The Storm Morphology Of Deadly Flooding Events In The United States, Sharon T. Ashley, Walker S. Ashley Jan 2008

The Storm Morphology Of Deadly Flooding Events In The United States, Sharon T. Ashley, Walker S. Ashley

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

This study investigates the synoptic and mesoscale environments associated with deadly flooding events in the United States from 1996 to 2005. A manual environment classification scheme, which includes analyses of surface charts, 500 hPa maps, and composite radar data (where available), is utilized to ascertain the primary ascent mechanisms and storm types producing these fatal flood events. Of the ten classifications in the scheme, the two most dominant ascent mechanisms associated with deadly floods include frontal boundaries (45%) and tropical systems (22%). Findings illustrate that mesoscale convective systems were responsible for 36% of the total number of flood fatalities over …

Yucca : Yikes! The Wrong Solution, Wrong Place, Wrong Time, Justin Carey Jan 2008

Yucca : Yikes! The Wrong Solution, Wrong Place, Wrong Time, Justin Carey

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This paper examines Yucca Mountain as the nation's first planned permanent repository for nuclear waste. In addition to analyzing the site itself, I also examine the possible ramifications that opening this mountain site may have on the nuclear power revival movement and renewable 'green' forms of energy. These issues were explored using historical, descriptive, comparative and qualitative methods. As a consequence of applying these methodologies I determined the Yucca site to be geologically unstable; transportation issues associated with nuclear waste are more problematic than first envisioned; the choice of this particular mountain site involves enviornmental racism of the worst kind; …

Food Insecurity And Maternal Depression In Rural, Low-Income Families: A Longitudinal Investigation, Catherine Huddleston-Casas, Richard Charnigo, Leigh Ann Simmons

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between household food insecurity and maternal depression in a rural sample to determine whether food insecurity predicted mothers’ depression over time or vice versa.

Design: The study employed a prospective design using three waves of data from ‘Rural Families Speak’, a multi-state study of low-income rural families in the USA. Food insecurity was measured using the Core Food Security Module and depression was measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies–Depression Scale. A structural equation model was fit to the data using the AMOS software package.

Setting: Sixteen states …

Forced Labor In The United States: A Contemporary Problem In Need Of A Contemporary Solution, Chrissey Buckley Jan 2008

Forced Labor In The United States: A Contemporary Problem In Need Of A Contemporary Solution, Chrissey Buckley

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Legal slavery ended in the United States in 1865, yet the practice of forcing individuals to work against their will, oftentimes in inhumane conditions, continues today. Currently there are around 50,000 people working in forced labor situations in the United States (Bales 47). Although this number is smaller than it was during the 18th century, finding and freeing these individuals is difficult because they are hidden away and exploited. The United States is now at a critical juncture in its struggle to end forced labor. In 2000, the U.S. Government enacted legislation that holds perpetrators of forced labor accountable, and …

Adapting Information Operations To A Changing World: Future Options For The United States Government, Edwin L. Armistead Jan 2008

Adapting Information Operations To A Changing World: Future Options For The United States Government, Edwin L. Armistead

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

In 1998, the Department of Defense in the United States released the first of a series of seminal policies on Information Operations (IO). Entitled Joint Publication 3-13, this instruction laid out for the first time, in an unclassified format, how the American military forces could utilise this particular element of power. As a relative newly defined activity, this publication proposed to revolutionise the manner in which warfare, diplomacy, business and a number of other areas are conducted. However, this radical transformation in the United States government with regard to IQ has not occurred over the last decade and a significant …
