Insane In The Brain, Blood, And Lungs: Gender-Specific Manifestations Of Hysteria, Chlorosis, & Consumption In 19th-Century Literature, Anna P. Scanlon

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation examines literary and medical texts from throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to better understand prevailing attitudes about gender and disease. The project traces the progression of three diseases – consumption, chlorosis, and hysteria – throughout the long nineteenth century, paying particular attention to the stereotypes and prevailing medical notions of each illness. In general, this work examines the influence of lovesickness, female-patient/male-doctor dynamics, and pathology on the endemic or epidemic nature of each disease. In particular, the first three chapters of this project study tuberculosis – or consumption as it was called in the nineteenth century …

The Current State Of Animal Models And Genomic Approaches Towards Identifying And Validating Molecular Determinants Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Infection And Tuberculosis Disease, Allison N Bucsan, Smriti Mehra, Shabaana A Khader, Deepak Kaushal

2010-2019 OA Pubs

Animal models are important in understanding both the pathogenesis of and immunity to tuberculosis (TB). Unfortunately, we are beginning to understand that no animal model perfectly recapitulates the human TB syndrome, which encompasses numerous different stages. Furthermore, Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection is a very heterogeneous event at both the levels of pathogenesis and immunity. This review seeks to establish the current understanding of TB pathogenesis and immunity, as validated in the animal models of TB in active use today. We especially focus on the use of modern genomic approaches in these models to determine the mechanism and the role of specific …

The association between tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes mellitus (DM) had a common place in the literature up to the first half of the 20th century, but virtually disappeared with the discovery of insulin to treat DM and antibiotics to cure TB. In the late 1990s the literature began to re-emerge with the worldwide increase in type 2 DM, particularly in TB-endemic countries. Today, type 2 DM is the most prevalent comorbidity among TB patients and the World Health Organization considers it a threat to TB control. We summarize the literature on TB and DM up to the 1960s. Then we …

Dose Dispensing Tool For Pediatric Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis, Miza Mwanza, Ebony N. Smith, Jamie H. Au, Wei Wei Buchsteiner

ENGS 89/90 Reports

There are no current second-line antibiotics for children with Multidrug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR TB). Current methods to treat pediatric MDR TB consist of splitting up adult formulated pills in accordance to the WHO’s recommended dosages, which depend on the weight and age of the child. This process is very inconsistent, tedious, and time consuming when using the state-of-the-art tools (kitchen knives, standard pill cutters). Under the sponsorship of Health Advocacy Innovations (HAI), we developed a mechanical tool that makes ingesting pills for child patients more convenient, consistent, and swift. Our dose-dispensing tool cuts pills into quarters, stores 30 pills, dispenses …

Development Of Luminescent Tools For Use In The Study Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Krista A. Moore

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the causative agent of tuberculosis, is a growing problem worldwide due to the emergence of multi-drug resistant and extensively-drug resistant strains of the bacteria. A key to combatting the spread of these strains lies in the understanding of gene expression occurring in Mtb. This study focuses on the development and optimization of a luciferase-based bioluminescent transcriptional reporter that can be used to monitor gene expression in Mtb. The luminescent signal emitted from the reporter can be measured and correlated with the level of transcription of certain genes. This study focuses specifically on a gene called whiB7 which …

Pulmonary Vein Thrombosis Secondary To Tuberculosis In A Non-Hiv Infected Patient, Yonas Raru, Jason Ballengee, Mahmoud Abouzid, Samson Teka Jan 2019

Pulmonary Vein Thrombosis Secondary To Tuberculosis In A Non-Hiv Infected Patient, Yonas Raru, Jason Ballengee, Mahmoud Abouzid, Samson Teka

Pulmonology

Tuberculosis has been suggested as an independent risk factor for thromboembolism due to a hypercoagulable state induced by changes in clotting factors, protein C and vascular endothelium. Pulmonary vein thrombosis (PVT) is a rare, potentially serious and life-threatening condition that can be caused by tuberculosis. Its rare occurrence is due to a rich network of venous collateral vessels that drain the lung. PVT can also occur following lobectomy for malignancy, lung transplantation, radiofrequency catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation, sclerosing mediastinitis and following metastatic cancer, such as liposarcoma. Pulmonary vein thrombosis is difficult to diagnose clinically and requires a combination of …

Makara Journal of Science

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious diseasecaused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis). TB is still a major health problem. The Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccineis the only one available for TB and is known to confer variable levels of protection. Because of thisvariability, a new vaccine is needed to control TB. Proteins secreted by M.tuberculosisare known to induce protective immunity. Within the genome of M. tuberculosis, there is a family of proteins called resuscitation promoting factor (Rpf), which playsa role in the reactivation of M. tuberculosis. RpfD is amember of the Rpf family that has been shown to be immunogenic, makingitsuitable for …

Identification Of Bhlhe40 And Irg1 As Essential Regulators Of The Inflammatory Response To Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Jeremy Peter Huynh

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Protective immune responses to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) must induce bactericidal functions while minimizing damage to the lung. Such responses require precise control of pro- and anti-inflammatory factors to regulate the recruitment and function of protective immune cells but the mechanisms by which this control is exerted remain incompletely defined. Basic helix-loop-helix family, member e40 (Bhlhe40) is a transcription factor known to regulate production of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines that affect protective immunity to Mtb. Immune-responsive Gene 1 (Irg1) is an enzyme that generates itaconate, a metabolite with potential anti-inflammatory and antibacterial roles during Mtb infection. The impact of Bhlhe40 and …

Mycobacterium tuberculosis continues to cause devastating levels of mortality due to tuberculosis (TB). The failure to control TB stems from an incomplete understanding of the highly specialized strategies that M. tuberculosis utilizes to modulate host immunity and thereby persist in host lungs. Here, we show that M. tuberculosis induced the expression of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), an enzyme involved in tryptophan catabolism, in macrophages and in the lungs of animals (mice and macaque) with active disease. In a macaque model of inhalation TB, suppression of IDO activity reduced bacterial burden, pathology, and clinical signs of TB disease, leading to increased host …

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (New York) Publications and Research

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection is the ninth leading cause of death worldwide, with many individuals with undiagnosed active or latent disease. The presence of parenchymal lung disease, such as interstitial lung disease (ILD), has been suggested to increase the risk of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). In the clinical setting of ILD, the diagnosis of an underlying MTB infection may be challenging due to the interstitial process and underlying fibrosis, which may mask the infection. An atypical presentation and misleading radiological patterns may delay the diagnosis of the underlying MTB infection. Herein, we describe a unique case of ILD complicated by active …
