The Effects Of Fictional Literature On Real-World Perceptions Of Students, Dylan Dowty Apr 2021

The Effects Of Fictional Literature On Real-World Perceptions Of Students, Dylan Dowty

Honors Theses

The ways in which fiction affect the perceptions of high school students’ realities are many, and they vary widely depending on the book read. While lessons can be learned from every fictional book, certain types of books are more beneficial and relevant for students. Young adult literature, while often overlooked, is a significant source of students’ perspective shifts and metacognition. Every book has a lesson that it can teach students, but contemporary young adult literature deserves to be taught in schools alongside the classics in order for students to make personal connections with the texts they read and take an …

Human Performance and Sport Sciences faculty Research

Objectives

The aims of this study were to examine the prevalence of overweight/obesity and to explore sex differences in body weight perceptions and correlates of weight gain among Black students at 2 historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the USA.

Methods

Participants completed a paper-based survey, and their height and weight were measured (67% completion rate).

Results

The overweight and obesity rates were 33.8% and 26.9%, respectively. More females than males accurately assessed their weight (p<0.05). Body weight underestimation was associated with male sex, excellent/very good perceived overall health, and not being informed by a doctor of having overweight or obesity (p<0.01). Higher odds of ≥5% weight gain were related to female sex, living on campus, and not being informed by a doctor of having overweight or obesity (p<0.05).

Conclusion

Given the high overweight and obesity rates among Black students, HBCUs in the USA should develop intervention strategies for …

Keon Burns Researches Black Grocers And The Mississippi Freedom Struggle, Rebecca Lauck Cleary

Blog Posts

When the archives closed due to COVID-19, Keon Burns had to change his original idea for his thesis and focus on something closer to home. So he chose a paper he wrote for Catarina Passidomo's SST 555: Foodways course about his great-grandparents' grocery store in Bolton, Mississippi. That paper morphed into "Black Grocers, Black Activism, and the Spaces in Between: Black Grocery Stores during the Mississippi Freedom Struggle Movement," the thesis Burns successfully defended April 26. In the original paper, he only discussed the food-related research that he came across, but the store represented much more than a food source …

Suicide Risk And School Related Stressors In Veterinary Students, Deanna Nicole Arnold Apr 2021

Suicide Risk And School Related Stressors In Veterinary Students, Deanna Nicole Arnold

Honors College Theses

Compared to the general population of the United States, veterinarians are at an increasingly higher risk for suicide. This is commonly associated with stressful work environments, long work hours, poor work-life balance, client demands and complaints, and large amounts of euthanasia procedures. While many studies have been performed to confirm the above statements, few to no studies have been done on students currently enrolled in veterinary school to assess their mental health. This study will survey graduate school students in this field and will evaluate their mental health state and risk factors towards suicide. Through comparing the results of this …

It was the whoring hour.

Ready the sheets and the lingerie.

Ready the moans and the delicious delights to be discovered.

Ready the bodies wanting and hungry.

Ready the minds, sore for distraction, aching for bliss.

Slowly the sliding of cloth, flesh venturing out into the open air

Hands gliding over the landscape of his torso; breath breaking from composure to ecstasy A landscape not her own. Breath not meant to be broken.

Rein it in.

What Can I Do About It? Teaching Behaviors That Strengthen Students' Mathematical Identities, Sandra Miles

Student Research Symposium

As test scores place US teenagers lower down on the list of developed countries in mathematics achievement, scholars seek to understand what is keeping students from engaging more deeply and successfully in mathematics. Though many affective and motivational factors contribute to future mathematics engagement, mathematics self-concept has been shown to be a consistent predictor of long-term outcomes (Marsh et al., 2019), especially when affective or emotional outcomes are considered (Huang, 2012). This paper examines the construct of mathematical self-concept through analysis of the mathematical identity variable in the High School Longitudinal Survey (2009), and investigates whether teacher behaviors, such as …
