The purpose of this intrinsic case study is to discover the approach of rural secondary students regarding their attainment and practice of digital citizenship in a learning environment that utilizes technology. The theory guiding this research study is Kohlberg’s theory of moral development as it emphasizes how individuals establish their ethics and values because digital citizenship teaches students to use the Internet in an ethical and appropriate manner. The qualitative inquiry was conducted using an intrinsic case study in a small rural secondary public school. Convenience sampling was utilized, giving way to 18 adolescent participants and 10 teachers at the …
Digital Literacy For Older Adult English Language Learners, Talley Caruso
Digital Literacy For Older Adult English Language Learners, Talley Caruso
Master's Projects and Capstones
When essential services transition to digital platforms, individuals with limited digital proficiency, immigrant English Language Learners (ELLs), and older adults aged 65 and above face challenges accessing these resources, leading to potential exclusion.
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the shift to online interactions and services due to lockdown measures, reducing face-to-face interactions. This sudden transition left individuals without digital skills unable to access healthcare, essential services, and maintain connections with their support networks. Addressing this issue presents an opportunity to promote inclusivity, empowerment, and community engagement through targeted digital literacy training.
Digital literacy encompasses the ability to navigate technology such as …

Affordances Of Mobile Technology To Facilitate Learning In Undergraduate Thermal-Fluid Sciences, Maeve Raphael Bakic
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, the pandemic has affected learning at all levels, in particular higher education, where higher levels of independence and self-motivation are required during distance learning. In engineering in particular, distance learning adds another degree of difficulty to an already complex field. Comprehension in engineering requires the repeated use of diagrams, high-level charts, and practice problems. Mobile devices, combined with a technology-enhanced curriculum, provide an excellent platform for learning in engineering as it allows for clear illustration and the transfer of complex ideas at any time and place. In alignment with the social-constructivist framework, these facets of mobile technology …
Tech Support Workshops For Seniors: Bridging The Digital Divide, Ana Huerta
Tech Support Workshops For Seniors: Bridging The Digital Divide, Ana Huerta
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Unequal access to technology for seniors makes already-existing inequalities worse by preventing seniors from taking advantage of opportunities. A key element of Loaves, Fishes & Computers program is the digital literacy department, which assists seniors in overcoming any technological barriers. Seniors can get one-on-one help with any questions they may have about any technology device they possess. Additionally, they collaborate with other organizations to offer tools that might support the well-being of elders. For example, low-cost wifi resources. By offering workshops tailored to the needs of seniors, my project aims to contribute to ending the digital divide. I researched various …

Defragging Feminist Cyberlaw, Amanda Levendowski
Defragging Feminist Cyberlaw, Amanda Levendowski
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
In 1996, Judge Frank Easterbrook famously observed that any effort to create a field called cyberlaw would be “doomed to be shallow and miss unifying principles.” He was wrong, but not for the reason other scholars have stated. Feminism is a unifying principle of cyberlaw, which alternately amplifies and abridges the feminist values of consent, safety, and accessibility. Cyberlaw simply hasn’t been understood that way—until now.
In computer science, “defragging” means bringing together disparate pieces of data so they are easier to access. Inspired by that process, this Article offers a new approach to cyberlaw that illustrates how feminist values …

As Black youth face race-related stress from personal and vicarious experiences with police, practices advancing youth’s coping self-efficacy and agency are needed. We describe the pilot of a program supporting Black adolescents in creating virtual narratives detailing encounters and resolutions with police and offer preliminary observations of how this program could facilitate racial coping and emotional support. The program included four weeks consisting of both curriculum-based instruction and hands-on activities, four weeks solely focused on designing and developing students’ projects, and one week devoted to students’ final project presentations and peer feedback. We utilized a participatory design to co-create narratives …
Deplatforming, Ganesh Sitaraman
Deplatforming, Ganesh Sitaraman
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Deplatforming in the technology sector is hotly debated, and at times may even seem unprecedented. In recent years, scholars, commentators, jurists, and lawmakers have focused on the possibility of treating social-media platforms as common carriers or public utilities, implying that the imposition of a duty to serve the public would restrict them from deplatforming individuals and content.
But, in American law, the duty to serve all comers was never absolute. In fact, the question of whether and how to deplatform-—to exclude content, individuals, or businesses from critical services—- has been commonly and regularly debated throughout American history. In the common …
For Freedom Or Full Of It? State Attempts To Silence Social Media, Grace Slicklen
For Freedom Or Full Of It? State Attempts To Silence Social Media, Grace Slicklen
University of Miami Law Review
Freedom of speech is, unsurprisingly, foundational to the “land of the free.” However, the “land of the free” has undergone some changes since the First Amendment’s ratification. Unprecedented technological evolution has ushered in a digital forum in which the volume, speed, and reach of words transcend the Framers’ visions of the First Amendment’s aims. Social media platforms have become central spaces for public discourse, where opportunities to create—and repress—speech are endless. From enabling individuals to freely express their views, to allowing state actors to limit open exchanges, it is about time that the Supreme Court tackles this complex issue of …

Ohio's Data Protection Act And/As A Process-Based Approach To "Reasonable" Security, Brian Ray
Ohio's Data Protection Act And/As A Process-Based Approach To "Reasonable" Security, Brian Ray
Akron Law Review
This essay argues that the ODPA [Ohio Data Protection Act], which has become a model for similar laws and legislative proposals in several other states, in effect creates a process-based standard for cybersecurity. It does so by incorporating the risk-based approach used by the listed cybersecurity frameworks as the defacto standard for reasonable security for organizations seeking to qualify for the Act’s affirmative defense. This article summarizes the ODPA and then explains the risk-based approach of the cybersecurity frameworks it incorporates. It then argues that this risk-based approach in effect establishes a process-based definition of reasonable security and explains why …

Security In The Digital Age, Michael Gentithes
Akron Law Review
Rapidly evolving technology allows governments and businesses to elevate our collective well-being in ways we could not have imagined just decades ago. Data is now a resource that governments and businesses alike can mine to address the world’s needs with greater efficiency, accuracy, and flexibility. But evolving technology and advanced data analytics also come with risk. New digital capabilities also create new means for nefarious actors to infiltrate the complex technological systems at the heart of nearly all of our daily activities. Just as new digital tools emerge to offer unique goods and services, new tools allow wrongdoers to invade …

Live To Think, Death By Tech: A Philosophical Analysis Against Modern Technological Society, Jacob Jimenez
Live To Think, Death By Tech: A Philosophical Analysis Against Modern Technological Society, Jacob Jimenez
Honors Theses
This thesis first argues that modern technological society (MTS) is moral-ethically harmful to its inhabitants. Through an analysis of works on the subject, two philosophical harms having to do with Being are presented. It is then shown how these harms are consequences of some of MTS’ most prominent technologies and their methods of implementation. Since these harms are moral-ethically dangerous, and the technologies that best perpetuate them are integral to the identity of MTS, the thesis finds MTS to be moral-ethically dangerous as well. Following these findings, the thesis touches on the few prominent solutions to MTS put forth in …

Training Is Everything: Artificial Intelligence, Copyright, And “Fair Training”, Andrew W. Torrance, Bill Tomlinson
Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)
In this Essay, we analyze the arguments in favor of, and against, viewing the use of copyrighted works in training sets for AI as fair use. We call this form of fair use “fair training.” We identify both strong and spurious arguments on both sides of this debate. In addition, we attempt to take a broader perspective, weighing the societal costs (e.g., replacement of certain forms of human employment) and benefits (e.g., the possibility of novel AI-based approaches to global issues such as environmental disruption) of allowing AI to make easy use of copyrighted works as training sets to facilitate …
Place-Based Environmental Education Towards Collective Environmental Literacy, Nicole Stubbs
Place-Based Environmental Education Towards Collective Environmental Literacy, Nicole Stubbs
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
As environmental issues and environmental injustices persist, it is even more important for environmental educators to foster in individuals and groups the skills, knowledge, and natural appreciation needed to timely address these issues. Place-focused environmental education that seeks to address an individual’s sense of place can deepen an individual's connection with their local environment and community. A developed sense of place within a group can also pave the way for collective environmental literacy, the literacy held by a community and defined by the characteristics of collective action, collaboration, shared knowledge, and diverse perspectives. This capstone seeks to answer the question: …

Theses and Dissertations
Safe and reliable operation of power plants and power transmission are critical to economy and society. Cables in power generation and transmission are subject to various thermal, chemical, and mechanical stresses, which generally lead to aging and degradation of cable insulation. It is reported that some cables with a projected lifetime of 40 years need to be replaced in 10-15 years. Poorly maintained aged cables can adversely affect power delivery and lead to catastrophic events, such as blackout, fires, and loss of lives. The current research on cable is mainly focused on the detection and localization of hard faults, which …
