Bringing Science To Life In The Fifth-Grade Classroom Through Hands-On Learning, Kelly Gately May 2019

Bringing Science To Life In The Fifth-Grade Classroom Through Hands-On Learning, Kelly Gately

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Science helps provide insight into the unknown and provides an outlet for exploration of living things. Children are innately curious about how thing work, and they are eager to ask questions. Science is the perfect outlook for students to fully engage in their inquisitiveness, but yet, many classrooms are skipping over science lessons or choosing to heavily focus on other subjects, such as reading and writing. Science is often taught as an elective, integrated with other subjects or it is only focused on for a short period of time. Unfortunately, when this subject does receive attention, lessons are heavily text-book …

Stem And Adolescent Girls, Brittany Elizabeth Stein May 2019

Stem And Adolescent Girls, Brittany Elizabeth Stein

Counselor Education Capstones

The projected growth of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers is unprecedented (Lufkin, 2009). With the growth of women in the workforce and/or obtaining post-secondary degrees, the projected number of females in STEM fields should increase; however, that is not the case. Recently, the estimated percent of women in STEM careers is less than 30% in the United States (“Has employment”, n.d.). The reasons behind this underrepresentation of women in STEM careers includes multiple facets such as: sexist practices in education and workplace, psychological factors that influence the self and career choice and social factors including, but not limited …

Benefits Of Integrating Physical Activities Into The Elementary Classroom, Maritza Juliet Ruelas May 2019

Benefits Of Integrating Physical Activities Into The Elementary Classroom, Maritza Juliet Ruelas

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

There have been significant studies stating that physical activities have been eliminated for elementary school students. Today students are expected to attend school for approximately eight hours, five days out of the week. This senior capstone paper examines the many benefits of integrating physical activities into the elementary classroom through the use of literature review, anonymous-survey of twenty two students, and anonymous-survey of four teachers. This means that kinesthetic learning style has been limited for students at the elementary school level. The results indicate that integrating physical activities into the elementary classroom is proven to be beneficial to the overall …

Wounds And Writing : Building Trauma-Informed Approaches To Writing Pedagogy., Michelle L. Day May 2019

Wounds And Writing : Building Trauma-Informed Approaches To Writing Pedagogy., Michelle L. Day

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation builds a trauma-informed approach to writing pedagogy informed by writing studies scholarship about trauma and inclusive pedagogy, clinical social work literature on trauma-informed care, and interviews with nine current University of Louisville writing faculty about their experiences academically supporting distressed students. I identify three central touchstones—“students are coddled,” “teacher’s aren’t therapists,” and “institutions don’t support trauma-informed teaching”—in scholarly and public debates regarding what to do about student trauma/distress in higher education. After exploring the valid concerns and misconceptions underpinning these touchstones, I illustrate how clinical research offers a way forward to help writing instructors develop more complex understandings …

Effects Of Conjoint Behavioral Consultation On Student-Teacher Interactions, Sonya A. Bhatia May 2019

Effects Of Conjoint Behavioral Consultation On Student-Teacher Interactions, Sonya A. Bhatia

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Young children with disruptive classroom behaviors are at-risk for negative interactions with their teachers (Nelson & Roberts, 2000), which put children at increased risk for long-term negative social, academic, and behavioral outcomes (Sutherland & Oswald, 2005). Conjoint Behavioral Consultation (CBC) is an evidence-based family-school partnership intervention focused on strengthening relationships and promoting continuity and consistency between children’s key environments (Sheridan & Kratochwill, 2008). The efficacy of CBC on child outcomes and parent-teacher relationships has been demonstrated (Sheridan et al., 2017); however, no research has determined whether CBC improves student-teacher interactions.

This study examined CBC’s effect on student-teacher interactions using a …

Increasing College Students’ Awareness On Mindset Practices While Teaching, Alejandra Sandoval May 2019

Increasing College Students’ Awareness On Mindset Practices While Teaching, Alejandra Sandoval

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Teachers often encourage students to succeed and reward students’ accomplishments by offering supportive, esteem-boosting messages. However, teachers may not always be aware of how the messages they send to their students may affect a student’s mindset. Research shows that when teachers praise a student for their intelligence rather than for a student’s effort, the student will develop a fixed mindset of which the child will believe their basic qualities are fixed traits, later leading to poor academic achievement. To address teachers’ awareness on developing mindsets, I created a recorded presentation about fixed and growth mindsets and delivered it to CSUMB …

Effects Of Under-Diagnosis Of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder In Female Students, Nina Hobbs May 2019

Effects Of Under-Diagnosis Of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder In Female Students, Nina Hobbs

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The number of students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is increasing in the United States; but there is a shortfall in the under-diagnosis of female students with ADHD. This senior capstone examines the effects of the under-diagnosis of ADHD in female students through the use of extensive literature review and questionnaires posed to local school elementary teachers. The findings indicate that female students with undiagnosed ADHD do not only suffer academically, but also socially and mentally throughout their life. Although assessed through the same process and criteria, female students with ADHD display symptoms far different from those of their …

Although most researchers agree that environmental education is very important to develop pro- environmental behavior (PEB) in children, it is uncertain whether environmental education has positive outcomes, especially in Indonesian schools. This study tried to get some insight into whether green school students will have a higher nature relatedness and thus will behave more environmentally friendly, compared with students from schools with a regular national curriculum. In this study, 304 elementary public schools’ students and 229 green schools’ students participated. Data were collected through self-report scale, behavioral observation and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The result shows that green school student’s, …

Ten Commandments Of Teaching: A Culminating Education Project, Charlene Martin Apr 2019

Ten Commandments Of Teaching: A Culminating Education Project, Charlene Martin

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

During a senior capstone course in instructional methods, teacher candidates participated in a discussion regarding what the essentials are for good teaching in light of biblical principles—a discussion integrating biblical principles and content knowledge acquired as they progressed through the College of Education. Genesis 1:26-28 indicates that mankind was created to rule over God’s earth in His name. Arguably, this mandate is the basis for all civilizations and cultures. From this perspective, one purpose of school could be to give students power tools for exercising dominion; school prepares students for work and their work declares the Glory of God. As …

Clinical Floatation And Perceived Stress In College Students, Keyton Sampson

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Clinical Floatation and Perceived Stress in College Students

Clinical floatation has been proposed to address a number of common concerns, such as to relieve stress, recover from injuries, fight addiction, and improve chronic pain. Previous studies have demonstrated that clinical floatation is classified as an emotion-focused coping strategy, reducing blood pressure, cortisol levels, heart rate, and muscle tension (Van Dierendonck & Te Nijenhuis, 2005). The goal of the study is to determine whether clinical floatation benefits perceived stress to a great extent than do traditional interventions or no intervention. It is hypothesized that those partaking in the float sessions will …

Students of color and students from low-income families are suspended or expelled from school at much higher rates than their white and non-poor peers. This lecture presented data on discipline disparities. It considered explanations such as discrimination in how schools punish students and whether majority-minority and majority-white schools approach discipline differently. This discussion is placed in the context of local, state, and …

Increasing The Frequency Of Tutors' Reinforcement Of Compliance Behaviors, Sruthi Rameshkumar Apr 2019

Increasing The Frequency Of Tutors' Reinforcement Of Compliance Behaviors, Sruthi Rameshkumar

Honors Theses

Abstract

Compliance behaviors occurring prior to the delivery of an instruction, such as handing over preferred items, making eye contact, and folding hands in the ready position help prepare students for success in discrete-trial training (DTT) interventions. These behaviors are usually taught in early intervention with a continuous reinforcement schedule, but once they are mastered, they are rarely revisited or maintained. Without intermittent reinforcement of these behaviors, they are likely to decrease in frequency and may lead to the use of restrictive or intrusive methods to gain compliance during DTT sessions. The current study used a multiple-baseline across participants design …
