Student Perceptions Of Authoring A Publication Stemming From A Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (Cure), Ashley N. Turner, Anil K. Challa, Katelyn M. Cooper Sep 2021

Student Perceptions Of Authoring A Publication Stemming From A Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (Cure), Ashley N. Turner, Anil K. Challa, Katelyn M. Cooper

Research, Publications & Creative Work

Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) engage students in authentic research experiences in a course format and can sometimes result in the publication of that research. However, little is known about student-author perceptions of CURE publications. In this study, we examined how students perceive they benefit from authoring a CURE publication and what they believe is required for authorship of a manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal. All 16 students who were enrolled in a molecular genetics CURE during their first year of college participated in semistructured interviews during their fourth year. At the time of the interviews, students had been authors …

Comparing Effectiveness And Perceived Characteristics Of Active Learning Methods In Undergraduate Biology Education, Linda R. Pesciotta Jul 2021

Comparing Effectiveness And Perceived Characteristics Of Active Learning Methods In Undergraduate Biology Education, Linda R. Pesciotta

Dissertations - ALL

Although many undergraduates begin college as STEM majors, attrition rates from the field are high and numerous reports suggest that evidence-based teaching methods are critical for retention. Despite educators' research and near consensus that active learning is more effective than lecture, there are many types of active learning and the literature indicates their effects are not equivalent. The purpose of the current study was to directly compare different kinds of active learning by assessing their correlation with student performance (including learning gains) and understanding students' perceptions of them (including whether they contained Merrill's five principles of instruction and/or met three …

Codeo - Learning Support Research: Use Of Automated Feedback Within Undergraduate Programming Education, A Case Study, Andrew Davis Bellas Jul 2021

Codeo - Learning Support Research: Use Of Automated Feedback Within Undergraduate Programming Education, A Case Study, Andrew Davis Bellas

The Plymouth Student Scientist

This paper describes the research process of a case study in the domain of pedagogical computer science, specifically in the context of how first year undergraduate students learn programming skills, with the purpose of investigating novel mechanisms to aide in engaging undergraduate students when learning to code, as well as add to an existing body of knowledge on computing pedagogy. The methodology employed in this endeavour was a threefold approach; stage one of the studies engaged undergraduate students in a series of data gathering exercises, such as a survey and a semi-structured interview. This allowed for the development of a …

Attitude, Anxiety, And Technostress As A Correlate Of The Use Of Mobile Phones By Undergraduate Students In A Delta State University (Delsu), Abraka, Marcus L. Isebe May 2021

Attitude, Anxiety, And Technostress As A Correlate Of The Use Of Mobile Phones By Undergraduate Students In A Delta State University (Delsu), Abraka, Marcus L. Isebe

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study assessed attitude, anxiety, and technostress as a correlate of the use of mobile phones by undergraduate students in Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka. The total population for this study was 6,675 undergraduate students registered with the library of Delta State University in the 2019/2020 academic session. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire which was designed in print formats. A total number of 1001 copies of the questionnaire were distributed to the respondents with the aid of 5 research assistant and a total of 797 questionnaires was duly completed and found usable for the study. …

Para La Comunidad: Centralizing Latinx Scholars At An Emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution, Valerie Mora May 2021

Para La Comunidad: Centralizing Latinx Scholars At An Emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution, Valerie Mora

M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects

This study highlights Latinx student experiences, through storytelling, to identify existing services and resources aiding Latinx academic success at the University of San Diego (USD), while also exploring what additional resources are needed to aid Latinx scholars’ belonging and mattering at a Catholic, predominantly White institution (PWI). Latinx student enrollment rates at colleges and universities have increased nationwide, leading institutions to consider the Hispanic -serving Institution (HSI) federal designation to gain access to discretionary grant opportunities. For HSI designation, institutions must have at least 25% of their student population categorized as Hispanic, and 50% of Hispanic students must be Pell …

Creation Of Classification Model For Use In An Automated Document Classification System Using Machine Learning, Sandesh Koirala May 2021

Creation Of Classification Model For Use In An Automated Document Classification System Using Machine Learning, Sandesh Koirala

2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Commercial document processing is very expensive and prone to human errors. Despite the presence of various machine learning algorithms for object classification, their performance and feasibility can vary widely based on their implementation and use case. This paper encompasses the performance evaluation of various classification algorithms for use in an automated electronic document classification system. The subject algorithms were used to classify about 1000 vectorized documents in an iterative environment. Various performance measures such as precision, recall, and F-measure were used to evaluate these algorithms. It was found that most algorithms obtained more than 95% accuracy. However, Logistic Regression was …

Microwave-Induced Photodynamic Therapy Using Cu-Cy Nanoparticles For Cancer Treatment, Abdul Wahab May 2021

Microwave-Induced Photodynamic Therapy Using Cu-Cy Nanoparticles For Cancer Treatment, Abdul Wahab

2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been viewed as a promising cancer treatment, but it has been limited due to poor tissue penetration by the light that can potentially be solved by photosensitizers activated by microwaves that can penetrate further to reach deeper tissue. Copper-cysteamine (Cu-Cy) is a novel photosensitizer that can be excited using microwave (MW), ultra-violet (UV) light, and X-rays to generate highly reactive oxygen species (ROS) for the destruction of cancer cells. This review is meant to present the process of photodynamic therapy and a method for synthesizing Cu-Cy nanoparticles with current information concerning microwave-induced photodynamic therapy (MIPDT), including …

Gitraffe: Improving The Git Scm Experience Through Revamped Interactions And Intent Classification, Adarsh Pai May 2021

Gitraffe: Improving The Git Scm Experience Through Revamped Interactions And Intent Classification, Adarsh Pai

2021 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Git is an open-source distributed source control system designed to facilitate programming collaboration efficiently, enabling decentralized teams and developers to contribute to software engineering projects of varying scale. Despite its effectiveness and wide-scale adoption among both the professional and open-source community, its features are often underutilized, stemming from its steep learning curve, convoluted interface, and a general lack of clear documentation at times. In short, Git suffers from an inconvenient user experience (UX) problem. Although the idea of a Git GUI client is not inherently novel, Gitraffe separates itself by packaging a feature set comparable to industry incumbents, with features …
