All Rise: Factors Affecting Decision Making Of United States Supreme Court Justices, Benjamin L. Barker Apr 2020

All Rise: Factors Affecting Decision Making Of United States Supreme Court Justices, Benjamin L. Barker

Tenor of Our Times

Despite the widespread perception that judges are not political beings and should rule in an impartial manner, it seems that discourse surrounding the Supreme Court is more partisan than ever, and that the Justices themselves are ruling in a partisan manner. What factors make Supreme Court Justices rule in a partisan manner? In order to find out, I examine the ideological direction of each Justice’s vote in each Supreme Court case from 1946 to 2019 in light of factors concerning the individual Justice such as their political party affiliation and the party of the President who appointed them. I find …

Associations Between Breast Cancer Subtype And Neighborhood Socioeconomic And Racial Composition Among Black And White Women, Erin Linnenbringer, Arline T Geronimus, Kia L Davis, John Bound, Libby Ellis, Scarlett L Gomez Apr 2020

Associations Between Breast Cancer Subtype And Neighborhood Socioeconomic And Racial Composition Among Black And White Women, Erin Linnenbringer, Arline T Geronimus, Kia L Davis, John Bound, Libby Ellis, Scarlett L Gomez

2020-Current year OA Pubs

PURPOSE: Studies of Black-White differences in breast cancer subtype often emphasize potential ancestry-associated genetic or lifestyle risk factors without fully considering how the social or economic implications of race in the U.S. may influence risk. We assess whether neighborhood racial composition and/or socioeconomic status are associated with odds of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) diagnosis relative to the less-aggressive hormone receptor-positive/HER2-negative subtype (HR+ /HER-), and whether the observed relationships vary across women's race and age groups.

METHODS: We use multilevel generalized estimating equation models to evaluate odds of TNBC vs. HR+ /HER2- subtypes in a population-based cohort of 7291 Black and …

Social Scientists’ Testimony Before Congress In The United States Between 1946-2016, Trends From A New Dataset, Thomas V. Maher, Charles Seguin, Yongjun Zhang, Andrew P. Davis

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Congressional hearings are a venue in which social scientists present their views and analyses before lawmakers in the United States, however quantitative data on their representation has been lacking. We present new, publicly available, data on the rates at which anthropologists, economists, political scientists, psychologists, and sociologists appeared before United States congressional hearings from 1946 through 2016. We show that social scientists were present at some 10,347 hearings and testified 15,506 times. Economists testify before the US Congress far more often than other social scientists, and constitute a larger proportion of the social scientists testifying in industry and government positions. …

Restructuring Chrysler Through Bankruptcy, Alexander Nye Mar 2020

Restructuring Chrysler Through Bankruptcy, Alexander Nye

Documents

In late 2008, due to the confluence of the financial crisis and years of structural decline, Chrysler was nearing bankruptcy (Klier and Rubenstein 2012, 35-37). Treasury provided Chrysler's owner, Chrysler Holding, with a $4 billion bridge loan and Chrysler's related finance company, Chrysler Financial, with a $1.5 billion financing program under the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) (U.S. Treasury Department Office of Financial Stability 2018) (Canis et al. 2009, 9) (Nye 2019 Bridge Loans) (Treasury 2009). The government-led restructuring through bankruptcy involved the commitment of roughly $5 billion in debtor-in-possession loans from the U.S. Treasury and the Canadian government, under …

U.S. Support For Chrysler Financial, Alexander Nye

Documents

In 2008, due to the confluence of the financial crisis and years of structural decline, Chrysler was nearing bankruptcy. Chrysler's related finance company, Chrysler Financial, was in dire straits. On January 2, the U.S. Treasury extended Chrysler a $4 billion bridge loan to give the company time to prepare a viable restructuring plan (See Nye 2019 Bridge Loans). Two weeks later, the Treasury arranged $1.5 billion in low-interest financing for Chrysler Financial to fund the securitization of new consumer car loans. Chrysler Financial drew down the entire $1.5 billion between January 16 and April 9, 2009. Although the loans bore …

The Plight Of Women In Positions Of Corporate Leadership In The United States, The European Union, And Japan: Differing Laws And Cultures, Similar Issues, Bettina C. K. Binder, Terry Morehead Dworkin, Niculina Nae, Cindy A. Schipani, Irina Averianova

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

Gender diversity in corporate governance is a highly debated issue worldwide. National campaigns such as “2020 Women on Boards” in the United States and “Women on the Board Pledge for Europe” are examples of just two initiatives aimed at increasing female representation in the corporate boardroom. Several

European countries have adopted board quotas as a means toward achieving gender diversity. Japan has passed an Act on Promotion of Women’s Participation and Advancement in the Workplace to lay a foundation for establishing targets for promoting women.

This Article examines the status of women in positions of leadership in the United States, …

BACKGROUND: Cancer screening is a complex process encompassing risk assessment, the initial screening examination, diagnostic evaluation, and treatment of cancer precursors or early cancers. Metrics that enable comparisons across different screening targets are needed. We present population-based screening metrics for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers for nine sites participating in the Population-based Research Optimizing Screening through Personalized Regimens consortium.

METHODS: We describe how selected metrics map to a trans-organ conceptual model of the screening process. For each cancer type, we calculated calendar year 2013 metrics for the screen-eligible target population (breast: ages 40-74 years; cervical: ages 21-64 years; colorectal: ages …

We have encountered pancreatic tumors with unique histologic features, which do not conform to any of the known tumors of the pancreas or other anatomical sites. We aimed to define their clinicopathologic features and whether they are characterized by recurrent molecular signatures. Eight cases were identified; studied histologically and by immunohistochemistry. Selected cases were also subjected to whole-exome sequencing (WES; n = 4), RNA-sequencing (n = 6), Archer FusionPlex assay (n = 5), methylation profiling using the Illumina MethylationEPIC (850k) array platform (n = 6), and TERT promoter sequencing (n = 5). Six neoplasms occurred in females. The mean age …
