A Life Of Andrew Ferrari, C.M., Joseph Rosati C.M. Apr 1986

A Life Of Andrew Ferrari, C.M., Joseph Rosati C.M.

Vincentian Studies

This life of the highly esteemed Andrew Ferrari, one of the first Vincentians in the United States, describes his personal qualities and virtues. From 1816 until his death in 1822, he worked near Bardstown and in Vincennes, St. Louis, and New Orleans; his ministry had impressive variety despite the fact that he was often ill. He died of yellow fever after tirelessly administering sacraments to persons who were sick. The article gives insight into the Vincentians’ first activities in America, which were often undertaken in the face of considerable hardship.

The Catholic Motor Missions In Missouri, Patrick Mckenna C.M. Apr 1986

The Catholic Motor Missions In Missouri, Patrick Mckenna C.M.

Vincentian Studies

The Catholic Motor Missions operated from 1935 to 1965 to combat anti-Catholic prejudice. Traveling throughout Missouri by car with a portable pulpit and a public address system, Vincentians gave informal talks on the most controversial or misunderstood aspects of Catholicism. They also had a box through which people could submit anonymous questions about the faith. Since the missioners were addressing fundamentalist Protestants, the talks were grounded in references to the King James Bible. The missioners never took collections or attempted conversions. The missions later became a way to reach Catholics as well. They were very successful and inspired similar efforts …

Growth And Debt: Mexico And The United States In The Medium Term, Sven W. Arndt, Donald R. Lessard, Clark W. Reynolds Jan 1986

Growth And Debt: Mexico And The United States In The Medium Term, Sven W. Arndt, Donald R. Lessard, Clark W. Reynolds

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Mexico and the United States are at an historic crossroad. Earthquake, oil prices, and domestic inflation have dramatically worsened Mexico's economic situation in the past year, more than offsetting the beneficial effects of lower international interest rates. Trade, financial, and employment relations between the two countries are threatened at the very time when their economic and social interdependence is growing. While temporary relief has been gained from recent agreements with the IMF, World Bank, and other international institutions, condition on commercial bank acceptance, even if all the terms are met much remains to be done.

Race And Class In American Race Relations Theory, 1894-1939, Vernon Williams Jr. Jan 1986

Race And Class In American Race Relations Theory, 1894-1939, Vernon Williams Jr.

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

The purpose of this essay is to identify the origins of the debate between Wilson and Pinkney. The period covered focuses on the years 1894 to 1939 - from the publication of Franz Boas's "Human Faculty as Determined by Race" in the Proceedings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1894, to the publications of Robert E. Park's "The Nature of Race Relations" in 1939. It is my argument that the parameters of the discussion regarding the progressiveness of race relations in the United States were defined during these years, and that all current theories are but …

Extra-Legal Factors In The American Legal System, Peter W. Mayer Jan 1986

Extra-Legal Factors In The American Legal System, Peter W. Mayer

Honors Papers

The laws of the United States have been written over time with the intention of providing a framework for fair, legitimate, and uniform legal decisions to be made. Laws attempt to provide national tranquility by providing channels of punishment for those who disobey them. At the same time laws in the United States attempt to avoid any conflict with differing cultural values present in our nation. The laws of the United States are intended to function without regard to the race, sex, or religion of the defendant, complainant, or attorneys involved. Laws themselves cannot help but embody the cultural values …

Legal And Political Considerations Of The United States' Ratification Of The Genocide Convention, Jay Rosenthal Mar 1985

Legal And Political Considerations Of The United States' Ratification Of The Genocide Convention, Jay Rosenthal

Antioch Law Journal

On December 11, 1948, the United States officially signed the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (hereinafter the Convention).1 The Convention was sent to the Senate as part of the ratification process for the advice and consent of two-thirds of the Senators present and voting. 2 But the Senate declined to give advice and consent to the Convention, and has maintained that position for over thirty-six years. Ninety-six countries have now deposited their instruments of ratification with the United Nations, making them parties to the Convention. The United States is not a party. …

The Teaching Of International Human Rights In U.S. Law Schools, Richard B. Lillich Mar 1985

The Teaching Of International Human Rights In U.S. Law Schools, Richard B. Lillich

Antioch Law Journal

The teaching of international human rights law in U.S. law schools has come a long way in the past two decades. Twenty years ago a survey conducted by the American Society of International Law made no mention of the subject. I In 1965, the late Egon Schwelb, "Mr. Human Rights," in what he himself characterized as a "novel departure,"2 offered a seminar on "The International Protection of Human Rights" at Yale. During the next half-dozen years, similar offerings were made available at California (Berkeley), Harvard, Virginia, and several other institutions. By 1971, when a panel at the annual meeting of …
