Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications

Undergraduate degree programs named “Physiology” have existed for over 50 yr. The number of programs and enrolled students have been growing since ~2005 (5, 9). There are many thousands of students currently enrolled in physiology pro- grams across the United States and indeed across the world. Despite the long history and current popularity of the physiol- ogy major, there is no coordinated plan articulated for the design, administration, or assessment of degree programs in physiology at the undergraduate level.

Although several professional societies have invested in under- graduate physiology education in various ways, none has under- taken the task of …

Exploring Student Motivation In Quantitative Biology, Alexander Richard Kulacki Sep 2020

Exploring Student Motivation In Quantitative Biology, Alexander Richard Kulacki

Master's Theses and Capstones

The field of biology is becoming increasingly reliant on quantitative tools, methods, and techniques, driving a need for incoming biologists to have robust quantitative skills. However, efforts to incorporate more quantitative skills at the undergraduate level are hampered by low student engagement with math in biology. Students’ motivation towards quantitative biology can provide insight into how best to increase their engagement and thus performance with these topics. This thesis examines students’ motivation towards math in biology through two key constructs: 1) students’ self-efficacy, through the theoretical lens of Social Cognitive Theory; and 2) students’ task-values, through the theoretical lens of …

A Statistical Analysis Of The Unm Facets Design Identity & Beliefs Survey Data, Clarissa A. Sorensen-Unruh May 2020

A Statistical Analysis Of The Unm Facets Design Identity & Beliefs Survey Data, Clarissa A. Sorensen-Unruh

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

The NSF-funded FACETS (Formation of Accomplished Chemical Engineers for Transforming Society, NSF Award 1623105) grant aims to transform the undergraduate engineering experience in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of New Mexico to address attrition within engineering majors, especially among underserved populations (Brainard & Carlin, 1998). The UNM FACETS Design Identity & Beliefs survey, an assessment tool used as part of the research of the grant, generated the dataset used in this study. I performed several different statistical analyses on the dataset, including confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), principal component analysis (PCA), and cluster analysis. The …

Leadership In Public Accounting Firms, Nimisha Budhwani May 2020

Leadership In Public Accounting Firms, Nimisha Budhwani

2020 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

This paper serves to investigate leadership styles experienced and exerted by leaders at various levels in a public accounting firm. The focus of this study is on the Big4 accounting firms located in Dallas and Fort Worth. In this study, we investigate how accounting has evolved over the years to form the public accounting culture that we know of today. As the study is about effective leadership styles, we review the development of various leadership theories over the years. Then, we go on to discussing some of the most prominent leadership styles as per Lewin’s Leadership Theory. Once understanding the …

On The Vanishing Of Self Tor, Tatheer Ajani May 2020

On The Vanishing Of Self Tor, Tatheer Ajani

2020 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

The Tor functor plays a large role in homological algebra and its uses include defining generalized algebraic structures such as the homology of groups and associative algebras. Many proven properties of Tor involve two distinct R-modules A and B, but self Tor concerns a single module, in other words, A = B. This work takes a look at the classical case of the vanishing of Tor when A is the quotient of R by an ideal and uses the definitions and theorems we develop in order to generalize the classical case. We begin definitions of chain complexes, homology and exactness, …

Driving The Irobot Create 2: Command Functions, Sophie Soueid May 2020

Driving The Irobot Create 2: Command Functions, Sophie Soueid

2020 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

A driver library in the C programming language was developed to interface between the iRobot Create® 2 Programmable Robot’s command functions and the MSP432P401R via Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (UART). This allows for quick and simple development of microcontroller control over the Create 2’s command functions. It utilizes information from the iRobot Open Interface to reduce the complicated series of data in the form of arrays that have to be sent to the iRobot microcontroller down to individual functions. The driver that interfaces between these two devices greatly increases the ease of access to hobbyist programmers using the Create 2 and …

Cost Of Ownership Analysis Of An Hvac System, Pawan Panth May 2020

Cost Of Ownership Analysis Of An Hvac System, Pawan Panth

2020 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

A private owner has decided to build a new 17,500 square foot document storage and archive center in Mumbai, India. This facility will store rare documents, books, manuscripts, photos, and audio recordings in a manner to ensure the preservation of historical items. The center will be open to the public, Monday through Saturday from 8:00 – 18:00. The project is to design an HVAC system for the archives center. HVAC, named for Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning, is a compound system which involves a system of fluid exchange to allow the closed surface to regulate its internal temperature for comfortable …

Electronic Cooling Of Airbus Helicopter Control Panel, Cristobal Garces May 2020

Electronic Cooling Of Airbus Helicopter Control Panel, Cristobal Garces

2020 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

The technological necessities of the modern helicopter are always evolving. However, helicopters themselves are rarely modified to compensate for these new technologies. Because of this, as more precise electrical equipment replaces archaic analog instruments, unexpected issues arise in these older vehicles that were not present before. Temperatures within the helicopter cabin and control panel reach dangerous levels, causing extreme discomfort for the pilot as well as causing equipment failure. To amend this issue, cooling methods must be employed to prevent failure of instrumentation which will also reduce temperatures in the cabin. The primary goal of the project is to create …

Targeted Nano Scale Drug Carrier Production And Separation Using Microfluidics, Ali Mohamedi May 2020

Targeted Nano Scale Drug Carrier Production And Separation Using Microfluidics, Ali Mohamedi

2020 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Drug delivery is an essential part to treating patients, especially those who have cancer. While many treatments include conventional delivery of anti-tumor drugs through intravenous administration, a large growing field has come in the form of nano-scale drug carriers. These drug carriers are usually produced through tedious batches in large scale batches. In this project the production of nanoscale drug carriers is shown to be automated through microfluidic devices. In addition, the nanoscale carriers are shown to be conjugated with targeting factors and purified through a unique separation method. The device will include microchannels made from Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) material in …

Screw It: A Computer Vision Approach To Identify Screws And Fasteners, Cristian Garces May 2020

Screw It: A Computer Vision Approach To Identify Screws And Fasteners, Cristian Garces

2020 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Screw/fastener identification has been an issue that most technicians/mechanics have faced in their lifetimes. What kind of screw is it? Metric, Imperial, M5 13 mm, or ¾ inch? Without the proper tools (such as a screw gauge, calipers, rulers, etc.), this process may take a significant amount of time to identify screws. What this project aims to achieve is to develop a cheap and simple application that can quickly identify screw types. This is achieved simply by taking a picture of a screw and wait as the software identifies the necessary information without the hassle of doing anything by hand. …
