Disconnected Connection, Dyane O'Leary
Disconnected Connection, Dyane O'Leary
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
Lawyers are more digitally connected than ever, but the human side of connection is shifting. In a profession built on relationships, technological transformations from videoconferencing to Generative AI reshape how lawyers converse, empathize, and build rapport. Amid industry calls to prioritize ‘soft’ people skills, lawyers face a growing paradox: tools offering convenience and efficiency disrupt traditional methods of on-the-job training and mentorship from generations past. This Article draws on lessons from an empirical, interview-based study of law students, professional development legal personnel, and senior lawyers to examine interpersonal connection as a modern lawyering skill. Against a backdrop of swirling influences …
Continuing Discrimination In The Times Of Technology: Women, Work, Algorithms And Law In India, Sejal Chandak Ms
Continuing Discrimination In The Times Of Technology: Women, Work, Algorithms And Law In India, Sejal Chandak Ms
Indian Journal of Law and Technology
Human societies are discriminatory. So, it has been an unrelenting effort to eliminate what divides us. While there have been leapfrog developments in this regard, we need to consider newer challenges now that technology is taking over public and private spaces. The author, in this article, discusses gender-based algorithmic discrimination in workplaces and argues that there is an urgent need to enforce laws for regulating algorithmic discrimination. India is in a precarious position. It has been consistently faring poorly when it comes to the gender gap in work. It lacks a comprehensive and codified anti-discriminatory law; and lacks laws to …
Conservation Of The Ancient Boat From The Sea Of Galilee, Orna Cohen
Conservation Of The Ancient Boat From The Sea Of Galilee, Orna Cohen
'Atiqot
The Galilee or Kinneret Boat, also dubbed “Jesus’ Boat,” was found and excavated in 1986. The various degrees of deterioration of the wood, the wood species and the size of the vessel were factors that reflected on the choice of the conservation method. Iron elements, such as nails, were also treated, and biological and bacterial problems were addressed. This report describes the chemical process of the conservation treatment of the wood and iron nails; the overcoming of biological and bacterial problems; and additional technical aspects of the conservation process. The report also describes the stages of preparation of the boat …

Gotta Take My Avatar Shopping: Impacts Of Interactive Virtual Shopping In Esport, Yongjin Hwang, Keshav Gupta
Faculty Publications
Purpose
Esports game developers are incorporating interactive virtual shopping (IVS) experiences into their products to facilitate consumer–brand interactions. Despite the potential influence of IVS, existing research lacks an understanding of its impact on consumers’ overall affect– particularly game enjoyment, a critical factor in sustaining engagement with esports products – and on attitudinal change toward brands in the real world.
Design/methodology/approach
An experiment was designed to examine the impact of shopping in the virtually interactive esports marketplace on game enjoyment. Mediating effects of positive change in brand attitude, perceived realism and character attachment and the moderating effect of self-avatar gender congruity …

Teachers Perception Of Student Engagement Using Face-To-Face And Remote Instructional Methods, Anika Mcintosh
Teachers Perception Of Student Engagement Using Face-To-Face And Remote Instructional Methods, Anika Mcintosh
Theses and Dissertations
This phenomenology examines the instructional practices of high school teachers and the changes the challenges of remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic have wrought, with a focus on strategies to promote student engagement. The more students are engaged, the more they may see the relevance of their experiences, feel connected to their school experiences, and develop more positive attitudes and attributes, both inside and outside of the school walls (Bridgeland, Dilulio, & Morison, 2006). Six big themes emerged through qualitative analysis were instructional strategies, adaptation to online learning, teaching practices post 2020, perceptions of the teachers, teacher-student relationships, and barriers …

Fintech And Techno-Solutionism, Hilary J. Allen
Fintech And Techno-Solutionism, Hilary J. Allen
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
Silicon Valley-style technological innovation is ill-suited to addressing complex problems like financial inclusion, concentrated market power, and privacy harms, yet promises abound that “fintech” can fix them. This oversimplified reduction of complex structural problems into technological puzzles is known as “techno-solutionism,” and it poses real dangers for public policy. When we start with the tech industry’s favored tools and then ask how to solve complex problems using those tools – rather than starting by defining the problem to be solved – it can distract policymakers from supporting real, structural solutions. Techno-solutionism can also deter policymakers from interrogating the limitations, and …
Locating Consumer Financial Regulation, Nikita Aggarwal
Locating Consumer Financial Regulation, Nikita Aggarwal
Articles
Recent advances in data-driven technology in consumer financial markets, commonly referred to as "fintech," have resurfaced the question of whether and to what extent data, particularly consumers' personal data, should be a locus for regulatory intervention in these markets. While innovation in fintech and the accompanying increase in the processing of personal data offer to improve the functioning of consumer financial markets, like all advances in technology, they also come with costs and risks. In 2024, in a move that favored the regulation of personal financial data per se and many of the traditional features of personal data protection regulation, …

Why Ai Monitoring Faces Resistance And What Healthcare Organizations Can Do About It: An Emotion-Based Perspective, Karl Werder, Lan Cao, Eun Hee Park, Balasubramaniam Ramesh
Why Ai Monitoring Faces Resistance And What Healthcare Organizations Can Do About It: An Emotion-Based Perspective, Karl Werder, Lan Cao, Eun Hee Park, Balasubramaniam Ramesh
Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications
Continuous monitoring of patients' health facilitated by artificial intelligence (AI) has enhanced the quality of health care, that is, the ability to access effective care. However, AI monitoring often encounters resistance to adoption by decision makers. Healthcare organizations frequently assume that the resistance stems from patients' rational evaluation of the technology's costs and benefits. Recent research challenges this assumption and suggests that the resistance to AI monitoring is influenced by the emotional experiences of patients and their surrogate decision makers. We develop a framework from an emotional perspective, provide important implications for healthcare organizations, and offer recommendations to help reduce …

Comparing Esg Reporting And Market Dynamics In The Technology And Consumer Industries: Analyzing Investor Reactions And Understanding The Future Of Corporate Reporting, Sophia Nguyen
CMC Senior Theses
The increasing emphasis on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting has sparked debate about its influence on market reactions and corporate transparency. This thesis investigates the impact of ESG disclosures on investor behavior and market dynamics within the technology industry specifically, focusing on the correlation between ESG performance and stock price volatility, as well as other financial ratios. This relationship will be compared to those of various companies within the consumer business industry, to determine whether investors have the same reactions towards consumer business companies compared to consumer-facing technology companies and other technology companies. Additionally, the study explores whether investors …
The Danger Of Deepfakes: Information Pollution And Epistemic Insecurity, Camille Doherty
The Danger Of Deepfakes: Information Pollution And Epistemic Insecurity, Camille Doherty
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis examines the dangers of deepfakes to democratic stability, emphasizing their capacity to pollute our information ecosystem and undermine trust in media. Beyond the immediate political harms from deepfake incidents, deepfakes are troubling for their impact on our collective relationship to media, truth, and one another. As exposure to deepfakes becomes more common, discerning fact from fiction will become increasingly difficult. Over time, this could foster widespread skepticism of all media and, worse, apathy toward truth itself. With eroded trust and shared truths, democracies risk losing epistemic security – the foundation for informed deliberation, decision-making, and accountability in democratic …

The Impact Of Technology And Social Media On The Expansion Of Mexican Cartels' Power, Salvador Leon
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis examines how Mexican cartels, particularly the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel, use technology and social media to expand their operations and influence. As these cartels evolve into more sophisticated criminal organizations, they leverage tools like encrypted messaging, drones, and social media to enhance recruitment, surveillance, intimidation, and propaganda. Through an analysis of news articles, government reports, social media content, and academic studies, the research focuses on two key areas: digital media manipulation and military-grade technology. The findings show that social media has become a powerful tool for cartels to assert dominance and instill fear, …

Two Paths, One Paris Agreement: Global South Development And Diplomacy In A Changing Climate, My Fu
CMC Senior Theses
Climate action, development, and technology have grown intertwined in the international struggle against climate change. When the Paris Agreement was developed in 2015, it bridged these commitments together and encouraged the international community to collaborate in reducing global temperatures. Historically, international agreements have excluded Global South countries from benefits when it was implemented. Is the Paris Agreement the same? How effective has the Paris Agreement been in fostering the international community to support Global South countries in their economic, technological, and sustainable development? By assessing the cases of Bhutan and Kenya, the answer to this question appears to be complex. …
Katz'S Imperfect Circle: An Empirical Study Of Reasonable Expectations Of Privacy, Tonja Jacobi, Christopher Brett Jaeger
Katz'S Imperfect Circle: An Empirical Study Of Reasonable Expectations Of Privacy, Tonja Jacobi, Christopher Brett Jaeger
Faculty Articles
Under Katz v. United States, the Fourth Amendment restricts government actions that infringe upon expectations of privacy that society recognizes as reasonable. This foundational test has long been criticized as circular, both because courts can shape the very expectations they seek to identify through their decisions and because governments can manipulate those expectations to expand the reach of their own power. But how do members of society decide what expectations are reasonable, and how do judges ascertain those expectations? And are expectations of privacy malleable even without deliberate manipulation?
This Article shows that the circularity critique is both understated …

In her important book, Unwired: Gaining Control Over Addictive Technologies, Gaia Bernstein illustrates the value of a comparative approach, drawing lessons from fights around the regulation of tobacco and ultra-processed food for the regulation of social media. Building on Bernstein’s work, this symposium contribution aims to draw additional insight from experience with drug and gambling regulation for the regulation of social media, video games, AI, and other potentially-addictive technologies.
Specifically, after introducing Bernstein’s book and the foundation it lays, we draw six lessons from the study of psychoactive drugs and gambling. As we elaborate below: Lesson one is that …

How Ai Reinforces Caste: Creating And Amplifying Systematic Inequality, Catherine Powell
How Ai Reinforces Caste: Creating And Amplifying Systematic Inequality, Catherine Powell
Faculty Scholarship
In arguing that artificial intelligence (“AI”) creates, reinscribes, and amplifies caste, this Article asserts that algorithmic discrimination is not just a bug, it is an essential feature of the system that powers the digital economy. Because this economy traffics in our information and is monetized through targeted advertising, it depends on knowing our race, gender, and other protected characteristics (i.e., our caste). Given that the digital economy is inherently an information economy, it is driven by population-wide demographics and predictions, which algorithms can process and commodify at scale. As such, digital surveillance can lead not only to individual harm, but …

Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study investigated how organizations utilize internal communication strategies to navigate AI-driven change effectively. Through semi-structured interviews with eleven communication professionals and change leaders across various industries, the research identified key communication approaches that facilitate successful AI implementation. Findings revealed three primary strategies: framing AI as a tool that enhances rather than replaces human capabilities, connecting AI initiatives to organizational purpose and business goals, and demonstrating practical use cases through concrete examples. The study also highlighted the importance of establishing clear guidelines for responsible AI use, making initial adoption optional rather than mandatory, and directly addressing job security concerns. …

“Digital Integrity”: Defending The Judicial Integrity In The Digital Age, Guy Alon, Doron Menashe, Guy Itzhak Sender
Touro Law Review
Recent revelations have shown that the protection of the Fourth Amendment in the digital age is inadequate. Despite well-known exclusionary rules regarding evidence obtained by illegal search and seizure, current trends in the digital age and the law of evidence resulted in courts that tend to include such evidence, and by doing so, create significant risk of both substantive and procedural errors and hence increase the potential for wrongful convictions. To address the matter and try to empower and modernize the protection given by the Fourth Amendment, this article suggests performing a revolution in the law of evidence in the …
