Establishment Of Chinese Medicine Practice In San Antonio, Texas, Chloe Kristina Sonnier

Sociology and Anthropology Honors Theses

This thesis sets out to interrogate the establishment of traditional Chinese medicine practice in San Antonio, Texas. I have chosen to focus on two practitioners in particular who can be considered founders of Chinese medicine practice in San Antonio and in Texas as a whole. These practitioners, Dr. Chang and Dr. Ho, are the only remaining of an estimated five total practitioners that practiced in San Antonio in the 1970’s and 1980’s before acupuncture became a licensed profession in Texas. This thesis will follow the history of these two practitioners, detailing their separate roles in the establishment of Chinese medicine …

To evaluate progress toward prevention of enteric illnesses, the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) of CDC's Emerging Infections Program monitors the incidence of laboratory-diagnosed infections caused by eight pathogens transmitted commonly through food at 10 U.S. sites.* This report summarizes preliminary 2019 data and describes changes in incidence compared with that during 2016-2018. The incidence of enteric infections caused by these eight pathogens reported by FoodNet sites in 2019 continued to increase or remained unchanged, indicating progress in controlling major foodborne pathogens in the United States has stalled. Campylobacter and Salmonella caused the largest proportion of illnesses; trends in …

Exercise As A Mitigator Of Poor Mental Health Among Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Adults, Jennifer R. Pharr, Jason D. Flatt, Lung-Chang Chien, Axenya Kachen, Babayemi O. Olakunde

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Introduction: There is a positive association between exercise and improved mental health in the general population. Although there is a greater burden of psychological distress among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people, little is known about the association between exercise and mental health in this population. The authors explored the association between exercise and poor mental health reported by LGB adults in the United States. Methods: Our analyses used data from the 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey. Multiple regression analyses were used to determine the association between exercising and mental health days adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics. Results: Data …

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education Faculty Publications

Despite conditions that would work against a small and rural school in an impoverish rural area of the United States, Fairway Elementary School has managed to excel in its accountability measures. Through interviews with faculty, staff, teachers, students, and parents of children at Fairway Elementary School a model was developed through the lens of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. It was found that a new administrator at the school started with the physiological needs of the children and are now working within the esteem stage of Maslow’s Hierarchy. Details from each stage of the hierarchy are provided as a promising practice …

Total Plasma Volume Determinations For Patients With Potentially Challenging Conditions Requiring Therapeutic Plasma Exchange: Dealer's Choice, Lizabeth Rosenbaum, Mindi Johnson, Marissa Li, Jay S. Raval

Pathology Research and Scholarship

LETTER TO THE EDITORTotal plasma volume determinations for patients withpotentially challenging conditions requiring therapeuticplasma exchange: Dealer's choiceTo the Editor:Determination of total blood volume (TBV) and totalplasma volume (TPV) are essential steps in the process ofinitiating therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE).1Regardlessof the specific disease for which a procedure is to be per-formed, apheresis instruments typically require height, weight, sex, and hematocrit data to calculate TPV. For rou-tine patients, these calculations are generally straightfor-ward to perform and are accurate. However, certainconditions raise the concern of possibly inaccurate TPVdeterminations. These potentially challenging conditionsinclude obesity, pregnancy, and limb amputation. Despitenumerous modifications available to typical TBV and …

BACKGROUND: In 2015, there were approximately 40,000 new HIV diagnoses in the United States. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective strategy that reduces the risk of HIV acquisition; however, uptake among those who can benefit from it has lagged. In this study, we 1) compared the characteristics of patients who were prescribed PrEP with individuals newly diagnosed with HIV infection, 2) identified the specialties of practitioners prescribing PrEP, 3) identified metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) within the US where there is relatively low uptake of PrEP, and 4) reported median amounts paid by patients and third-party payors for PrEP.

Screen Time Effects On Children And Adolescents In Both The United States And Australia, Marrisa Cox

Honors Projects

Technology and screen time have become an essential part of everyday life in many countries across the world. Children in Australia and the United States are exposed to increasing hours of technology exceeding recommendations by pediatricians in both countries. Pediatricians suggest limiting screen time due to the research indicating possible impact on social development, and unhealthy emotional and physical outcomes in children. The objective of this paper was to review the mental and physical impacts of screen time on young and adolescent children and to compare and contrast policies regulating screen time in the United States and Australia. The information …

Working Our Way Out Of Privilege: Lessons From South Africa On Preparing White Americans For A National Transitional Justice Process, Susan R. Wysor Nguema

Social Work (Undergraduate) Faculty Publications

This study utilized difference-in-differences analysis to determine likelihood of confidence in four major public institutions over three periods of time in South Africa and the United States, two prior to South Africa’s transitional justice process and one after. Results indicate that Black South African confidence rose while White South African confidence dropped drastically. American confidence levels, for both races, remained relatively consistent over all three time periods. The drastic drop in White South African likelihood of confidence points to possible feelings of loss related to power and privilege. These results provide insight for social workers interested in addressing racial injustice …
