The Impact Of Prayer On The Ministries Of D.L. Moody, C.H. Spurgeon, And Billy Graham: A Descriptive Study, Rodney Baker

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study describes the significance of prayer in the nineteenth century ministries of evangelist-revivalist D. L. Moody, pastor-evangelist C. H. Spurgeon, and the twentieth-century ministry of evangelist Billy Graham. Furthermore, a description of the three most successful evangelical ministries of the last two centuries will demonstrate the vital role of prayer in their effective Christian ministries.

After extensively researching the lives of D. L. Moody, C. H. Spurgeon, and Billy Graham, it is clear that prayer played a major role in their lives and, according to personal statements, was a key to their success. While various facets of their ministry …

Completed At Calvary: An Examination Of The Extent Of The Atonement, John M. Poe, Ii Apr 1999

Completed At Calvary: An Examination Of The Extent Of The Atonement, John M. Poe, Ii

Senior Honors Theses

Calvinism's "limited atonement" is the pillar that has been notorious for being the "weak link" in the Calvinists' theological system (TULIP). This paper purposed to delve into the legitimacy of their argument, using the popular penal theory as the foundation for determining the extent of the atonement. Here Christ's sacrifice is seen as the act accomplishing such things as reconciliation and redemption, instead of merely providing potentials effectual upon faith, for all those to whom the atonement extends. Three problematic texts were examined and dealt with, maintaining consistency theologically. From the basis of the penal view, both universal salvation and …

The Enemies Of God's People-A Comparison Of Pauline And Jewish Exegesis, Charles Schulz May 1998

The Enemies Of God's People-A Comparison Of Pauline And Jewish Exegesis, Charles Schulz

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In light of the current re-evaluation of points of identity and divergence between Pauline Christianity and Judaism, this thesis presents a study of how each religion applied a single motif from the Psalter: the enemies of God's people. We start from the obvious common ground, the Old Testament shared by both Paul and the Jew as their sacred text. The work focuses on the unique opportunity afforded by the text of Romans 3:9-20, where Paul cites the Old Testament depiction of the wicked enemies. Next, we survey how apocalyptic and rabbinic Judaism developed and employed the enemy theme. Our conclusion …

The Role Of A New Testament Deacon: An Office To Hold Or A Ministry To Perform, Waylan Lawrence Payne, Jr. May 1996

The Role Of A New Testament Deacon: An Office To Hold Or A Ministry To Perform, Waylan Lawrence Payne, Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The function of deacons in many Southern Baptist churches is inconsistent with biblical principles, creating confusion at the local church level. This phenomenon is substantiated by information gathered from available literature, surveys, and personal interviews with professors, pastors and deacons. The purpose of this paper is to present a biblical and historical basis for the diaconate and to provide successful deacon ministries as positive role models. Two church offices are recognized--pastor/elder/overseer and deacon. Deacons are not elders or overseers. When they attempt to perform as such, administrating church business, they are functionally violating New Testament principle and practice.

Is "Truly Man, Truly God" Truly Coherent? An Assessment Of Several Answers, Robert Bruce Foster Apr 1995

Is "Truly Man, Truly God" Truly Coherent? An Assessment Of Several Answers, Robert Bruce Foster

Senior Honors Theses

Critics have repeatedly charged that the orthodox formulation of the orthodox doctrine of the incarnation is logically incoherent. Several conservative writers have responded in various ways. Norman Geisler predicates logically incompatible attributes of Christ to his two natures. Millard Erickson relies on his version of the kenosis strategy. Thomas Morris formulates a two-minds model. Ronald Leigh steps out of the boundaries of orthodoxy and suggest a one-natured Christ. All of these views appear to suffer from various inadequacies. The best formulation of the incarnation doctrine is that of Kierkegaard's Absolute Paradox.

The Development And Implementation Of An Intercessory Prayer Ministry In The Local Church, Robert Houston Jackson, Jr. Mar 1995

The Development And Implementation Of An Intercessory Prayer Ministry In The Local Church, Robert Houston Jackson, Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

There are a limited number of Southern Baptist Churches in North Carolina that have an established intercessory prayer ministry. Consequently, there is diminished spiritual power and ministry effectiveness. Prayer releases the power of God to work in the lives of individuals, churches, and nations. It is therefore essential that churches become houses of prayer.

The purpose of this thesis project is to develop a plan that will impress upon the local church the necessity of establishing an intercessory ministry. Furthermore it will serve as a resource for the development of an intercessory prayer ministry.

When God Becomes Your Enemy- The Theology Of The Complaint Psalms, Ingvar Floysvik May 1994

When God Becomes Your Enemy- The Theology Of The Complaint Psalms, Ingvar Floysvik

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The experience of being forgotten, rejected or even attacked by God has been very real for people of all times. An untimely death in the family, prolonged sickness, unfair treatment in the community or in court, or on the larger scale, natural disasters, war and persecution, these and other catastrophes may make individuals or whole communities experience God as an enemy. Readers of the Bible recognize that income psalms the psalmists share these experiences. They complain to God that he has abandoned them or that he is angry with them. The present dissertation is an investigation into the theology of …
