"This Wilderness World": The Evolution Of A New England Farm Town, 1820--1840, Mary Babson Fuhrer

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation uses the extraordinary conflict that roiled one rural town in central Massachusetts during the second quarter of the nineteenth century as a lens through which to observe communal relationships in transition. Using the Amish as a model, the dissertation identifies traditional communal social organization as agrarian, patriarchal, communal, homogeneous, localistic, and consensual -- as well as closed, conformist, and suspicious of difference and innovation. The dissertation argues that conflict arose in Boylston during the 1820s and '30s as these traditional relationships gradually gave way to more modern ways of belonging, associating, and envisioning one's place in the wider …

Temporal Trend Analysis Of Long-Term Monitoring Data At Karst Springs, 2009, Chris Herrington, Scott E. Hiers Jan 2010

Temporal Trend Analysis Of Long-Term Monitoring Data At Karst Springs, 2009, Chris Herrington, Scott E. Hiers

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

Water quality is degrading over time at Main Barton Springs, Austin, Texas, as determined by multiple linear regression analyses (COA 2005). Similar techniques are applied to long-term monitoring data from 5 other Barton-related springs: Upper Barton Springs, Old Mill Springs, Eliza Springs, Backdoor Springs and Cold Springs. Categorical variables representing low-flow condition, laboratory method, filter fraction and analytical method were also used in the regression analysis. Varying temporal trends were observed at study springs. Due to variations in contributing watersheds, local influences, and aquifer mixing, observed temporal trends at other Barton complex springs did not always match observed trends at …

Universal Service In The United States: A Focus On Mobile Communications, Steven G. Parsons, James Bixby Jan 2010

Universal Service In The United States: A Focus On Mobile Communications, Steven G. Parsons, James Bixby

Federal Communications Law Journal

The concept of universal service, providing affordable telecommunications to all citizens, has a long and changing history in the United States. Prior to the Telecommunications Act of 1996, efforts to achieve universal service were largely based on a complex web of implicit subsidies to basic landline local exchange residential service. The Act expanded and codified the concept of universal service and made the subsidies largely explicit. This Article evaluates the possible economic rationales for subsidizing voice communications and find them lacking. This Article argues that the weak rationale for subsidizing basic voice communications makes it critical that U.S. universal-service policy …
