Private Or Public Insurance? The Institutional History Of Health Care In The United States And The United Kingdom, Karin M. Abel
Private Or Public Insurance? The Institutional History Of Health Care In The United States And The United Kingdom, Karin M. Abel
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The primary question at issue in this paper is the following: given the similarities between the two countries with regard to welfare state institutions, why have the United States and the United Kingdom diverged on the issue of health care? Drawing on sociological institutionalism, a branch of the new institutionalist paradigm, this paper provides an answer to this question: during the formative years of the health care stories in the two countries, variations in institutional and cultural conditions produced contrasting policy outcomes. More specifically, this paper discusses how the combination of institutions (political, labor, and medical) and culture led to …

Breaking The Ice: Prospects For Canadian-American Institutional Change In The Governance Of The Northwest Passage, Jeffrey Parkey
Breaking The Ice: Prospects For Canadian-American Institutional Change In The Governance Of The Northwest Passage, Jeffrey Parkey
All Dissertations
This study assesses four institutional approaches to governing the use of the Northwest Passage, including the current rules in use. The assessment is conducted through the use of expert interviews, a review of the theoretical literature, and an examination of comparative cases. Because of significant environmental changes underway in the Arctic region, institutional change for Northwest Passage management is receiving increased attention. Due to the potential environmental and security impacts of regularized ship transits through the Northwest Passage, a number of informed observers have discussed the need for considering alternative means of governing the waterway. The advantages and disadvantages of …

A Survey Of State Renewable Portfolio Standards: Square Pegs For Round Climate Change-Holes?, Ivan Gold, Nidhi Thakar
A Survey Of State Renewable Portfolio Standards: Square Pegs For Round Climate Change-Holes?, Ivan Gold, Nidhi Thakar
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
Thirty states now have renewable portfolios standards that require generators of electricity to increase their use of renewable energy. Originally intended to promote “energy independence” and other environmental goals, today the programs are among the few U.S. programs which respond to the threat of global warming. This article considers how they work and whether they are effective. It concludes that, in the absence of comprehensive international or federal greenhouse gas controls, renewable portfolio standards are an effective and productive means to retard global warming.

Optimality, Efficiency, And Equity: A Comparative Analysis Of Australia’S Healthcare System, Christos Makridis
Undergraduate Economic Review
With entitlement spending dramatically increasing, poised for further increases, healthcare has been placed at the forefront of economic domestic policy. In surveying the international landscape, few countries have successfully sustained an efficient and equitable healthcare industry. In this sense, nexus question in the health care debate becomes balancing the desire for cost-effectiveness & efficiency with equity. As such, this article will describe the historical and economic developments that contributed to the development of the American medical system. The article will also examine the success of Australia’s two tiered health care system and provide policy recommendations based on the findings.

Contains statistics about sorghum growing in the United States and world wide, with a focus on Nebraska.
Grain sorghum is an important crop worldwide, but has become a minor crop in Nebraska
Largely replaced by maize and soybean as major commodity crops
Small investment in research in both private and public sectors
Yield has increased more slowly for grain sorghum than for other crops
Modern maize hybrids and soybean varieties have increased stress tolerance, thus reducing this advantage of grain sorghum
