Patron Driven Programs: Successes And Lessons Learned From Turning The Library Over To Students For A Week, Mark Robison, Rachael Muszkiewicz

Library Faculty Presentations

While stress relief activities in academic libraries during finals weeks are nothing new, few libraries have experimented with turning the reins over to the students. Librarians at Valparaiso University initiated a two-round ideation and voting process for students to choose their own finals week programming. First, students were asked to generate ideas for the programs they wanted to see during finals week and to share them on whiteboards in the library lobby. Second, after the most prominent suggestions had been identified, students again used the whiteboards to vote for the top eight programs: four active and four passive.

Effect Of Learned Helplessness On Students, Alex Moll Jun 2016

Effect Of Learned Helplessness On Students, Alex Moll

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

This experiment was conducted in order to see if a relationship existed between learned helplessness and students. In other words, I sought to see if enforced learned helplessness would have a negative impact on student test performance. Learned helplessness can be defined as the belief that a task or an obstacle has an outcome that is outside an individual’s realm of control (Marshik, Kortenkamp, Cerbin et al., 2015). In order to test learned helplessness, anagrams were used. Anagrams may be defined as groups of letters that are scrambled, and then are attempted to be unscrambled in order to form words. …

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Undergraduate introductory biology courses are changing based on our growing understanding of how students learn and rapid scientific advancement in the biological sciences. At Iowa State University, faculty instructors are transforming a second-semester large-enrollment introductory biology course to include active learning within the lecture setting. To support this change, we set up a faculty learning community (FLC) in which instructors develop new pedagogies, adapt active-learning strategies to large courses, discuss challenges and progress, critique and revise classroom interventions, and share materials. We present data on how the collaborative work of the FLC led to increased implementation of active-learning strategies and …

A Reformed College Algebra Course: Understanding Instructors' And Students' Beliefs About Teaching And Learning Mathematics, Mary Williams

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

Reforms of undergraduate mathematics (e.g. Bressoud & Rasmussen, 2015; Laursen et. al, 2011) are changing the practice of teaching and learning within their courses. Prior research has established strong connections between practices and beliefs (Brickhouse, 1990; Raymond, 1997; Aguirre & Speer, 1999), therefore changing the practices within these courses may be affecting the beliefs of those tasked to enact the reformed practices. Thus, part of the work of the reforms in undergraduate mathematics is to learn how and why these beliefs may or may not be changing in this culture of reform.

In this qualitative case study, I analyzed the …

Financial Wellness And Undergraduate Students, Kristin N. O'Donovan May 2016

Financial Wellness And Undergraduate Students, Kristin N. O'Donovan

BU Well

Liberal Arts Universities often include a core curriculum with the education provided to students. This core curriculum includes a variety of topics, separate from a student’s major, aimed at delivering a well-rounded education. However, one major topic seems to be missing from the core curriculum of many universities across the country: finance. Not only does this have implications to the financial wellness of undergraduate students, but the overall wellness of students as well. Undergraduate students face an increasingly difficult financial landscape with unique needs, and the financial decisions they make may have repercussions years or decades into their futures. Based …
