Education Of Trauma-Informed Care In The School System: An Occupational Therapy Perspective, Jada F. Muller
Education Of Trauma-Informed Care In The School System: An Occupational Therapy Perspective, Jada F. Muller
Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstones
This capstone experience focused on providing education to faculty and staff of elementary-aged children. This includes education about signs of trauma, techniques to use for the classroom, and how occupational therapy can contribute to trauma-informed interventions in the school system. More research is needed to show the implications of trauma informed practice and the role of occupational therapy within the school system. To address this gap, this doctoral project was designed to fulfill the need for trauma-informed education and add to the body of knowledge. This project took place at Denison Independent School District, where I created deliverables addressing different …

The wrist joint is a complex articulation that involves the distal radius, ulna, eight carpal bones (scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, pisiform, trapezium, trapezoid, capitate, and hamate), and the bases of the metacarpals. Trans-scaphoid perilunate fracture-dislocations are complex wrist injuries, most commonly resulting from high-energy mechanisms involving hyperextension and ulnar deviation. Prompt diagnosis and surgical management are essential in restoring wrist function and stability. This report focuses on the case of a 28-year-old male who sustained a trans-scaphoid perilunate dislocation with multiple associated fractures after an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) rollover accident. Surgical intervention included median nerve decompression, open reduction and internal fixation …

International Journal on Responsibility
Unaccompanied children and adolescents who migrate from Central America and Mexico into the United States (U.S.) are exposed to and experience trauma throughout the process of migration. These traumatic experiences result in an increasing prevalence of psychiatric illnesses and challenges to treatment. This study presents a psychiatric patient record review of minors and their complex trauma. Unaccompanied migrant minors (UMM) ages 12-17 (28 males and 22 females; n = 50) received comprehensive psychiatric assessments at the El Paso Texas Tech Child and Adolescent Psychiatry outpatient clinic. Their charts were reviewed for psychiatric diagnosis, treatment progress, and trauma experiences before, during, …

"I Probably Wouldn't Be As Happy": Childhood Parental Separation And Posttraumatic Growth Narratives From Eight College Students, Meagan C. Arrastia-Chisholm, Hoa Nguyen, Africa Pippin, Heather M. Kelley Ph.D.
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
Parental separation during childhood leads to long-lasting psychological and socioemotional impact on the lives of emerging adults as they transition into higher education. The long-term effects of childhood parental separation on college students' academic performance, physical health, and overall mental wellbeing are well-documented. However, students can develop resilience to cope with challenging family and life experiences and even demonstrate post-traumatic growth. Post-traumatic growth refers to the positive changes and experiences college students discover after enduring life disruptions, such as being separated from their parents at an early age. To better understand the connection between parental separation and posttraumatic growth, a …

Trauma-Informed Teaching Guidebook A Resource For Supporting Students, Autumn Shipley-Mellon
Masters Projects
Many students in the K–12 education system have experienced trauma, yet schools often lack the tools and structures to adequately support them. This project addresses that gap by creating a trauma-informed teaching guidebook for educators. Grounded in current research on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and trauma’s effects on child development, the guidebook provides practical, easy-to-implement strategies. It focuses on building supportive relationships, creating safe and predictable environments, managing behavior with empathy, and designing classrooms that foster emotional regulation and connection. The goal is to support both student well-being and teacher effectiveness. The guidebook is intended to be shared with educators …

The Lasting Impact Of Childhood Maltreatment On Parenting: A Qualitative Study, Leslie K. Moorman
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This qualitative study explored how Child Protection Service (CPS)-involved parents made meaning of their parenting and what informed their meaning making. Bronfenbrenner’s Person Process Context Time (PPCT) framework was utilized to examine the context of parenting within the CPS system. The PPCT theoretical assumptions were used to discuss the results of the study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 participants, from diverse ethnic backgrounds. All but one returned for a second interview. The CPS-involved parents disclosed childhood experiences that were consistent with childhood maltreatment. The participants were preoccupied with stories of their own childhood and not wanting to parent like …

Counseling Faculty Publications
Migrants often face severe trauma before and during their journey, leading to mental health challenges such as post-traumatic stress disorder and acute stress. This study explores the Flash Technique (FT) as a one-time intervention for newly arrived migrants. Twelve healthcare professionals and 11 student interns trained in FT provided interventions to 55 migrants, who showed substantial improvements in subjective units of distress scores. The findings highlight the efficacy of a low-intensity intervention in a humanitarian context, which can serve to mitigate the long-term psychological impact of trauma.

Experiences Of Group Support For Partners Of Sex Offenders, Monika Szabo
Experiences Of Group Support For Partners Of Sex Offenders, Monika Szabo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Intimate relationships with individuals who have committed sex offenses significantly stigmatize and traumatize partners. Partners also face barriers to effective treatment, negatively impacting both themselves and their children affected by these offenses. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to gain an understanding of partners’ experiences with support groups in coping with trauma symptoms and stigma, thus addressing a gap in the literature. Grounded in theoretical concepts of trauma, mutual aid, and stigma, how social support dynamics facilitate healing by investigating coping strategies and support group stages to understand participants’ healing journeys were examined. Data were collected from 10 …
The Moderating Effects Of Adult Attachment And Emotional Intimacy On The Relationship Between Aces And Mental Health In Social Work Students, Cheryl Lind Nitz
The Moderating Effects Of Adult Attachment And Emotional Intimacy On The Relationship Between Aces And Mental Health In Social Work Students, Cheryl Lind Nitz
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Social work students report significantly more adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) than other majors or the general population. ACEs increase the risk of depression, anxiety, and stress (DAS) and can impact students’ ability to effectively serve future clients. Attachment theory and current research suggest a substantial potential therapeutic impact of secure adult attachments, particularly those with high emotional intimacy (EI), for those with ACEs. This study explored the moderating effect of primary adult attachment (PAA) on the relationship between ACEs and mental health. The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE-10) Scale, the State Adult Attachment Measure (SAAM), the Functional Analytic Psychotherapy Intimacy Scale …
Exploring Biblical Language In Trauma Processing, Kathy B. Hoppe
Exploring Biblical Language In Trauma Processing, Kathy B. Hoppe
Salubritas: International Journal of Spirit-Empowered Counseling
Clients may often find themselves struggling with accessing traumatic experiences in therapy, thereby developing an avoidance of trauma that impedes healing. Strategies for reducing trauma processing may be difficult to identify effectively. This project suggests several means by which therapists can utilize the language of scripture, including scriptural narrative, metaphor, and poetry, as a therapeutic intervention with conservative Christian clients who are pursuing trauma processing. The proposed approach assists clients in explaining their traumatic events in a secure setting, hence preventing the common hyperarousal symptoms that are upsetting. The treatment can enhance the effectiveness of evidence-based practices. It incorporates several …
School-Based Trauma-Focused Small Group For Early Elementary Students, Kalli F. Anderson
School-Based Trauma-Focused Small Group For Early Elementary Students, Kalli F. Anderson
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Exposure to trauma has been linked to a number of detrimental effects on children, including decreased or stunted cognitive abilities, increase in externalizing and internalizing symptoms, negative effects on relationships with peers and caregivers, and decreased academic achievements (Perry, 2002; Van Der Kolk, 2005; AAP, 2014; SAMHSA, 2018). It is estimated that one fourth of students will experience at least one traumatic event before the age of 6 and up to one third will experience a traumatic event before the age of 17 (Briggs-Gowan et al. 2010; Finkelhor et al. 2015; McLaughlin et al., 2013). Many students who …

Exploring Trauma Education And The Intersection Of Self-Efficacy, Ashlea Yearwood
Dissertations, 2020-current
Trauma education in counselor training programs is not only required for those accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), but a critical component in preparing counselors-in-training to work with clients who have been directly or indirectly impacted by a traumatic event. This three-article dissertation includes a conceptual manuscript, qualitative manuscript, and a quantitative manuscript regarding trauma education for counselors. The conceptual manuscript offers an approach to mitigating compassion fatigue through the utilization of attachment-based supervision when working with counselors-in-training. The qualitative manuscript aimed to utilize an interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore and understand what …
Grief As Slip: (How Little I Show) An Exploration In Clay, When Words Are Not Enough, Michelle A. Smith
Grief As Slip: (How Little I Show) An Exploration In Clay, When Words Are Not Enough, Michelle A. Smith
Masters Theses, 2020-current
Grief as Slip (how little I show) implies that even as we acknowledge our mortality and the fleeting nature of life, we still only reveal a fraction of our true selves or our deeper realities. The ceramic artwork in this exhibition carries and conveys a journey through the present and remembered emotions of the artists’ personal narrative. By juxtaposing the tactile nature of clay with the ethereal quality of human experience, Smith contemplates the profound interplay between material transformation and emotional resilience. The exhibition’s intent is to translate the essence of complex emotional states into abstracted forms so they can …
Cultural Self-Harm Differences, Erin E. Simmons
Cultural Self-Harm Differences, Erin E. Simmons
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
This study is based on the evident cultural differences in self-harm behaviors and what those behaviors look like specifically for individuals that identify as Black or African American. Previous literature suggests that cultural differences in self-harm exist but very little research centers Black experiences and their connection to self-harm. Self-harm is considered a broad term, and it encompasses a variety of behaviors, some more common than others, but these common behaviors are typically exclusively explored within only a few demographics with a low Black participant pool. This contributes to the assumed lack of self-harm among the Black community but through …
Telling Their Stories: Contextualizing The Narrative, Legal Atmosphere, And Need For Individualized Care For Human Trafficking Victims, Joy M. Brown
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Though known in name, human trafficking is a silent plague that often goes unseen. Its prevalence is rendered invisible by both the circumstances in which trafficking occurs and the correlation it possesses with other criminal matters. Human trafficking is a deeply individual crime that is multi-layered, and thus is one that requires unique legislation. This essay seeks to ignite clarity as to what prevention, rehabilitation, and healing look like for victims of human trafficking via interviews with providers of legal and social services for survivors. Building on the content of these interviews and my own experience as a direct-care volunteer …

Impact Of Childhood Exposure To Parental Substance Misuse On Adults, Jennifer Martinez
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Studies show that children who experienced parental substance misuse are at greater risk of developing symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD, behavioral problems, or becoming a substance misuser later in adult life. This quantitative study used an on-line self-administered survey to examine whether adults who experienced parental substance misuse in childhood experienced greater levels of trauma in later life than those who did not experience parental substance misuse in childhood. This study used an independent variable t-test to compare participant scores on self-reported experiences of trauma between two groups: those who experienced parental substance misuse in childhood and those who did …
Effective Interventions For Women With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Kathryn Antoinette Gonzales
Effective Interventions For Women With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Kathryn Antoinette Gonzales
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Women diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often undergo powerless treatment interventions according to research. Institutionalized inequalities among service systems challenge women to receive access, begin, engage, and complete mental health services for PTSD. This mixed-methods systematic review sought to determine interventions that are effective for treating this client population. The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) tool was used to screen four different electronic databases: PsycINFO, Google Scholar, EBSCO, and OneSearch to identify peer-reviewed articles under a purposive sampling method strategy. Of the 159 studies screened, 15 met the inclusion criteria for this review (n =15). …

Pouring From An Empty Cup: A Qualitative Exploration Of Early-Career School Social Workers' Lived Experiences With Secondary Trauma, Chatelah D. Brown
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore how early-career school social workers in public schools in Georgia described their lived experiences of secondary trauma. This study examined the contextual elements that contributed to secondary trauma. The findings may inform training for school districts to improve climate and culture, develop learning workshops, and create supportive systems for early-career social workers exposed to student traumas. Theories guiding this study included Urie Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory and Bruce Biddle’s role theory. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory addresses the levels of influence on mental and physical wellness and their impact on human development. It …
Pastoral Counselors And The Implementation Of Eye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing, Robyn Jarrell
Pastoral Counselors And The Implementation Of Eye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing, Robyn Jarrell
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The problem is that since EMDR is not practiced at CCC, it decreases the quality of care and extends the number of counseling sessions. If Christian Counseling Center’s counselors use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing psychotherapy for trauma clients, then an increase in counseling quality will be demonstrated by decreased sessions. The study also sought to reveal EMDR's value to clients’ counseling sessions, given that CBT is the standard therapeutic approach in pastoral counseling settings. Qualitative methods included journaling, questionnaires, and focus groups. Two pastoral counselors completed the necessary training and adhered to EMDR procedures while treating eleven clients using …

Investigating The Correlation Between Racially Based Trauma And The Imposter Phenomenon In High-Achieving Black Women, Tarra Lynn Winfield Ray
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study investigates the imposter phenomenon, racially based trauma, and how the two correlate among high-achieving Black women. High achieving for this writing refers to Black women who attend college or graduate school, those in professional positions that require a degree, advanced degree, or professional licensure (i.e., corporate executives, medical doctors, attorneys, mental health clinicians, etc.), and entrepreneurs. Many current studies have focused on the unique and complex experiences that high-achieving Black women face while working to achieve goals and gain success. Many of these women have experienced racially based trauma, and many endorse the simultaneous experiencing of the imposter …

Adverse Childhood Experiences: Healing Through Storytelling And Mindful Narrative Therapy, Julie Kemp
Mindfulness Studies Theses
This study presents research about the nature and prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), the mental and physical impacts to individuals exposed to ACEs, and incorporating mindfulness practices into therapeutic approaches to treating them, particularly Mindfulness-Based Narrative Therapy (MBNT). It is important because ACEs have become a global crisis, with the potential for interfering with psychological and physical development, early mortality, and other harmful life outcomes. This thesis provides critical information for mindfulness teachers and practitioners, therapists, educators, regulators, parents, and individuals subjected to ACEs.
The methodology includes extensive literature searches for narrative therapy and mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) in peer-reviewed …
Predictors Of Treatment Completion In Alternatives For Families: A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Katharine Murphy
Predictors Of Treatment Completion In Alternatives For Families: A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Katharine Murphy
Theses and Dissertations
Child maltreatment is linked to a range of adverse outcomes, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and mood disorders, and behavioral and interpersonal problems (Copeland et al., 2007; McLaughlin et al., 2013; Silverman et al., 2008). Children subjected to abuse by caregivers have the highest risk of PTSD onset (Alisic et al., 2014). To mitigate these effects, Alternatives for Families: A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT; Kolko, et al., 2011) was developed to improve caregiver-child relationships. AF-CBT has proven effective in reducing family conflict, improving child symptomatology, and minimizing the potential for child abuse (Kolko, 1996a, 1996b; Swenson & Brown, 1999). …
