DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
Since Persons with Disabilities (PWD) encounters countless challenges such as distinct protection risks which include high risk of violence, exploitation, abuse, and high levels of stigma, the researchers made a documentation of the whole process of their study which consists of workshops, rehearsals, and interviews that were intended for people with disabilities. It aims to give an overview of the experiences of the participants throughout the study. This is to empower disabled people to boost their self-confidence and self-esteem, and to be involved in the community. The researchers gathered four participants to undergo workshops using Ricky Curry’s workshop approach which …

Multo: A Performance On The Representation Of Undocumented Filipino Migrants And Overseas Workers Through The Theatrical Form Of Devising, Rigel Cassandra V. Hechanova
DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
Undocumented Filipinos, often addressed to as “TNTs”, meaning “tago nang tago”, are people who resided in a foreign country against their established immigration laws. Although the matter of migrating and working overseas has been going on for a number of years, the matter regarding overseas illegitimacy has been rarely discussed through the Philippine art medium, specifically, the theatre arts. In line with this, the artist-researcher was inspired to create a multiple-act performance that provides representation to the lives of undocumented Filipino workers / migrants and their loved ones left behind through the theatrical form of Devising. In terms of the …

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
Vincent van Gogh is one of the most famous painters in the world. His paintings, such as the “Starry Night”, and his many self-portraits are among the most well-known in the world for its precise brushwork and use of vivid colors. However, Vincent is remembered not only for his paintings, but also for his tortured life, which included slicing off his ear and committing suicide while working before his easel near the end of his miserable, misunderstood life. With the usage of some of the elements of Bertold Brecht’s methods of Epic Theatre, Vincent van Gogh’s complicated life as an …

The Shape Of Things: A Theatrical Examination Of The Progression Of Emotional Manipulation, Kylee Lorio
Honors Projects
In Neil LaBute's work, The Shape of Things, graduate art student Evelyn Thompson meets security guard and future muse, Adam Sorenson, in an art museum during his late-night shift. Their meeting poses the question of just how far humans are willing to go for love. In less than two hours, LaBute’s insight regarding manipulation between intimate partners calls the integrity of our own interpersonal relationships into question. This project encapsulates the materials of Bridgewater College student Kylee Lorio while directing this production during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Spaces Of The Tragic: Modern Dramatic Tragedy And Contemporary Memorial Design, Shiloh Bemis
Spaces Of The Tragic: Modern Dramatic Tragedy And Contemporary Memorial Design, Shiloh Bemis
Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
Humans use narrative to understand the world around us. At early ages we are exposed to storytelling with variable intent, from cautionary tales to the inspirational and everything in between. The dialectic strength of narrative mediums is well-known and well-studied. Theatre is one of the world’s oldest enduring forms of storytelling and has a strong ability to reflect and adapt with cultures as they develop, as a means of commentary and cultural reflection.
Architecture shares theatre’s ancient roots and has always been an important method of communication and expression. However, its tactics have historically been less narrative-centric than theatre and …

Changing Lives Through Art: A Book Review Of Stephen Snow’S Ethnodramatherapy, Johnny Saldana
The Qualitative Report
This book review introduces qualitative researchers to a specialized art form: ethnodramatherapy, the production of a play based on the study of the actions and thoughts of a group of people which aims to have a therapeutic effect on the individuals in the group. Stephen Snow’s Ethnodramatherapy: Integrating Research, Therapy, Theatre and Social Activism into One Method documents his decades-long work and expertise as a Registered Drama Therapist. Ethnodramatherapy is a multidisciplinary blend of qualitative research, mixed methods evaluation, arts-based research, dramatic improvisation for devised theatrical production, autoethnographic introspection, and—most notably—strategic therapeutic goals with selected participants from various populations. Ethnodramatherapy …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This MFA thesis defines Contemporary Blackface Theatre as exemplified in Dennis McIntyre’s Split Second, which was produced in Fall 2021 by the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Louisville. Cast as Val Johnson, I aimed to find the truth within a Black character created from the white playwright’s limited perspective. In addition to an analysis of Split Second, my study of Contemporary Blackface Theatre examines the racist ideologies from F.M. Alexander’s point of view on black people and how I create truthfulness in my own black body. I detail how I used the Black Acting Methods: …

Theatre & Dance ETDs
In this essay, I detail my growth as a writer through different periods of empathic learning. I further delve into this examination through my discovery of comedy and the lifelong process of understand the deep connections humans make with humor. I then discuss how my understanding of empathy allowed me to write my dissertation play, The Eccentrics, and create a world in which empathy among the characters can be a catalyst …

Serving As A Dramaturg To On Campus Productions: The Development And Execution Of Thea 6910: A Dramaturgy Of Three Plays, Megan Kimball
LMU Theses and Dissertations
In the Fall of 2021, I served as the dramaturge for the Loyola Marymount campus productions of Anna Deavere's Smiths, "Twilight Los Angeles," Brandon Jacob Jenkins, "Everybody "and Melanie Marnich's "These Shining Lives." One can't ignore the distinct and separate story designs of these plays. "Twilight Los Angeles" is a verbatim theatre style, with an arrangement of monologues. "Everybody" is a modern-day morality play with a lottery. "These shining lives" is a period piece set as a docudrama. My process for this thesis will be a reflective and experiential study on performing the role of the dramaturg for these three …

Strengthening Adolescents With Anxiety Through Drama Therapy, Jeremy M. Moeller
Strengthening Adolescents With Anxiety Through Drama Therapy, Jeremy M. Moeller
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
In recent years social anxiety has become increasingly common in adolescents, requiring nurturance and assistance. With so many forms of therapy available, however, it may be hard for someone to find a practice that suits them. Drama therapy serves as a good option. It is a fairly new practice that helps adolescents to become more expressive and engaging in their everyday lives, decreases their social anxieties, and builds a new sense of confidence. By gaining a deeper knowledge of theatre and its history, adolescents are also provided with a new outlet through which they can explore and continue to grow …
