Participant Reactions To Two-Way Immersion (Twi) Programs, Brett Frayseth, Carrie Lewis Miller, James Livermont, Melissa Siebke

IT Solutions Publications

The purpose of this study was to elicit participant reactions to two-way immersion (TWI) programs in the United States of America. A large number of recent studies have focused on instructor views and perspectives of two-way immersion programs, so this study aimed to gain insight from students who are, or who have, participated in TWI programs throughout North America.

One hundred fifty-one TWI schools throughout the United States were contacted and asked to participate in this study. Two similar surveys were developed, one for current TWI students, and another for former TWI students. Students from these two groups were asked …

Characteristics Of Social Smoking Among College Students, Kimberly Waters, Kari J. Harris, Sandra Hall, Niaman Nazir, Alex Waigandt

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Social smoking is a newly identified phenomenon in the young adult population that is poorly understood. We investigated differences in social smoking (smoking most commonly while partying or socializing) and other smoking within a convenience sample of college smokers (n = 351) from a large midwestern university. Results revealed that 70% of 351 current (past 30-day) smokers reported social smoking. No significant difference was found in motivation to quit between smoking groups. However, a significant difference was found between groups in confidence to quit, the number of days smoked, and the number of cigarettes smoked on those days. More …

Miranda, Please Report To The Principal's Office, Meg Penrose Jan 2006

Miranda, Please Report To The Principal's Office, Meg Penrose

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Article addresses whether Miranda v. Arizona should apply to students interrogated by school officials during school hours. First, the article provides a brief overview of the law of minors and confessions. Next, it considers the increasing law enforcement presence on our school campuses and evaluates how this presence affects the role of school officials. Finally, the high level of cooperation between law enforcement and school officials in criminal law enforcement is considered to determine whether Miranda should apply in the principal's office.

Theory In Practice : Archaeology Field School In Sicily, Julie Edmunds Jan 2006

Theory In Practice : Archaeology Field School In Sicily, Julie Edmunds

Honors Capstones

Essentially an examination of Archaeological Theory, this study seeks to illuminate four of the various theoretical approaches to archaeology: Processual, Behavioral, Structuralism, and Marxism. These approaches are evaluated for practical application through student participation in the Sicilian Archaeological Research Project in Salemi Sicily. Students were asked to complete questionnaires to determine the faults and merits of each theory. The students’ perspectives and understanding on Archaeological theory change with the incorporation of hands-on research techniques, resulting in a measured transitional period that can be used to aide in theory understanding for students that may not have the opportunity to study abroad. …
