Technology: Its Influence In The Secondary School Upon Achievement In Academic Subjects And Upon Students' Attitude Toward Technology, Dan L. Householder, Barbara Bolin Jan 1993

Technology: Its Influence In The Secondary School Upon Achievement In Academic Subjects And Upon Students' Attitude Toward Technology, Dan L. Householder, Barbara Bolin

Engineering Education Faculty Publications

Many programs in the United States have undertaken to show the benefits to students of integrating academic disciplines. The TEC-Lab project, however, is unique among them because of its innovative approach. First, the TEC-Lab students are in senior high school, grades 9 to 12, while most innovative efforts are concentrated at the elementary and middle school levels. Second, the TEC-Lab approach uses technology as a means of meeting the usual academic requirements, rather than attempting to integrate the other academic areas into technology. The difference between these two approaches is subtle but profound. The first semester of the project was …

Technology In The Classroom, Sarah Elizabeth Praneis

Honors Capstones

Instructional technology can be extremely beneficial in teaching science and other subject .areas in the elementary classroom. Instructional technology is the new approach to teaching in which the student learns how to access information and apply that information to other areas. A workshop taught by Dr. Thomas Thompson dealt with the use of the laserdisc and laserdisc player as well as the barcode programs and their implementation in the classroom. The barcodes can be individualized to a teacher's instructional purposes and can also be used as a presentational method for lectures or student presentations. One science instruction program studied in …

Shifting Reality, Nancy Crosby May 1992

Shifting Reality, Nancy Crosby

Theses

Let me begin by saying, I have been raised Catholic, and all of my life I have been influenced strongly by my beliefs. Because of my devotion to my faith, I have been bombarded by fantastic iconography and images which seem to proclaim the presence of not only an omnipotent being who reigns over all of mankind, but also, the existence of another realm or realms beyond this insignificant way station known as earth. Throughout the continual passing of time, humanity has vigorously tried to give face to the invisible manipulators who seem to influence their thoughts and actions. On …

"Who Is A Scientist?": Effects Of An Intervention To Change Students' Ideas About Science And Scientists, Lauren A. Foley May 1992

"Who Is A Scientist?": Effects Of An Intervention To Change Students' Ideas About Science And Scientists, Lauren A. Foley

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Advocates for improving science literacy have focused much attention on the negative impressions about science and scientists held by many Americans. The image of scientists as 'nerdy' bespectacled men in laboratories has been related by some researchers to people's lack of interest in pursuing science. This thesis analyzes one component of a program aimed at changing that stereotype. The Science-By-Mail (tm) program at the Museum of Science in Boston was designed to give students a more inclusive image of scientists. Central to the program was the creation of pen-pal relationships between students in grades 4-9 with scientists who did not …

Legal Responses To Commercial Transactions Employing Novel Communications Media, John Robinson Thomas Mar 1992

Legal Responses To Commercial Transactions Employing Novel Communications Media, John Robinson Thomas

Michigan Law Review

This Note analyzes contemporary business practices and specific characteristics of the new media, and suggests a judicial response consonant with courts' approaches to the earlier technologies of telegraphy and teletype. Part I examines the effect of the Statute of Frauds and rules of authentication upon contracts formed using these media. It concludes that documents produced by telefacsimile and electronic mail systems should be considered ordinary writings. Part II considers the Best Evidence Rule and argues that telefacsimiles and electronic mail transmissions should be considered the best evidence of the contract they memorialize. Part III evaluates doctrines of liability allocation in …

Nothing Recedes Like Success - Risk Analysis And The Organizational Amplification Of Risks, William R. Freudenburg Jan 1992

Nothing Recedes Like Success - Risk Analysis And The Organizational Amplification Of Risks, William R. Freudenburg

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Professor Freudenburg believes that there is room for improvement in Risk analysis, particularly in drawing on systematic studies of human behavior in the calculation of real, empirical probabilities of failure. The need is argued to be especially acute where technological Risks are associated with low expected probabilities of failure and are managed by human organizations for extended periods of time. This permits complacency to set in.
