Language Therapy And Academic Achievement In Mathematics: Speech-Language Pathologists' Roles And Perspectives, Rachel Richter
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play an important role in language intervention among school-age children and have the potential to target academic achievement through language therapy. This study explored whether and how SLPs capitalize on language therapy to promote students’ math achievement and discussed SLPs’ practice addressing academic problems that co-occur with language disorders. Ten elementary school SLPs were interviewed to gather their perspectives on the relationship between language disorders and academic achievement. Results indicated that the SLPs acknowledged their responsibility to address academic difficulties and reported addressing academic difficulties presented by students in their caseload. Reading and writing were identified by …

Recruitment And Retention Of Rural Nursing Students: A Retrospective Study, J. Bigbee, D. Mixon
Recruitment And Retention Of Rural Nursing Students: A Retrospective Study, J. Bigbee, D. Mixon
Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations
Introduction: The shortage of registered nurses is an issue globally, but particularly in rural and remote areas. Previous research in medicine suggests that recruiting students from rural backgrounds is an effective strategy to enhance the supply of rural healthcare providers. This strategy has not been widely adopted or evaluated in nursing. The purpose of this study was to compare rural and urban nursing students in relation to application, admission, and retention/graduation trends at a metropolitan state university in the Pacific Northwest area of the USA.
Methods: A retrospective longitudinal descriptive design was used, analyzing existing data from 2005 to …

Student Motivational Methods In The Chinese Classroom, David Boren, Paul F. Cook
Student Motivational Methods In The Chinese Classroom, David Boren, Paul F. Cook
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Educators are constantly striving to improve and increase student motivation. The less time a teacher spends on motivation and management, the more time can be spent on teaching the subject matter. Behaviorism and constructivism are two theoretical positions on human motivation which can help explain student motivation in the classroom. Greatly simplified, Behaviorism takes the position that people naturally act and will continue to act in a certain way if their actions are followed by an external event that is reinforcing to them. Similarly, a behavior is less likely to occur if it is not reinforced by an external event …

Journal of Undergraduate Research
I met Dr. Espinito Romero at a clinical psychology conference held at Zion National Park in Southern Utah in March, 2004. He had traveled from Guadalajara, Mexico to this conference to present his poster on bowel irregularities in the lower intestine and their effects on mental health. I was attending the conference as a student of Dr. Michael Lambert and was giving a presentation on perfectionism and its possible inclusion on the Outcome Questionnaire-45 (OQ-45) as a measure of mental health.

A review of this access work to date as well as consultation with stakeholders, including second-level students and third-level access students, and an analysis of national and international research on access reveals a clear gap in relation to pre-entry work. This gap relates to the more subtle factors affecting participation in higher education for students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly in areas and schools with low levels of participation in higher education. Research shows that these factors include: issues associated with sense of identity and confidence:coping with transition and decision-making:gap between the culture of school and the culture of home …

Education In Rural Mexico: What Stops Students?, Jared A. Wilkerson, Dr. Harold Miller
Education In Rural Mexico: What Stops Students?, Jared A. Wilkerson, Dr. Harold Miller
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Providing regular education in rural Mexico has been a focus for the Mexican government for the last few decades. Even twenty years ago, many teachers were quite unwilling to visit rural areas, where the facilities and transportation were far under par. By the beginning of this decade, however, kindergarten and elementary schools had reached even the most remote parts of the country, with middle schools and high schools increasingly accessible to all potential students. Seeing the still-low rates of rural student matriculation, and especially noting the extremely low rates of male education, I wondered what inhibited youth from finishing, or …

Racial And Ethnic Diversity In Undergraduate Social Work Programs: How Are Programs In Rural Areas Faring?, David L. Beimers Ph.D., Brian Warner Msw, Paul Force-Emery Mackie Ph.D.
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
Social work programs have a long-standing commitment to recruiting and educating racially and ethnically diverse students. However, some programs in rural areas have greater difficulty meeting this commitment. This study examined racial and ethnic diversity within baccalaureate social work (BSW) programs, focusing primarily on student enrollment, faculty, perceptions of diversity, and interventions to attract students. Program directors of BSW programs from 10 Midwestern states were surveyed. Forty-two programs responded. The results indicate that as a whole, social work programs differ in their levels of racial and ethnic diversity. However, BSW programs in rural areas tend to have fewer students and …

Equivalence Of Students' Scores On Timed And Untimed Anatomy Practical Examinations., Guiyan Zhang, Bruce Fenderson, Richard R Schmidt, J J. Veloski
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Untimed examinations are popular with students because there is a perception that first impressions may be incorrect, and that difficult questions require more time for reflection. In this report, we tested the hypothesis that timed anatomy practical examinations are inherently more difficult than untimed examinations. Students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Thomas Jefferson University were assessed on their understanding of anatomic relationships using multiple-choice questions. For the class of 2012 (n = 46), students were allowed to circulate freely among 40 testing stations during the 40-minute testing session. For the class of 2013 (n = 46), students …
Use Of Participant-Generated Photography In A Research Contribution Course, Maryellen Thompson
Use Of Participant-Generated Photography In A Research Contribution Course, Maryellen Thompson
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
This paper describes the use of small, qualitative studies focused on interviews done with participant-generated photographs as an effective and efficient way of teaching research to entry-level masters students. A comparison of using time-use diaries vs. participant-generated photography is presented to explicate the research process and demonstrate the advantages of using photography, including ease of data collection and data sharing. Over a three-year period of using participant-generated photographs as a guide for semi-structured interviews, students have consistently expressed enjoyment of the research process and increased empathy with their research participants.

The body building of the masses will be viewed with an importance that increases daily, and the avenues for athletic pursuits will be available in increasing variety” (1). In the fourteenth article of the proclamation it is made clear that this plan is for all of China’s citizens including the disabled. The proclamation calls for the “pushing forth of body building activities for the …
