Creating Tools To Investigate The Predictive Power Of Polygenic Score For The Big 5 Personality Traits And Math Ability, Roman Goff
2023 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Studies have shown that personality and mathematical ability are heritable traits. In the past, the genetic component of this heritability was investigated using twin studies where genetically identical twins are reared apart and the siblings’ traits are compared. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have obviated the necessity of such methods by combining genetic data with modern computing power. The exponential decrease in cost of human genome sequencing and increase in accessibility has made it trivial to use an individual’s alleles to correlate their genome to their phenotypic traits. In this study, the results of a GWAS for the Big Five personality …

Spelunking Through A Forest Of Roots: Solutions Of Polynomials In Different Number Systems, Nathan Easley
Spelunking Through A Forest Of Roots: Solutions Of Polynomials In Different Number Systems, Nathan Easley
2023 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Most advanced college students are familiar with the fact that an equation p(x) = 0, where p(x) is a polynomial of degree n with real coefficients, will have at most n solutions. When the coefficients are complex, the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra (FTA) says that there are exactly n solutions, counting multiplicity. For example, x^3 - x = 0 has exactly three solutions, 0, 1, and -1. This thesis investigates how many solutions polynomial equations have in other number systems, particularly in hyperbolic and parabolic numbers. Our methods involve looking for how many solutions simple equations, such as x^2 - …

This study looks at whether or not there is a correlation between the voting patterns of a county and the presence of prisons within that county. There is a history of prisons being used to inflate population numbers within states to change where voting power lies. Previous research exists indicating a speculative relationship between Republican politicians and increased prison gerrymandering, so this research was developed to reveal if there is a genuine relationship between these two factors. Some of the variables included to better isolate the influence of prison location are per county income, biographical information, total population, voter turnout, …

Suburban Application Of Image Processing For License Plate Detection, Ryan James Bluestein
2023 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
It is not uncommon to see vehicles speeding in residential neighborhoods, particularly near high traffic areas such as highways or city centers. This issue is typically either dealt with by stationing police officers along streets, or by ignoring the issue completely. By capturing images of license plates and processing them to extract the plate numbers, offenders can easily and inexpensively be monitored and reported. One method of processing these images is to run them through a convolutional neural network. These networks excel at detecting objects within images. By creating a convolutional neural network, and training it based on sample data, …

A Way To Assess The Impairment Of Cerebral Autoregulation In Pediatric Patients Under Ecmo With Neuroimaging Abnormalities, Sylvine N. Ineza
2023 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Cerebral autoregulation protects the healthy brain by maintaining an adequate cerebral blood flow in case of blood pressure changes. Cannulation of great blood vessels and alterations of pulsatile flow patterns during ECMO (Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) alters cerebral autoregulation. This project provides a reliable methodology that can assess the degree of cerebral autoregulation impairment of ECMO patients and examine if it can be correlated or predictive of neuroimaging abnormalities. Initially, we used the normal WTC MATLAB code to obtain a time-frequency map. Then we calculated the in-phase percent significance and used the resultant values to determine the Scale Averaged Percent Significance …
