The Employment Patterns Of Criminal Justice Graduates Of The University Of Alabama In Birmingham: A Follow-Up Study., Watcharapol Prasarnrajkit
All ETDs from UAB
The discipline of Criminal Justice began in the early twentieth century with the initiation of the Berkeley Police School in 1908 by August Vollmer. This school was the first formal effort to train policemen in the United States. Many of the instructors were drawn from the University of California at Berkeley. 1 Vollmer believed that "the professional policeman would be distinguished from his predecessors by the level of his formal training both before and after recruitment and that new ideas from the universities could provide valuable insights into the causes of crime and the means for preventing it."

Most Danish immigrants to the United States of America headed for the northern tier of the Middle Western states. The majority stayed there. The autobiographical pieces that follow present the accounts of three Danish immigrants to the Middle West. Each one is personal and subjective. Each of the writers came from different provinces in Denmark, and from different environments within those provinces. Readers will note that the three accounts represent three eras - the 1890's, the 1920's and late 1940's. Curious readers will perhaps explore whether the differences in chronological time of the uprooting, as well as the different backgrounds, …

Japanese Attitudes Towards Commerical Agreements With The People's Republic Of China, Lewis Marks, Masaru Ono
Japanese Attitudes Towards Commerical Agreements With The People's Republic Of China, Lewis Marks, Masaru Ono
Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce
This article intends to demonstrate the similarity of Japanese and Chinese attitudes towards contractual agreements by contrasting Japan-.P.R.C. agreements with Japan-United States and Japan-third world agreements. This similarity of attitudes, the structural support framework for bilateral trade, technology, and after-sales service can explain Japan's success in trading with the P.R.C.

Approaches To Bilateral Loan Agreements Between Developed And Developing States: Some Lessons From The Practice Of Denmark, The United Kingdom And The United States, A. O. Adede
Dalhousie Law Journal
An earlier study,' relying upon texts of bilateral loan agreements concluded between Denmark and certain developing countries, 2 and between the United Kingdom and certain developing countries, 3 discloses that there is a need for further examination of the subject for the purposes of updating and assessing the trend of developments in this area of international law. This paper is accordingly designed to offer comparative analysis of the more recent approaches to bilateral loan agreements concluded by Denmark, the United Kingdom and the United States with a number of developing countries. The selection of these three developed, market economy States …

P.S. Vig And The Americanization Issue During World War I, Peter L. Petersen
P.S. Vig And The Americanization Issue During World War I, Peter L. Petersen
The Bridge
World War I and the Americanization campaigns which accompanied it had a pr0found impact upon ethnic relations in the United States. Although German-Americans bore the brunt of rapidly emerging anti-foreign sentiments, no ethnic group was totally free of suspicion and public condemnation. In Iowa, Governor William Lloyd Harding defended his proclamation forbidding the public use of foreign languages by attacking the Danish element in the Hawkeye State's population. According to the Governor, who was speaking before a large crowd at Sac City on July 4, 1918, young Danes in Iowa were not getting a proper American upbringing. Pointing to the …
The United States Military Pension System : Toward A Rational Reform With Commentary On The Report Of The President's Commission On Military Compensation, L. Shelton Clarke
The United States Military Pension System : Toward A Rational Reform With Commentary On The Report Of The President's Commission On Military Compensation, L. Shelton Clarke
Master's Theses
In August of 1974, I wrote U. S. Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr., the senior Virginia senator and T. Edward Braswell, Chief Counsel for the Senate Armed Services Committee for a good deal of material concerning the United States military pension system.
The system had intrigued me as a pension planner for many years for several reasons. First, the plan itself possessed grave design defects, which if allowed to exist in private plans would lead the employer corporation excessive cost and possibly fiscal insolvency. Second, with the quadrupling of the price of oil in 1974 and the creation of a …

The British Diplomatic Response To The Central American Policies Of The Franklin Pierce Administration, 1853-1856, William Mark Hillsman
The British Diplomatic Response To The Central American Policies Of The Franklin Pierce Administration, 1853-1856, William Mark Hillsman
History Theses & Dissertations
This thesis is an examination of the British Foreign Office's response to the Central American policies of the Franklin Pierce administration. When the Pierce administration came to power in 1853 the United States government abandoned the idea, contained in the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty of 1850, of an Anglo-American partnership in Central America and instead launched a diplomatic offensive designed to force Britain completely out of the area. The major source for this study is the Clarendon Manuscripts which contain the personal correspondence of Foreign Secretary Clarendon and his minister in Washington, John F. Crampton, as well as numerous intergovernmental memoranda and …

Further Investigation Into The Role Of Education In The Demand For Health Care, Mohammad Al-Hadi Al-Bakir Al-Barazi
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation intends to examine the inconsistency prevailing in the health economics literature between theoretical predictions and empirical findings concerning the role of education in the determination of health care services. Starting from the premise that the household’s stock of health capital is a nondurable commodity which depreciates over time; that it can be augmented by investment; that the household production function for gross investment in health capital stock is homogeneous of degree one in both inputs of health care services and health care time; that a ‘factor-neutral’ education enters the production function of the household as an environmental variable …
