Acquisition Of The Mitsui Collection By The East Asiatic Library, University Of California, Berkeley, Roger Sherman Feb 1982

Acquisition Of The Mitsui Collection By The East Asiatic Library, University Of California, Berkeley, Roger Sherman

Journal of East Asian Libraries

Not long after World War II came to a close, there was a burgeoning of interest in area studies, which prompted many academic libraries in the United States to embark on extensive acquisitions programs to obtain foreign books for their universities. At the Berkeley campus of the University of California, it was recognized that there was a need on the West Coast for a strong collection of East Asian research materials. This led to the establishment of the East Asiatic Library (EAL) in 1947 as a separate branch on campus. The first few years at the Library were a period …

The Layered Society: Material Life In Portsmouth, Nh, 1680 To 1740 (New Hampshire), Karen Elizabeth Andresen

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation evaluates the material life and economic culture of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, from 1680 to 1740 through an analysis of the probate inventories of the estates of 234 males. It also details the methodology used to determine the twin biases of probate records--that people whose estates were probated were generally older and wealthier than people in the overall population.

The inequality of wealth was fairly static. Using model life tables, a commodity price series derived from Portsmouth goods, and weights to account for differences between the ages and economic status' of the probated and total populations, the Gini Index …

Simulations For Teaching Concepts On Washington State, Cynthia Louise Buettgenbach

All Graduate Projects

Simulation lessons and materials were developed to teach concepts on Washington State to a classroom of fourth grade students. The activities in which the students participated were the following:

1) planned trips to the five geographic regions of Washington State;

2) became part of an Indian tribe and held a meeting with other tribes at Sacajawea Park;

3) played a board game, traveling with Lewis and Clark to the Pacific Ocean;

4) held mock state elections and one legislative session.

Students showed an increased interest in social studies through the simulations.

A Study Of Selected Antipoverty Interventions Among The United States Poor, Carol A. Garvin Jan 1981

A Study Of Selected Antipoverty Interventions Among The United States Poor, Carol A. Garvin

Theses

This thesis has several components. Its review of antipoverty literature leads-in to a theoretical perspective of the causes, effects, and remediation of poverty in the United States. A small minority of powerful individuals and corporations who monopolize decision- making apparatuses consistently make decisions which nurture unjust, inequitable allocations of the nation's resources. As they protect their vested interests, the socio- economic and political systems which perpetuate the gross economic imbalance between rich and poor are nurtured . The poor (and increasingly , the middle class) are left virtually powerless, even over the decisions which affect their own lives.

In order …

The Political Economy Of Drug Trafficking: The Herrera Organization (Mexico And The United States), Peter A. Lupsha, Kip Schlegel Nov 1980

The Political Economy Of Drug Trafficking: The Herrera Organization (Mexico And The United States), Peter A. Lupsha, Kip Schlegel

Research Papers

In this paper we examine the effects of this drug trafficking contrabandista activity, the rise and decline of Mexico's leadership as an exporter of illicit drugs, and some of the effects of organized trafficking on the political economy of both Mexico and the United States. Smuggling and contraband are endemic to borderlands. As one knowledgeable observer estimated, "anywhere from 20 percent to 30 percent of all economic activity along our Southwestern border is illegal contraband.,2 Of this contraband trade only a small percentage involves the smuggling of illegal drugs. Most of it involves the illegal rebalancing of border-created supply-and demand …

Markets And Merchants: Economic Diversification In Colonial Virginia, 1700-1775, Peter Victor Bergstrom Jan 1980

Markets And Merchants: Economic Diversification In Colonial Virginia, 1700-1775, Peter Victor Bergstrom

Doctoral Dissertations

While the literature detailing the intricacies of the colonial tobacco trade is extensive, and often quite persuasive, its conclusion that Virginia's economy began and ended in the production of tobacco is misleading. Virginia's expansion into previously unsettled lands, and the tremendous increase in the size of its labor force during the first three quarters of the eighteenth century did produce a gigantic growth in the tobacco trade, but it had other effects as well. Grain and meat products along with naval stores and iron contributed little to the colony's economic output in 1701, yet by 1774 they accounted for better …

Brokers Of The Word: An Essay In The Social History Of The Early American Press, 1639-1783, Charles Wheeler Wetherell Jan 1980

Brokers Of The Word: An Essay In The Social History Of The Early American Press, 1639-1783, Charles Wheeler Wetherell

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores the social context of printing and publishing from 1639 to 1783 through an analysis of the complete extant record of colonial printing and a collective biography of the printers, publishers and booksellers who comprised the press. Two general areas are explored. The first involves the size, stability, and growth of the press, the second, the structure of the trade at large.

The early American press grew like the population it served and was characterized by a marked stability. The broad patterns of production and growth suggest that how much was printed depended largely upon the number of …

France, The United States And The Spanish-American War, Richard Henry Owens Jul 1977

France, The United States And The Spanish-American War, Richard Henry Owens

History Theses & Dissertations

The present study is an examination of the effect of the Spanish-American War on the formal relations of France and the United States. Because France was the neighbor and friend of Spain and also at least an erstwhile friend of the United States, the war presented certain difficulties for the French government. At home colonialists and royalists sympathetic to Spain demanded overt support of the Spanish cause. The Spanish government looked to France first to lead a diplomatic coalition against the United States and then to mediate the dispute. The United States, meanwhile, urged Paris to follow a policy of …

A Study Of Household Determinants Of Migration, Paul A. Tatsch Jan 1977

A Study Of Household Determinants Of Migration, Paul A. Tatsch

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Throughout history, human population has been characterized by significant geographical redistribution in response to climatic changes, varying economic exigencies and other impelling factors such as slavery. While significant intercontinental movements have for the most part been culminated, the process of internal migration is a factor which continues to influence economic growth, development and change of most economic systems. It represents a dynamic adjustment process of individuals and populations to economic and social alternatives and within each system it also serves as an important means of human resource allocation and reallocation among competing geographical alternatives.

Studies of migration flows and characteristics …

Reapportionment : An Oregon History And A Critique Of Baker Vs Carr, Ann Frissell Lackey Jul 1976

Reapportionment : An Oregon History And A Critique Of Baker Vs Carr, Ann Frissell Lackey

Dissertations and Theses

This study explores the ways in which federal and state authorities have sought to deal with a difficult problem of political power in the context of the U.S. Constitution. Oregon reapportionment history offers an appropriate introduction to a critique of the national reapportionment decisions of Baker vs Carr and Reynolds vs Sims. Its Constitution stipulated population and the ratio derived from a population based formula were the means by which apportionment was to be determined and noncompliance had been particularly evident from 1933 to 1952. Also, by the initiative process and a decision by the Oregon Supreme Court, Oregon had …

The Railroad Passenger Problem: American And British Experiences As Bases For A New Model, Vincent J. Tolve Jan 1973

The Railroad Passenger Problem: American And British Experiences As Bases For A New Model, Vincent J. Tolve

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This article examines the character of the rail passenger problem, identifies the American and British governments' responses and proposes a hybrid model of a rail passenger service organization based on several intrinsic characteristics of these existing systems. The article implies that the profit standard inadequately measures the success of a public utility, and suggests the adoption of an eclectic standard that measures enterprise success in terms of economic viability, response to public need, and quality of service rendered. The proposed model involves the rediscovery, application, and combination of two organizational concepts: the public corporation and the interstate compact.

The Response Of The United States To Fascism In Latin America 1933-1943, Robert C. Rasmussen Jan 1970

The Response Of The United States To Fascism In Latin America 1933-1943, Robert C. Rasmussen

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The conflict between the totalitarian forces of fascism and the democracies was not confined to just the battlefields of Western Europe or the beaches of the South Pacific. Between 1933 and 1943 the forces of these two conflicting ideologies were engaged in a struggle to win the confidence of the people of Latin America. The success that the United States ultimately had in winning the trust and support of the Latin America nations bolstered the morale of America while at the same time denying the Nazis an important strategic and propaganda triumph.

In this study the activities of the Nazis …

Comparative Conflict Resolution Procedures In Taxation: An Analytic Comparative Study, L. Hart Wright, Jean Van Houtte, Pierre Kerlan, Helmut Debatin, James Arthur Johnstone, H. Schuttevaer, Elizabeth G. Brown Jan 1968

Comparative Conflict Resolution Procedures In Taxation: An Analytic Comparative Study, L. Hart Wright, Jean Van Houtte, Pierre Kerlan, Helmut Debatin, James Arthur Johnstone, H. Schuttevaer, Elizabeth G. Brown

Michigan Legal Studies Series

Tax administrators in well developed countries rarely have either occasion or opportunity to compare experiences or exchange opinions regarding procedures and practices utilized in administering complicated tax laws. Moreover, there is little comparative literature on the subject. Even the tax institutes which are internationally oriented usually focus on substantive tax principles, not procedures and practices. Hopefully, therefore, administrators in highly developed countries will find useful this analytic comparison of practices and procedures through which six of their number resolve disputable income tax questions -administratively and judicially.

Concern for tax administrators in well developed countries, however, was not the prime motivation …
