Lorem Ipsum, A Story About Words And Pictures: What They Can Do, And What They Can't, David Huth
Lorem Ipsum, A Story About Words And Pictures: What They Can Do, And What They Can't, David Huth
Theses
Everything we understand about the world comes to us through, and can be captured by, the linguistic use of words and pictures. Or does it? This is a question that addresses the core function and purpose of visual communications design. The question is explored in this film thematically, narratively, and technically, by portraying a story about a person struggling to understand language and solve a unique, high stakes design problem: the library cataloging of an entire human life. This is a creative project that uses computer graphics design technology and the unique presentation of typographical design problems to provoke thought …
Typophoto: The Visual Dimensionality, Kitae Kim
Typophoto: The Visual Dimensionality, Kitae Kim
Theses
This thesis will first document how both typography and photography have merged into a pure form of communication: typophoto. Simultaneously, the study will refine the visual parameters for understanding the concept of typophoto through an examination of the works of a number of designers, design movements and visual theories. The final goal of this thesis study will be to explore a new interpretation of typophoto and to extend its use in the new digital era. In 1925, the designer, painter, photographer and film maker Laszl6 Moholy-Nagy first mentioned the concept or theory of typophoto in Malerei Photographic Film. Typophoto was …
Legibility: How Precedents Established In Print Impact On-Screen And Dynamic Typography, Heidi Specht
Legibility: How Precedents Established In Print Impact On-Screen And Dynamic Typography, Heidi Specht
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The printed word has been commonplace in society for over 500 years; the written word has been in existence for thousands. The primary intent of the written or printed word has historically been to be read. With that goal, rules and formats have developed over the centuries as aids to legibility. Naturally, these guidelines have been developed for the printed, or static typographic page. As our sophistication with and acceptance of technology grows, however, we increasingly turn to the computer or television screen for written information. Additionally, graphic designers and artists are questioning the role of the printed word as …

The New Thaipography, Chotima Vongviriyatham
Theses
This thesis is about designing a new Thai typeface. The project attempts to increase Thai typefaces options for Thai designers. The range of existing Thai typeface selection is limited, for use in text and display situations. There are several problems of Thai typeface usage at both the display and text type level. This project focuses primarily on the development of a new typeface for use in display situations. Thai designers use a single typeface for a wide range of products without regard for the differences between the products. Through attempting to solve the problem of limited options, this project includes …
Women Typeface Designers, Laura Webber
Women Typeface Designers, Laura Webber
Theses
Nowhere is there a single, exclusive publication containing biographies, type specimens, and photographs of the many women typeface designers. From source to source, one will usually find the same names of male typeface designers repeated. However, one must refer to many sources to compile a list of women typeface designers. In an age of rapid access to all sorts of reference information, it seems silly that one must be forced to search many sources and possibly never find all they are looking for. This thesis project provides a single reference source of women typeface designers and samples of their typefaces …

The Relationship Between Typographic Design And Photography: Effectively Combining Type With Image, Kristen Leigh Bell
Theses
This thesis project examines the way in which typographic and photographic variables influence visual communication.
A Metaphysical And Linguistic Approach To Type Design And Typography, Ivan Terestschenko Rocha
A Metaphysical And Linguistic Approach To Type Design And Typography, Ivan Terestschenko Rocha
Theses
Significant changes have taken place in the type design as a result of what has often been termed "the desktop revolution." With the popularization and increased availability to the average person of typographic tools formerly available only to professionals type is slowly moving into the realm of personal communication. This move has sparked significant controversy among the various schools of typographic thought, but little consensus exists. As well, technological developments are contributing to a widening of the definition of what constitutes a typeface. This study, then, will examine the current views of type design as an art form and the …

From Constructivism To Deconstructivism, Gladys Brenner
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis deals with four major design movements, beginning with Constructivism, and ending with Deconstructivism, including two other movements, as intermediate links, that developed in the period between International - Swiss Design and Postmodernism. The purpose of this thesis is to explain in a visual time-line, the interrelationships of these movements while at the same time visually represent their concepts. Also it leads to an analysis and discussion of the role of Deconstructivism in graphic design.
