Now a gracious supporter of Utah State University and member of the USU Board of Trustees, Suzanne Pierce-Moore suggests students ask a question to themselves she wishes she had asked at their age: “What would I do if I couldn’t fail?”

It’s not often that most people have the opportunity to argue with each other in front of a crowd of people and a panel of judges, but on Feb. 21, students from across the USU campus did just that.

Awareness And Beliefs Regarding Intimate Partner Violence Among First-Year Dental Students, Rhonda J. Everett, Karl Kingsley, Christina A. Demopoulos, Edward E. Herschaft, Christine Lamun, Sheniz Moonie, Timothy J. Bungum, Michelle Chino
Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research
Intimate partner violence (IPV) may affect one to four million individuals per year in the United States, with women accounting for the majority of both reported and unreported cases. Dental professionals are in a unique position to identify many types of IPV because injuries to the head and neck may be indicators or predictors of IPV abuse. Fewer than half of dental programs surveyed have reported having IPV-specific curricula, and most dental students surveyed have reported having little experience or training to recognize IPV. Based on this information, this pilot study sought to assess the awareness and beliefs regarding IPV …
School Adult And Student Perceptions Of Bullying In Middle School: A Mixed Methods Case Study, Michelle L. Barrows
School Adult And Student Perceptions Of Bullying In Middle School: A Mixed Methods Case Study, Michelle L. Barrows
Masters Theses
This mixed-methods case study examined the perceptions of students and school adults regarding bullying at one urban middle school (grades 6-8) in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Participants completed a two-part survey. Part one contained open-ended questions regarding the respondent’s experiences at the school and part two used a questionnaire from Maunder, Harrop and Tattersall, (2010) containing a set of twelve scenarios with questions asking participants to indicate whether or not it is bullying, the frequency seen in the school, and the severity if it happened to a girl or a boy. This study showed that awareness of the school district’s anti-bullying …

The Cost And Quality Of Open Textbooks: Perceptions Of Community College Faculty And Students, Tj Bliss, John Hilton Iii, David Wiley, Kim Thanos
Faculty Publications
Proponents of open educational resources (OER) claim that significant cost savings are possible when open textbooks displace traditional textbooks in the college classroom. We investigated student and faculty perceptions of OER used in a community college context. Over 125 students and 11 faculty from seven colleges responded to an online questionnaire about the cost and quality of the open textbooks used in their classrooms. Results showed that the majority of students and faculty had a positive experience using the open textbooks, appreciated the lower costs, and perceived the texts as being of high quality. The potential implications for OER initiatives …

Promoting A Culture Of Integrity: A Study Of Faculty And Student Perceptions Of Academic Dishonesty At A Large Public Midwestern University, Tanisha Nicole Stevens
Dissertations
Research reveals that reducing academic misconduct requires an understanding of factors that influence the two key stakeholders in the epidemic: students who engage in academically dishonest behaviors and faculty who are charged with the responsibility of reporting and deterring the behavior (e.g., Prenshaw, Straughan & Albers-Miller, 2000). In response, a body of research reveals that in order to alter the environment in which academic dishonesty occurs, an understanding of how individuals perceive dishonesty and its severity is of great importance (Roberts & Rabinowitz, 1992). Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to examine faculty perceptions and student perceptions of academic …
The Effect Of Self-Remediation Activities On Undergraduate Student Retention, Mark Ciampa, Mark Revels
The Effect Of Self-Remediation Activities On Undergraduate Student Retention, Mark Ciampa, Mark Revels
Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning
Student performance remediation is an ongoing issue in higher education due to the need for student retention. However, remediation is costly. For example, it is estimated the total annual cost of remedial courses across all types of higher education in 1998 was between one and two billion dollars. In the current financial environment, these additional costs will likely come under increased scrutiny. This study employed empirical research methods on undergraduate participants in order to explore the effect of student self-remediated learning as evidenced by pre- and posttest scores, and to provide research-based recommendations for educators charged with course delivery or …

Smoking Experimentation Among Elementary School Students In China: Influences From Peers, Families, And The School Environment, Cheng Huang, Jeffrey Koplan, Shaohua Yu, Changwei Li, Chaoran Guo, Jing Liu, Hui Li, Michelle Kegler, Pam Redmon, Michael Eriksen
Global Health Faculty Publications
The aim of this study was to investigate experimentation with smoking among primary school students in China. Data were acquired from a recent survey of 4,073 students in grades 4 to 6 (ages 9–12) in 11 primary schools of Ningbo City. The questions were adapted from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS). Results suggest that although the Chinese Ministry of Education (MOE) encourages smoke-free schools, experimentation with cigarettes remains a serious problem among primary school students in China. Peers, family members, and the school environment play important roles in influencing smoking experimentation among students. Having a friend who smoked, seeing …
