A Devised Ethnodrama: Conscious Voices, Sonia Pasqual

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

Using techniques of storytelling, dance, poems, and monologues in the process of re-enacting life stories, the ensemble display issues that may be impeding society’s growth—discrimination against body image, blackness, females, and LGBTQ individuals. In addition, engagement in storytelling and performance can help the audience increase their cognitive skills, empathy, and ability to live a communal life. This evidence-based practice can transform lives and society. It has the potential of continuing to other faculties and with other departments, such as film, musical, and additional narratives. This specific work could be extended out beyond art and education into populations of any communities …

Harlots And Hooligans: The Representation Of Women In Hogarth’S Strolling Actresses Dressing In A Barn (1738), Hannah Arnold Jan 2021

Harlots And Hooligans: The Representation Of Women In Hogarth’S Strolling Actresses Dressing In A Barn (1738), Hannah Arnold

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Licensing Act egregiously hindered the English theatrical community when it was placed into effect by King George II in 1737. Strolling actors were thereby forbidden to perform in new plays for profit, forcing acting troupes to disband. This act was widely protested throughout England at the time, most notably by artist William Hogarth in his etching titled Strolling Actresses Dressing in a Barn. This etching cleverly protests the Licensing Act as well as a myriad of quandaries that plagued 18th-century English society, namely, gender roles both on and off the stage. Yet, what exactly is the …

Virtual Reality As A Versatile Tool For Research, Dissemination And Mediation In The Humanities, Paul François, Jeffrey Leichman, Florent Laroche, Françoise Rubellin Jan 2021

Virtual Reality As A Versatile Tool For Research, Dissemination And Mediation In The Humanities, Paul François, Jeffrey Leichman, Florent Laroche, Françoise Rubellin

Faculty Publications

The VESPACE project aims to revive an evening of theatre at the Foire Saint-Germain in Paris in the 18th century, by recreating spaces, atmospheres and theatrical entertainment in virtual reality. The venues of this fair have disappeared without leaving any archaeological traces, so their digital reconstruction requires fusing many different sources, including the expertise of historians, as well as of historians of theatre and literature. In this article, we present how we have used video game creation tools to enable the use of virtual reality in three key research stages in the human sciences, and particularly, in history or archaeology: …

Maiden, Martyr, Sinner, And Saint: Performing The Narratives Of Joan Of Arc, Emma Cox Jan 2021

Maiden, Martyr, Sinner, And Saint: Performing The Narratives Of Joan Of Arc, Emma Cox

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This Capstone Experience/Thesis Project, made possible through the WKU Mahurin Honors College, is a study of historiography, or the way history is written. Joan of Arc is used to explore historiography because she is a figure that is written in many ways, each version giving us a snippet of the whole picture. The show written based on my research is titled Jehanne. I wanted to tell Joan’s story, but not just one version of it; I wanted to tell the whole story of who she is, not just what she did or what she believed. Not only does Jehanne …

Group Playwriting Project, Thomas L. Rothacker

Open Educational Resources

This assignment is designed for any lecture based course that does not inherently have collaborative work or assignments as part of the curriculum. For any student taking a theatre arts course, understanding how it is to work with others and create something is one of the biggest lessons that can be learned. To take the pressure off the idea of "performance", this playwriting assignment starts with the role of the Playwright and how to create from the ground up.

Musical Theatre Education’S Influence On High School Students’ Self-Esteem, Michael John Penna Jan 2021

Musical Theatre Education’S Influence On High School Students’ Self-Esteem, Michael John Penna

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Studies have shown that middle school students’ involvement in performing arts classes helps to improve self-esteem, but there is a gap in understanding how high school students and teachers perceive the influence of musical theatre education on students’ self-esteem. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to extend research to include high school musical theatre students by examining how high school students and teachers perceive the influence of rehearsals, performance, and musical theatre education classes on students’ self-esteem and education goals. Bandura’s social cognitive theory and Kolb’s experiential learning theory were used as the conceptual framework. Eight students and …

The Well-Made Man: An Exploration Of George Tesman In Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler, Ryan Ernst Jan 2021

The Well-Made Man: An Exploration Of George Tesman In Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler, Ryan Ernst

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Hedda Gabler is one of the best-known works of Realism theatre, and the character, Hedda, is a showcase of dynamic and challenging work; but her husband, George Tesman, rarely, if ever, is showcased. Here I explain why George’s character deserves more attention and actually makes for a better protagonist than Hedda. Textual analysis shows the absence of the play’s parental figures and a rubber band metaphor illustrates how all the characters are con-nected to each other. The misconceptions and subtext concerning George: a social filtering mechanism, perception of character, George’s selflessness, how he is made fun of, the heart compared …

I did a writing response to the questions explaining my thoughts and how I think live streams would be utilized more even when everything does open up. I thought about how things used to be, especially with concerts and what I think should happen in the future for live shows.

Grit In The Performing Arts: A Mixed-Methods Study Of High School Theatre Student Perceptions Of Grit, Kelsey Gibson Jan 2021

Grit In The Performing Arts: A Mixed-Methods Study Of High School Theatre Student Perceptions Of Grit, Kelsey Gibson

Doctor of Education Dissertations

Previous grit research has not yet studied how the performing arts may have an impact on student grit scores and perceptions of grit. Grit is defined by two main characteristics: consistency of interest and perseverance of effort. Continued participation in an extracurricular theatre production requires students to maintain interest and sustain effort throughout the rehearsal and performance period. This mixed methods interpretivist research study examined how high school students from three groups (performing arts, non-performing arts, and non-arts) measured on Duckworth and Quinn’s (2009) Grit-S scale, as well as how performing arts students perceived their own grit after participation in …

There has been little research on NSP up until now and this study seeks to establish its importance as a training approach that has the potential to be transformative for the performers who practice it. The study utilised a multi-modal approach that included traditional and practice as research methodologies. Exploring Relationships Between Arts Administrators In Appalachian Kentucky And Tennessee And Their State Arts Agencies: A Qualitative Narrative Inquiry, Elise L. Kieffer Phd Dec 2020

Exploring Relationships Between Arts Administrators In Appalachian Kentucky And Tennessee And Their State Arts Agencies: A Qualitative Narrative Inquiry, Elise L. Kieffer Phd

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

This dissertation explores the relationship of arts administrators in isolated Appalachian communities in Kentucky and Tennessee with their respective representative state arts agencies. Using the narrative inquiry methodology, I participated in interviews with both groups of arts administrators and interpreted those findings through a conceptual framework from the field of healthcare (Feldman-Stewart & Brundage, 2008). This framework recognizes the breakdown of communication that sometimes occurs when one party (the doctor, or in this case, the state arts agency) holds the expertise and position of power, and the other party (the patient, or in my case, the small arts organization) lacks …

Fit For The Stage: The Function Of A Pre-Performance Warm-Up Routine For College Theatre Students, Emily Sullins Dec 2020

Fit For The Stage: The Function Of A Pre-Performance Warm-Up Routine For College Theatre Students, Emily Sullins

Senior Honors Theses

College theatre programs require students to perform in stage productions that demand a high level of stamina, endurance, strength, and flexibility. This level of athleticism makes injury rates more prevalent with one dance study documenting a 74% injury rate among participants (Chmelar et al., 1987, as cited in Malkogeorgos et al., 2011). In sports programs, warm-up protocols are utilized as injury prevention techniques. Due to the physical demands on college performers, a specific warm-up routine should be designed and implemented for each production. A properly conceived warm-up will include aerobic exercise, dynamic stretching, and movement patterns resembling those in the …

The Federal Theatre Project: A Model For Contemporary Lessons In Theatrical Accessibility, Lindsey Falgoust

Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects

This thesis explores the methods of the Federal Theatre Project to define and develop accessibility in the theatre and how the contemporary theatre landscape can take these efforts to serve as a lesson and develop a new approach for progressing representation and accessibility. There are many instances of theatres utilizing certain practices from the FTP; however, this thesis demonstrates the need for an all-encompassing adoption of FTP methods by the American theatre community at large. It will serve as a suggestion for the redefining process of the American theatre industry to expand its audience to equally serve the country’s diverse …

O'Neill's Authorial Voice: The Prismatic Autobiography Of Long Day's Journey Into Night, Madelyn D. Dundon

Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review

Since its premiere in Stockholm in the winter of 1956, Long Day's Journey Into Night has been the holy grail of dramaturges around the world. It is the quintessential psychological thriller—entirely autobiographical yet universal in its depiction of stubbornly faithful and hateful familial ties. Suffering in the public domain for the duration of his life and career, playwright Eugene O'Neill finally put pen to paper and exorcised his life's demons in the conceptualization of this preeminent work. Heretofore, most analyses of the play have been of its character, Edmund, as representative of O'Neill himself. This work attempts to delve into …

A History Of Nashville Children's Theatre: 1977-2019, Robert Roberts Nov 2020

A History Of Nashville Children's Theatre: 1977-2019, Robert Roberts

Student Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to collect a formalized history of Nashville Children’s Theatre (or NCT), a nonprofit arts organization, between the years of 1977 and 2019. Previous theses by students at other universities have recorded NCT’s history prior to 1977, but much of the company’s evolution during the time since has only been kept via a loose oral tradition amongst employees, an oral tradition that becomes increasingly distorted and destroyed as staff members and volunteers come and go from the organization or pass-away. This thesis project collected memories from 18 individuals who worked for, volunteered with, performed at, …
