The Consumer Bundle, Shelly Kreiczer-Levy Mar 2024

The Consumer Bundle, Shelly Kreiczer-Levy

Washington Law Review

Can property law have a consumer protection purpose? One of the most important consumer law concerns today is the limited control consumers have over the digital assets and software-embedded products they purchase. Current proposals for reform focus on classifying the transaction as either license or sale and rely mostly on contract law and consumer protection regulation with a few calls for restoring ownership rights. This Article argues that property law can protect consumers by establishing a minimum bundle of rights for consumers: the “consumer’s bundle.” Working with property theory and an analysis of property values, this Article explains the importance …

The Shifting Landscape Of Adolescent Wellness In Boarding Schools: Can Time Spent Off Screens And Outdoors Improve Adolescent Wellbeing?, Kristen H. Peterson Jan 2024

The Shifting Landscape Of Adolescent Wellness In Boarding Schools: Can Time Spent Off Screens And Outdoors Improve Adolescent Wellbeing?, Kristen H. Peterson

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

For nearly twenty years I have worked directly with adolescents as an independent school educator. Whether in the classroom, on the field, or in the dorm, I have observed and supported students through their middle and high school experiences. During this time, I have witnessed an alarming shift in adolescent physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. Concurrently, I have observed a dramatic increase in the amount of time students spend using screen-based devices, and a decrease in their time spent outdoors.

Using research to ground my anecdotal accounts in empirical understanding, my thesis examines whether or not screen use might help …

This article discusses three perspectives on these issues, placing them within the larger conversation of the LIS field. Dr. Norman Mooradian lays the groundwork for a paradigm shift by exploring the intersection of knowledge and ethics in a knowledge economy. Boheme Morris delves into the complexities of inequality within the high-tech knowledge …

Preparing Pakistan For Meeting The Challenges Of The 21st Century, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

The three decades 1990-2020 ( despite the set backs of the Global financial crisis of 2009 and the pandemic of 2019) have resulted in remarkable gains for the Emerging and Developing Countries (EDCs). The hollowing out of the Soviet economy followed by the disintegration of the Soviet Union itself gave impetus to the trend of Deregulation, Privatization and Liberalization which was being followed by Japan, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan .This trend was then emulated by the larger East Asian countries of Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand the Philippines. The major and unprecedented break through came when China, the most populous …

Using Poetics and Technology to Inform Pre-Service Educators’ Transformative Pedagogy via Innovative Sociocultural Interactivities

During the HICE workshop my colleague and I will demonstrate and engage HICE participants through learner centered practices we developed and studied during the Covid pandemic. We embedded oral and written poetic expression with a variety of technological practices to offer pre-service educators creative opportunities to learn and participate in the course through unique expressive movements, music, and media during on-line instruction. These approaches will show how to create a culture of care and Social Justice in a synchronous online classroom.

Don't Fear The Reaper? How Generative Artificial Intelligence Is Changing The Landscape Of Posthumous Communication Technology, Samuel Hoy Brown Vii

American University Law Review

Death and life. Yin and yang. The beginning and the end. But what if the end was only the beginning for those we leave behind?

Advancements in generative artificial intelligence technology have paved the way for “real” conversations with the people we really love. Companies across the globe are tapping into the $100 billion posthumous communication industry through the development of algorithms, chatbots, and in some instances, fully immersive virtual reality experiences with those no longer with us. As our society grapples with understanding the implications of artificial intelligence both generally and in the bereavement process, what may be seen …

New Tech, Old Problem: The Rise Of Virtual Rent-To-Own Agreements, Carrie Floyd Jan 2024

New Tech, Old Problem: The Rise Of Virtual Rent-To-Own Agreements, Carrie Floyd

Fellow, Adjunct, Lecturer, and Research Scholar Works

This Article explores how fintech has disrupted the traditional rent-to-own (RTO) industry, giving rise to new, virtual RTO agreements (VirTOs). These VirTOs have enabled the RTO industry to expand into the service industry and to markets for products not traditionally associated with rentals, such as vehicle repairs, pet ownership, and medical devices. This Article analyzes this development.

RTO agreements purport to rent products to a consumer until the conclusion of a set number of renewable rental payments, at which point ownership transfers. The fundamental characteristic of these agreements – and why they are not regulated as loans – are that …

Decoding Job Market Trends: Chatgpt’S Influence On Soft And Hard Skill Demands, Larkin Barnard-Bahn

Scripps Senior Theses

As the abilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI) grow, automation anxiety (the fear of being replaced by technology) has plagued the workforce—especially after the launch of the advanced Generative AI tool ChatGPT. To avoid structural unemployment, workers may need to invest in developing skills not easily replaced by AI. Some scholars argue that AI is less able to replicate soft skills than hard skills, but the literature lacks studies that indicate a causal effect across industries and occupations. This paper investigates how the public release of ChatGPT has influenced the demand for soft skills relative to hard skills in the U.S. …

Implementation Of Technological Innovations: An Identification And Examination Of Opinion Leaders And Advice Networks In Primary Care, Alan Kunz Lomelin

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

Technological innovations, such as artificial intelligence, have the potential to mitigate health disparities in healthcare, but lower uptake of these innovations in low resource healthcare settings, due to limited resources and staff shortages, may lead to missed opportunities. However, low-cost implementation strategies may facilitate the uptake of these innovations and increase their accessibility and adoption in this setting. The Network Model of Diffusion of Innovations suggests the identification of opinion leaders and the study of advice networks as strategies that may help enhance the uptake of innovations. Specifically, this framework suggests the use of a sociometric or network approach to …

The decision to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) has far reaching consequences. Determining how to address budding applications of AI technology should depend on their effects. This article describes how regulation should be carefully tailored to avoid harm while maximizing social welfare, building on Orly Lobel's taxonomy of regulatory tools. Part I examines the foundational difficulties in governing AI, including industry influence in regulation and deficiencies in enforcement. Part II elaborates on Lobel's framework, detailing the benefits and limitations of a variety of tools, such as voluntary standards, soft law mechanisms, and public-private partnerships. Differences In Student-Ai Interaction Process On A Drawing Task: Focusing On Students' Attitude Towards Ai And The Level Of Drawing Skills, Jinhee Kim, Yoonhee Ham, Sang-Soog Lee

STEMPS Faculty Publications

Recent advances and applications of artificial intelligence (AI) have increased the opportunities for students to interact with AI in their learning tasks. Although various fields of scholarly research have investigated human-AI collaboration, the underlying processes of how students collaborate with AI in a student-AI teaming scenario have been scarcely investigated. To develop effective AI applications in education, it is necessary to understand differences in the student-AI interaction (SAI) process depending on students' characteristics. The present study attempts to fill this gap by exploring the differences in the SAI process amongst students with varying drawing proficiencies and attitudes towards AI in …
