business community, legal profession and universities.

Pre-Employment Character Assessments For United States Pretrial Services And Probation Officers, Michael Blake Baker Jan 2000

Pre-Employment Character Assessments For United States Pretrial Services And Probation Officers, Michael Blake Baker

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Are pre-employment character assessments for federal officers necessary? Can character be tested? What does Aristotle's theory of moral perception and practical wisdom have to do with law enforcement? I will look at what constitutes human flourishing or eudaimonia and how it relates to law enforcement. Moral perception and judgment are discussed and how perception is necessary in the Federal Pretrial Services and Probation Officer's profession. What makes one person's character good and another's less than good? Are there tests currently being used to test for strength of character or are they really testing for ethical sensitivity or moral judgment?

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

To study transmission patterns of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) in persons with AIDS, we evaluated P. carinii isolates from patients in five U.S. cities for variation at two independent genetic loci, the mitochondrial large subunit rRNA and dihydropteroate synthase. Fourteen unique multilocus genotypes were observed in 191 isolates that were examined at both loci. Mixed infections, accounting for 17.8% of cases, were associated with primary PCP. Genotype frequency distribution patterns varied by patients' place of diagnosis but not by place of birth. Genetic variation at the two loci suggests three probable characteristics of transmission: that most cases of PCP do …

Exploring Other Worlds: Margaret Fox, Elisha Kane, And The Antebellum Culture Of Curiosity, David Alexander Chapin Jan 2000

Exploring Other Worlds: Margaret Fox, Elisha Kane, And The Antebellum Culture Of Curiosity, David Alexander Chapin

Doctoral Dissertations

Antebellum Americans had a strong interest in the unknown, which manifested itself simultaneously in highbrow, middlebrow, and lowbrow culture. Venues such as scientific institutions, lyceums, lecture halls, the "penny-press," and the dime-museum all catered to American curiosity. Exploring Other Worlds examines this "culture of curiosity," arguing that curiosity was a defining trait of antebellum America, transcending many of the boundaries we often associate with the era. Curiosity promoted intellectual interest in science, but it also led to the sensationalism of modern commercial popular culture.

The inter-related lives of Elisha Kane and Margaret Fox demonstrate this thesis. Kane was America's first …

The Us School Breakfast Program: Short- And Long-Term Academic Effects, Chris Rohlfs Jan 2000

The Us School Breakfast Program: Short- And Long-Term Academic Effects, Chris Rohlfs

Honors Papers

This paper evaluates short- and long-term academic effects of the US School Breakfast Program (SBP). The paper divides into four sections: an introduction (page 4), a literature review (page 11), a statistical model (page 31), and an empirical model (page 38). In the first section, we cover general facts and details about the SBP. In the second section, we first review literature relevant to the SBP (supply, demand, and short-term effects studies). Next, we explore studies of the long-term effects of schooling and of school quality. Many of the techniques and information from these studies relate to our discussion of …

Planning For High Net-Worth U.S. Persons Through The Use Of Offshore Life Insurance, J. Richard Duke

Richmond Journal of Global Law & Business

Sophisticated planning for the high net-worth United States citizens often includes the use of offshore variable life insurance. Such leading edge planning is accomplished through structures that provide income, gift, estate, and generation-skipping transfer tax planning not available domestically. In addition to providing sophisticated tax and estate planning benefits, variable life insurance policies issued by foreign-based carriers have numerous economic advantages.

Employee Benefits And Labor Markets In Canada And The United States, William T. Alpert Editor, Stephen A. Woodbury Editor Jan 2000

Employee Benefits And Labor Markets In Canada And The United States, William T. Alpert Editor, Stephen A. Woodbury Editor

Upjohn Press

Alpert and Woodbury present a comprehensive set of explorations into the impacts that the provision of various types of employee benefits (or lack thereof) have on labor markets. And while there are, as the editors point out, substantial differences between the employee benefits systems of Canada and the U.S., these differences showcase the impacts of specific policies related to employee benefits on labor markets.
