Examining Stem Undergraduate Persistence And The Differential Relationships Across Sex, Race, And Ethnicity Through Two-Factor Theory, Leo D. Pedraza May 2019

Examining Stem Undergraduate Persistence And The Differential Relationships Across Sex, Race, And Ethnicity Through Two-Factor Theory, Leo D. Pedraza

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This study investigated the persistence of undergraduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors through two-factor theory. Proxies for STEM persistence factors were used as hygiene and motivator factors, which were categories of two-factor theory originally conceptualized to understand workplace determinants that extrinsically and intrinsically motivate employees. A two-block entry model was used to test multinomial regression analysis with outcomes for persisting in STEM, degree incompletion, and changing to a non-STEM major. This study also examined differential relationships of motivator factors across sex, race, and ethnicity due to underrepresentation in STEM fields. Data for this study were extracted …

Simulation As Replacement For Traditional Clinical In Pre-Licensure Nursing Education: Outcomes Of Different Ratios Of Replacement Time For Traditional Clinical With Simulation, Tiffany Zyniewicz May 2019

Simulation As Replacement For Traditional Clinical In Pre-Licensure Nursing Education: Outcomes Of Different Ratios Of Replacement Time For Traditional Clinical With Simulation, Tiffany Zyniewicz

Dissertations

The use of simulation in nursing education has grown over the last 30 years. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing National Simulation Study indicated that up to 50% of traditional clinical hours can be replaced with simulation at a 1:1 replacement ratio and produce the same outcomes. A review of the literature indicated that there is no standard replacement ratio for simulation time to traditional clinical time being used in pre-licensure nursing education in the United States. The purpose of this study was to explore the outcomes of utilizing a 1:1 simulation-to-traditional clinical time replacement ratio and a …

Intelligent Problem Solver For Discrete Structures, Mohammed Ali May 2019

Intelligent Problem Solver For Discrete Structures, Mohammed Ali

2019 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Online calculators have been on rise in the past few years. An online calculator for discrete mathematics is almost impossible to find. There are few online calculators that take up this challenge, but they have very limited functionality. This problem is mainly because discrete math problems have their own set of rules that apply only to that problem. We wrote a modified forward chaining algorithm on Wolfram Programming Lab that can solve discrete mathematics problems. We also created a beautiful front-end using React and Materials-UI framework. An application program interface (API) will be used to connect the backend with the …

Efficient Control And Monitoring Of A Mobile And Compact Energy Storage Module, Alexander Johnston May 2019

Efficient Control And Monitoring Of A Mobile And Compact Energy Storage Module, Alexander Johnston

2019 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Consumer electronics are more widely penetrating society every day and there is always a strong demand to keep them powered. The constant user demands make it critical that energy storage always be available and that its users always know how much energy they have left in their battery. Lithium-ion batteries are the most widely deployed type of energy storage today due to their high combined power and energy density. While they bring with them incredible convenience, they also bring challenges with respect to regulating their power and ensuring they are operated safely. Power electronic buck and boost converters, respectively, are …

Integrated In-Wheel Electric Vehicle Powertrain Design, Joseph Herring May 2019

Integrated In-Wheel Electric Vehicle Powertrain Design, Joseph Herring

2019 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Over 50% of the carbon monoxide, and 25% of the harmful hydrocarbons released into the air in 2013 were attributed to transportation. It is clear that the automobile industry is entering a new paradigm as resources are increasingly spent towards developing electric vehicles as a sustainable transportation source. NextGen Drive is a team of senior Mechanical Engineering students working with Dr. Yawen Wang in the Mechanical Engineering Department at The University of Texas at Arlington to research and develop the design of an integrated in-wheel electric motor powertrain solution for an electric vehicle that offers increased energy efficiency, delivers superior …

A Flexible Distribution In Modeling Survival Data, Ian Harris May 2019

A Flexible Distribution In Modeling Survival Data, Ian Harris

2019 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

When analyzing survival data, which involves such parameters as lifetime, censoring rate, and any number of covariates, we have several distributions to try to fit the study into a model. Among these are the exponential, the gamma, the lognormal, and the Weibull distributions. The problem with these distributions is that their parameter requirements are quite stiff and not flexible. So, if some parameters are even slightly off (or otherwise unknown), how would we be able to model the data and, better yet, see if the data falls outside the given distributions? That is where the generalized gamma distribution comes in. …

Evaluation Of Flow Rate-Diameter Relationships For Small-Diameter Vascular Grafts, Using A Computer-Modulated Biomechanical Testing System, Fariha Murshid May 2019

Evaluation Of Flow Rate-Diameter Relationships For Small-Diameter Vascular Grafts, Using A Computer-Modulated Biomechanical Testing System, Fariha Murshid

2019 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

The need to prevent autotransplantation in patients with cardiovascular diseases has led to the increase in interest in the use of artificial vascular grafts (e.g. tissue engineered or synthetic grafts) as potential replacements for diseased blood vessels. Testing for the flow rate-diameter relationships of artificial small-diameter vascular grafts, using the biomechanical testing system, can help to determine their suitability of being potential replacements based on their biomechanical characteristics. Phosphate buffered saline (PBS) is pumped through each sample over a range of flow rates (gradually increasing from 1 mL/s), with the intention of mimicking extreme cases of increased blood flow through …

Calibration Of Cantilever Beam Load Cells For Detecting Pressure And Shear In Prosthetic Socket Applications, Elida Sorto-Ramos May 2019

Calibration Of Cantilever Beam Load Cells For Detecting Pressure And Shear In Prosthetic Socket Applications, Elida Sorto-Ramos

2019 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

In this paper the pressure and shear forces are quantified at the interface of a prosthetic socket and the residual limb. This is useful in determining the amount of adjustment needed during the prosthetic fitting procedure. The correct fit of the prosthesis is essential for complete and timely rehabilitation of the patient and return to normal ambulation after amputation. A cantilever beam load cell was developed to measure strain and inversely determine the pressure that caused it. The measurement system was verified with theoretical calculations and computational analysis. The results produced a cantilever beam load cell that can calibrate an …

A Pedagogical Framework For The Design And Utilization Of Place-Based Experiential Learning Curriculum On A Campus Farm, Julia L. Angstmann, Amber J. Rollings, Grant A. Fore, Brandon H. Sorge

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Campus agriculture projects are increasingly being recognized as spaces impactful to student engagement and learning through curricular and co-curricular programming; however, most campus farm activities are limited to agriculture or sustainability programs and/or co-curricular student clubs. Thus, campus farms are largely underutilized in the undergraduate curriculum, marking a need to explore the efficacy and impact of engaging a diverse array of disciplinary courses in the rich social, environmental, and civic context of local sustainable agriculture. The Farm Hub program presented here incentivizes instructors to refocus a portion of existing course content around the topic of local, sustainable agriculture, and reduces …
