Pollution is a serious issue faced by the modern world. An analysis of the last five decades reveals that even though considerable attention has been focused on managing larger institutional sources of pollution, individual and crowd-oriented sources of pollution in the form of littering continue to be a pervasive problem worldwide. The 2020 Institute of Industrial and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) region 5 robotics competition was created with the purpose of utilizing robotics to help combat this particular issue of littering. With the goal to represent The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) at the competition, our senior design team developed …

On The Topic Of Sudden Storm Commencements Related To The Earth’S Geomagnetic Field With An Emphasis On The Precursor Signature, Atharva Dange
2020 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Much of space physics deals with the relationship between the sun and the earth. The type of interaction—solar winds, flares, particles, mass ejections, radiations, plasma, and magnetic fields—determine the phenomenon observed on earth. Sudden Storm Commencements (SSCs) are unique high impulse disturbances in the Earth’s magnetosphere characterized by an anomalous rise in the Dst index. Both hourly and minute time resolutions would be utilized to compare deviations in value ranging from 10nT to 50nT. The goal will be to study SSCs by analyzing satellite data and constructing simulations in order to be able to predict future such storms on Earth. …
Detection Of Exomoons By Decametric Radio Emissions And Determination Of Their Habitability Through Tidal Heating, Sanskruti Sharma
Detection Of Exomoons By Decametric Radio Emissions And Determination Of Their Habitability Through Tidal Heating, Sanskruti Sharma
2020 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Over 4000 exoplanets have been discovered but most of them are unsuitable for life. With organic compounds being discovered on Saturn’s moon Enceladus, exomoons have become hotspots for extra-terrestrial life. The strong tidal force of Jupiter have various effects on its moons. Large heat dissipation in Io creates an ionic atmosphere, which interacts with Jupiter electromagnetically. As a result, Io emits characteristic radio emissions. Subsurface ocean is also created in Europa due to heat dissipation in its interior. Tidal dissipation is calculated for different cases for Galilean moons. Habitable zones for Io and Europa are determined by varying the semi-major …
Eccentric Rotating Mass Motor Vibrational Plate Modeling, Lukas Willingham
Eccentric Rotating Mass Motor Vibrational Plate Modeling, Lukas Willingham
2020 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
To design and analyze a vibrational plate design, multiple steps must be followed to find the time response of the system. The design was created using an existing patent for the design objectives and the technology that must be avoided. The design was then created using a Delrin plastic sheet, a set of springs, 4 linearization bearings and a vibrational motor. From this point a Free-Body Diagram was set up to find the governing equations of the system. Using these equations, the time response was found using two different numerical methods: the ODE45 program within MATLAB and Laplace/Inverse Laplace. Using …

Geoscience Education Research: Trends And Applications In Undergraduate Courses, Diane Lally
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Water resources are progressively under pressure from anthropogenic uses. Students need to learn about water systems as they are the future decision-makers and problem solvers who will be faced with unknown challenges in the future. The overarching goals of this dissertation were: 1) to identify ways in which geoscience instructors are incorporating systems thinking and science modeling in their teaching along with the accompanying methods for improving systems thinking and modeling implementation and 2) explore how the implementation of science modeling and systems thinking increase student evaluation of models and the understanding of hydrologic content. Data for these studies came …
Student Conceptualization Of Stoichiometry, Khushikumari J. Patel-Desai
Student Conceptualization Of Stoichiometry, Khushikumari J. Patel-Desai
All Dissertations
General Chemistry (I and II) is a year-long introductory course frequently taken at the start of the college career for STEM-intending students. It is broadly found to be difficult, and many students struggle. Stoichiometry describes the relationships between compounds and elements in a reaction. It is a fundamental concept that is taught in the first semester of General Chemistry as a building block for the understanding of future concepts in second-semester and upper-level chemistry courses. Students have a difficult time conceptualizing stoichiometry because it involves a combination of algorithms and builds off of other fundamentals. However, studies claiming to focus …

Providing engineering undergraduate students opportunities to connect real-world applications with theory is key to preparing them for the workforce; however, this task often requires a balancing act between meeting course objectives in content-heavy core engineering undergraduate courses and providing experiences that connect real-world applications with theory. This study seeks to address this problem through the integration of online discussion prompts to promote a connection to real-world practical applications. The study included undergraduate students enrolled in three engineering core courses. The hypothesis was that participation in online discussions (using prompts) would lead to 1) an increase in student empowerment towards self-regulated …

Reconsidering Undergraduate Anatomy And Physiology Curriculum, Eric Michael Walsh
Reconsidering Undergraduate Anatomy And Physiology Curriculum, Eric Michael Walsh
Theses and Dissertations
In the past 50 years several convergent factors have spurred unprecedented change in anatomy and physiology (A&P) instruction. An explosion of biomedical knowledge, an increased demand for students well-versed in A&P, and decreased resources for the course has provoked a vast array of research. However, most studies employ one of three strategies to enact change: testing the effectiveness of new pedagogies, exploring the utility of new technologies, or documenting learning in new contexts. By comparison, a much smaller body of research focuses on changing the A&P curriculum to improve student learning. To address this gap, the musculoskeletal curriculum for an …

One of the keys to science and environmental literacy is systems thinking. Learning how to think about the interactions between systems, the far-reaching effects of a system, and the dynamic nature of systems are all critical outcomes of science learning. However, students need support to develop systems thinking skills in undergraduate geoscience classrooms. While systems thinking-focused instruction has the potential to benefit student learning, gaps exist in our understanding of students’ use of systems thinking to operationalize and model SHS, as well as their metacognitive evaluation of systems thinking. To address this need, we have designed, implemented, refined, and studied …
