Mobilization And Repression In The Occupy Movement, Eric Turner

Sociology ETDs

This dissertation project focuses on dynamics of mobilization and repression in the Occupy movement. This movement emerged in late 2011 in the United States and sought to protest the growing economic inequality and the growing influence of corporations in politics. This project focuses on Occupy chapters which emerged in 74 out of the 100 largest cities in the United States. The first empirical chapter of this project focuses on dynamics which affect differences in protest size, measured in terms of protest turnouts relative to population. This chapter first demonstrates the importance of large student populations and greater numbers of universities …

Undergraduate Student Perceptions And Awareness Of Genetic Counseling, Amanda Gerard

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Genetic counseling (GC) is a rapidly expanding field, and the supply of certified genetic counselors is currently unable to keep up with job demand. Research is fairly limited regarding the awareness and perceptions potential genetic counseling program applicants have of the field and what factors most influence their interest in the field. This study aimed to examine some of these topics. The current study includes data collected from 1,389 undergraduate students in the sciences at 23 universities across the United States who were surveyed regarding information related to their awareness, perceptions, knowledge, and interest in GC. This study evaluated the impact of anxiety reduction on academic engagement for elementary students experiencing high levels of anxiety. For participating students, the anxiety appeared to be impacting academic performance in the school setting. Student participants received modified cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) including exposure tasks with adult support in the school setting. Mindfulness Program For Student Athletes, Daniel J. Savory Apr 2017

Mindfulness Program For Student Athletes, Daniel J. Savory

M.A. in Leadership Studies: Capstone Project Papers

Student athletes face challenging situations during their time at college which can cause their experience to be a negative one if they are not fully supported. This can be due to several factors; most athletes face an immense amount of pressure to succeed in the classroom as well as in their sport. Also, many athletes are moving away from home for the first time and this can be a daunting feeling. They are expected to manage all of these challenges, and if mishandled, it can lead to an overwhelming amount of negative stress resulting in an unsuccessful time as a …

Progressing Towards The Future, Joe L. Gates Mr Apr 2017

Progressing Towards The Future, Joe L. Gates Mr

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

In the book, The American College Town, author Blake Gumprechet claims that college towns are often seen as spaces that are more progressive and open-minded than the surrounding areas. However, a look through the Marshall University Archives reveals that this wasn't always the case for Huntington's campus. This presentation discusses the ways that representations and discussions of minority student groups have changed over the course of Marshall’s history. By looking at a collection of articles published in The Parthenon during the 1960’s, my paper is able to discuss some of Marshall's past.

This paper follows The Parthenon storyline of the …

Benefits Of Having A Pet At College: Perception Of Today’S College Students, Morgan Jenkins

Georgia College Student Research Events

The present literature review examined data from 10 studies that examined the benefits of pet therapy and well-being. Florence Nightingale, a pioneer of nursing, recognized these benefits in the early 1800s when she used animals to provide support to mentally ill patients. Since then, pets, but mainly dogs, have been used across various populations and in numerous settings such as with geriatrics in nursing homes, in disaster relief, with war veterans suffering from PTSD, with inmates in correctional facilities, with terminal patients in hospice care, and with pediatric patients in the hospital setting. In all of these scenarios, findings suggest …
