Using Ultra Wide Band Sensor For Robot Localization, Binoy George
Using Ultra Wide Band Sensor For Robot Localization, Binoy George
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
While GPS stands as the most popular localization tool in our present world, its feasibility in technologies like self-driving cars comes into question due to its unreliability in certain environments and weather conditions. In this research, Ultra Wide Band (UWB) is explored as an alternative localization technology. Using a 4-Anchors 1-Tag UWB system, a localization algorithm in three-dimensional space will be developed and implemented on a moving robot. For this experiment, the Decawave’s DWM1000 UWB transceivers and the Turtlebot2i will be used. The position of the robot calculated by this algorithm will be observed, first when the robot is kept …

The Vertically Enabled Cargo Transfer Robot (VECTR) was designed to carry heavy loads along staircases, a potentially hazardous task for humans. The main VECTR project focused on the mechanics of the robot, with little investigation into autonomy. This extended project explored computer vision as a means of making future versions of VECTR more autonomous. The vision module focused on identifying the presence of humans, since this ability is especially valuable for safe navigation. The module was created using Python and OpenCV. The program used the Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) algorithm, with the You Only Look Once (YOLO) algorithm being …
The Effect Of Standardization On Sustainability Reporting Completeness Over Time And Across Industries As Well As Its Implementation, Anisse Boumaraf
The Effect Of Standardization On Sustainability Reporting Completeness Over Time And Across Industries As Well As Its Implementation, Anisse Boumaraf
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
This project’s goal is to determine if the government should mandate sustainability reporting (SR) and if so, what that would look like. SR is important since it helps companies “understand and better manage [their] impacts on people and the planet. It can identify and reduce risks, seize new opportunities, and take action towards becoming a responsible, trusted organization in a more sustainable world” (Global Reporting Initiative, 2021c). To accomplish this to the best of our abilities we as a world should be seeking to improve the systems we use. A stratified random sample of SR reports is collected across multiple …

Potspot: Sky Detection And Result Visualization, Ashwitha Kassetty
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Many beginner planters face difficulties in choosing suitable plants for their home environment. Our mobile application ‘PotSpot’ is designed to make this process easier. The application calculates the amount of sunlight based on the picture of the user's desired planting area at home. Once the user uploads a picture of the possible planting location and its surroundings, the device's orientation sensors help determine its geographic location. These stored pictures are then overlaid with the sun's path and converted to black and white images. Our algorithm analyses these pictures and calculates the amount of sunlight present in the area. These results …

Parametric Sizing Of A Rbcc Ssto Space Tourism Vehicle, Henry Barahona
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
As of Spring 2021, Virgin Galactic is attempting to become the first company to provide commercial space tourism by starting its two-stage-to-sub-orbit (TSTSO) flight program as early as the first quarter of 2022. But why stop here? This work presents the analysis of the next challenge: a single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) space tourism vehicle. Specifically, this work presents the parametric sizing (PS) analysis of a SSTO space tourism vehicle with a rocket-based combined-cycle (RBCC) engine and horizontal takeoff horizontal landing (HTHL) capabilities. This analysis was performed through the synthesis framework of hypersonic convergence. With hypersonic convergence, the wing planform area is iterated …
Identification And Characterization Of A Mutation That Enhances The Mitochondrial Upr Resulting From Loss Of Methionine Synthase In C. Elegans, Heba Zakaria
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Mitochondria have vital cellular functions, notably, the generation of energy dysfunctional mitochondria can activate the mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt), a conserved transcriptional response that regulates the expression of several mitoprotective genes. Research has shown that UPRmt activation promotes lifespan extension and increases resistance to infection. We recently discovered that loss of methionine synthase gene metr-1 activates the UPRmt. We performed a forward genetics screen to isolate modulators of the UPRmt caused by the metr-1 mutant. This was performed to determine how the loss of methionine synthase impacts the UPRmt and longevity. Interestingly, one mutant was isolated from this screen …
Securing Influence: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Congressional Tenure And Voting Behavior, Carrington Matthews
Securing Influence: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Congressional Tenure And Voting Behavior, Carrington Matthews
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Congressional members are influenced by several competing factors when they cast their vote on a bill, including party influence, their desire to win re-election, and the concerns of their constituents. The literature provides reason to believe that newer members of Congress would be more likely to vote in support of a bill sponsored by a member of their own political party so as to secure influence in their political party and Congress. This project conducted a cross-sectional secondary data analysis of the voting behavior of Congress members during five congressional sessions over a 20-year period to determine if senior members …

Parametric Sizing Analysis Of A Rocket Single Stage To Orbit Vehicle, Josue Vazquez
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Space tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of the aerospace industry. Both orbital and sub-orbital platforms are being considered to market to the public. The goal of this project is to perform a Parametric Sizing (PS) analysis for a Two-Stage-to-Sub-Orbit (TSTSO) and Single-Stage-to-Orbit (SSTO) rocket powered system. PS is the starting point from where an idea, the planned mission, and a blank slate are shaped by designers into a solution space and final design point for the vehicle. The Hypersonic Convergence (HC) method was chosen because of its integrated approach to sizing the vehicle by solving a weight …
Biological Phosphorus Removal: Existing Research And Design Process For A Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion, Scott Landers
Biological Phosphorus Removal: Existing Research And Design Process For A Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion, Scott Landers
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
High levels of phosphorus in effluent wastewater can lead to eutrophication, the excessive growth of algae, which can choke out other aquatic life from receiving waters if the wastewater is not treated for phosphorus removal. Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) is a process through which phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs) take up and store phosphorus which is contained in influent. The PAOs are wasted from the system through a waste activated sludge system, removing phosphorus from the wastewater. For the design of an expansion to the Pflugerville Central WWTP, an A2O process was specified, where three basins in sequence provide biological …

2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Insulin deficiency and insulin resistance are common etiologic traits of chronic hyperglycemia associated with the diagnosis of type II diabetes which results in an increased risk for the subsequent development of age-related compositional bodily changes. Of these progressive bodily changes, sarcopenia, an age-associated disease marked by a gradual reduction in skeletal muscle mass and functionality, has been noted to be positively correlated with high degrees of insulin resistance observed in type II diabetic older adults (≥65 yrs.). In addition to variables such as general inactivity and arthritic pain, the downregulation of GLUT-4 receptors on skeletal myocytes caused by chronic hyperglycemia …

Static Simulation Of Surgical Drill End-Effector When Gripped By Foam, Colton Bass
Static Simulation Of Surgical Drill End-Effector When Gripped By Foam, Colton Bass
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Often, companies invest significant research into determining the fatigue life of new products. Medtronic has requested an end-effector design for gripping a newly developed surgical drill during fatigue testing. Further, the end-effector must mimic grip stiffness of human hands. This work simulated the deflection experienced by the surgical drill while being gripped by the end-effector. To simulate the deflection, the Modulus of Elasticity of the foam was determined using a cantilevered beam experiment. Then, using this value and the density of the foam, a new material was created within the finite element analysis (FEA) software to correctly simulate the deflection. …

Active Load Stabilization On Stair Climbing Vehicle Vectr Senior Design Team 2021, Joseph Johnson
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The VECTR Stair Climbing Robot team has designed a product to take loads up a stairway in a safe manner. This device carries the load in a basket. The basket’s rotation is impeded by a set of parallel rotational dampers. This setup is sufficient to retard the oscillation of the load about its point of equilibrium, but is passive and slow to respond. As such, a system was designed to actively control the load orientation. This system will use a sensor to measure change in angle and adjust the load to keep it stable. This system provided a tangible decrease …

Currently, healthcare providers face significant challenges within the field of wound treatment. In the last decade, United Kingdom reported £2.3-3.1 billion expenditure on chronic wound treatments, whereas the United States spent over $25 billion on wound management. This indicates that unresolved wounds can place a significant burden on public health resources. A comprehensive review of global chronic wound pervasiveness found that the pooled prevalence of chronic wounds to be approximately 2.21 per 1000 individuals. Prevalence across the globe highlights the urgent need for more effective treatment strategies. One niche within the realm of wound treatment involves complementary and alternative medicines …
Extended Kalman Filter Implementation On A Load-Carrying, Stair-Climbing Robot, Heather Pavlik
Extended Kalman Filter Implementation On A Load-Carrying, Stair-Climbing Robot, Heather Pavlik
2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
For a load-carrying, stair-climbing robot, it is critical that the robot moves accurately for the safety and well-being of the users and observers nearby. Most systems in the world are nonlinear, including the dynamics of the robot, so having the ability to represent nonlinear systems with linear approximations is an important part of engineering. An extended Kalman filter can perform linear approximations, so it will be used to linearize the robot’s position in space, as sensed by sonar sensors that are on the robot. The extended Kalman filter will be designed to filter out noise on a set of test …

Who Participates In The Skilled Technical Workforce After College And What Are Their Educational Pathways?, Xianglei Chen
Journal of Research in Technical Careers
The skilled technical workforce (STW) comprises workers in occupations that require significant science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) skills but not a bachelor’s degree for entry. The United States had over 17 million STW workers in 2017, and is expected to be short about 3.4 million workers who are qualified for the available STW positions by 2022. Despite the important contribution of the STW to the U.S. economy, the policy discourse on the STEM workforce has largely focused on workers with bachelor’s or graduate degrees, overlooking those without a 4-year degree. Consequently, knowledge about the STW is limited. This paper …

Addressing common student questions in introductory STEM courses early in the term is one way that instructors can ensure that their students have all been presented with information about how to succeed in their courses. However, categorizing student questions and identifying evidence-based resources to address student questions takes time, and instructors may not be able to easily collect and respond to student questions at the beginning of every course. To help faculty effectively anticipate and respond to student questions, we 1) administered surveys in multiple STEM courses to identify common student questions, 2) conducted a qualitative analysis to determine categories …
