Incorporating Art Into Education : The Importance Of Teaching Creatively In A Standards Based Classroom, Monica Petersen Jan 2007

Incorporating Art Into Education : The Importance Of Teaching Creatively In A Standards Based Classroom, Monica Petersen

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Art education is an important aspect of overall learning and schools are failing to provide adequate art education programs for students. Eighty-nine percent of Americans believe that art education is important enough to be taught in schools, and still, art education is being allowed to slip out the backdoor without anyone asking why (National Arts Education, 2007). If teachers could incorporate art into the current curriculum, students would benefit and art could be used as a valuable teaching tool. An art resource packet was created for teachers in response to the interviews conducted. The resource packet contains information on how …

Cognitive Processes Of Students Solving Technical Problems, Todd Kelley, Roger Hill Jan 2007

Cognitive Processes Of Students Solving Technical Problems, Todd Kelley, Roger Hill

Reports of Center Studies

The purpose of this study was to better understand cognitive strategies used by high school technology education students who have participated in technology education instruction with an engineering design focus. Specifically, this study evaluated the cognitive strategies of students participating in Project Lead the Way curriculum programs compared with students participating in technology education programs partnering with the National Center for Engineering and Technology Education (NCETE). High school students from these two groups were studied as they worked through an ill-defined problem: moving drinking water in developing countries. The data collected from these protocols was analyzed using a coding process …

Mindfulness, Stress And Coping Styles Among University Students, Angèle Palmer

Digitized Theses

A sample of 135 first-year university students living in residence completed questionnaires that measure individual differences in mindfulness (the Mindfulness Attention and Awareness Scale [MAAS]; Brown & Ryan, 2003), coping styles (adaptive detached coping and rational coping, or maladaptive: emotional coping and avoidant coping) (Coping Styles Questionnaire [CSQ]; Roger, et al., 1993), perceived stress (Perceived Stress Scale [PSS]; Cohen, Kamarck, & Mermelstein, 1983), and drinking behaviour. Findings revealed significant positive relationships between mindfulness and adaptive coping (rational and detached coping), and significant negative relationships with maladaptive coping (emotional and avoidant coping) and perceived stress. Mathematics-For-Teachers (And Students), George Gadanidis, Immaculate Kizito Namukasa Jan 2007

Mathematics-For-Teachers (And Students), George Gadanidis, Immaculate Kizito Namukasa

Education Publications

What mathematics do elementary teachers need and how might such mathematics be provided in a teacher education program? In this paper we discuss the development of a mathematics-for-teachers component for our elementary (K-8) preservice education program. Our mathematics-for-teachers program has evolved from an elective course for 20 preservice teachers, to 440 preservice teachers working in small groups in an auditorium setting, to a fully online component. The mathematics-for-teachers component immerses preservice teachers in mathematics experiences that many of them have never had, namely, experiences where they attend deeply to mathematical relationships and have opportunities to sense the pleasure of mathematical …

Book Chapters

The Federal Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which provides funding for state educational programming, requires that student records be disclosed to a nonparent only with the written consent of the child’s parent, unless the disclosure falls within one of the several exceptions detailed in the statute. One of the exemptions provided for in the federal law permits a school to disclose information to “state or local officials or authorities to whom [that] information is allowed to be reported or disclosed pursuant to state statute,” if that official certifies in writing “that the information will not be disclosed to …

Enhancing Student Learning In Engineering Technology Programs? A Case For Physical Simulations, Alok Verma Jan 2007

Enhancing Student Learning In Engineering Technology Programs? A Case For Physical Simulations, Alok Verma

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Physical simulations have a proven record as a teaching tool. Concepts that are often hard to grasp are made easy by the use of physical simulation activities. The constructivism learning theory suggests that people learn better by actively participating in the process of learning. According to the Encyclopedia of Educational Technology, "Simulation-based learning involves the placement of a student into a realistic scenario or situation. The student is then responsible for any changes that occur as a result of their decisions." A number of physical simulation based tools have been developed by the author for use as instructional tools to …

The Bologna Process And Its Implications For U.S. Legal Education, Laurel S. Terry Jan 2007

The Bologna Process And Its Implications For U.S. Legal Education, Laurel S. Terry

Faculty Scholarly Works

Virtually all European countries are in the midst of a massive multi-year project intended to dramatically restructure higher education in Europe. This project, which is known as the Bologna Process or Sorbonne-Bologna, began less than ten years ago when four European Union (EU) countries signed a relatively vague agreement. The Bologna Process has now grown to forty-six countries, including all of the EU Member States and nineteen non-EU countries. The Bologna Process participants have agreed to form the European Higher Education Area or EHEA by 2010; among other goals, the EHEA is intended to help Europe better compete in the …

The Relationship Between The Basic Skills Proficiency Of Counselor Education Master's Level Students And Client Outcome, Lorie Welsh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A review of literature on the history of psychology and counseling revealed a limited amount of research on counselor education training programs, specifically basic skills versus client outcome. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between counselor educator student's basic skills and the effects these skills had on client outcome. By way of a multiple regression, two independent variables, the Global Scale for Rating Helper Responses (GSRR) and the Counselor Skills and Professional Behavior Scale (CSPBS) were analyzed in relation to the Outcome Questionnaire (OQ-45.2). Results indicated that there was no statistical significance between basic skills and …

Research outputs pre 2011

The original purpose of this study was to investigate youth needs, specifically in the south western region (the 'South West') of Western Australia, and then to explore how these needs might be addressed in terms of current curriculum and teaching practices. The following research questions guided our investigation:

- What do young people identify as influences on their educational and occupational aspirations and attainment?

As the data collection progressed, it was evident to all those involved that, whilst there were expressed needs, …

Producing Graduates With Essential Generic Skills: A Model For Teaching And Learning, Joseph Luca, Deanna Heal Jan 2007

Producing Graduates With Essential Generic Skills: A Model For Teaching And Learning, Joseph Luca, Deanna Heal

Research outputs pre 2011

Higher education institutions are under increasing pressure from government, industry and business organizations to equip students with required discipline based skills as well as generic skills. At the same time universities are experiencing cuts in resources and increased competition for student numbers. Within this environment, there is much uncertainty as to how to effectively prepare students for the university/industry nexus. This paper investigates the effectiveness of a teaching and learning model designed with the key aim of helping promote students' employability prospects. The model focuses on providing activities that identify, and help improve students' job-specific and generic skills. In this …
