Food Insecurity Among Students In Alabama's Black Belt, Brandon Craig Renfroe

Food insecurity is a multifaceted problem. Though it involves lack of access to sufficient nutrition for an active, healthy life, it frequently portends more. Food insecurity negatively impacts academic performance, mental and physical health, and social/emotional well-being. It is particularly detrimental for rural adolescent students, who experience food insecurity at higher rates than their urban and suburban peers. Especially is this true for minority students, whose food insecurity rates are more than twice the national average. Few studies address the lived experiences of transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) students in engineering. Grounded in critical trans politics (Spade, 2015), this dissertation contributes to the literature on TGNC students in engineering by examining their experiences negotiating their identities while navigating interrelated systems of oppression in a field dominated by White, heterosexual, cisgender men. Using a critical constructivism framework, I conducted a narrative inquiry to explore the lived experiences of five TGNC students in engineering programs. Participants experienced TGNC oppression at their universities, built LGBTQ+ and TGNC communities, and described more welcoming climates in non-engineering contexts compared to engineering. …

Decision-making is a fundamental skill that health care professionals use daily which involves the interaction of many cognitive systems. Critical and lateral thinking are two approaches to decision-making often cited in literature. Critical thinking emphasizes reasoning and systematic analyzation, while lateral thinking encompasses imagination and creativity. Speech-language pathology (SLP) is a prime example of a profession that amalgamates creative processes with organized methodologies. However, when individuals adopt a growth mindset, they are more likely to persist; despite, experiencing challenges. High school students may benefit from increasing their growth mindset statements by continuing with their education despite encountering challenges. Therefore, I developed a two-day lesson on developing growth mindset statements for a ninth-grade English class at Pajaro Valley High School in Watsonville, California.

Children who are unaware of unseen learning disabilities may not understand the complexities behind them and how to support their peers in being part of the classroom. When children learn about invisible disabilities, they can build their empathy and be more inclusive with their peers. This capstone was implemented at the Wellness Center in the Harden Middle School, a public school located in Salinas, California. The school has observed a drop in student grades in recent years and adopted the Check-In Check-Out (CICO) program to support students between the ages of 12 and 13 experiencing behavioral issues. To increase the impact of CICO, the school has experimented with customizing the program’s criteria for participation. This study is a descriptive qualitative study that aims to describe the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) of online learning students. This study's sample size was 236 students. The sampling technique used is non-probability sampling of the convenience type. In this study, data is gathered through the use of a questionnaire. The data was analyzed by calculating the score and percentage of each statement item. The calculation data is then described per aspect and indicator to produce a representative conclusion. The findings revealed that students' metacognitive regulation was metacognitive knowledge in online learning.

BACKGROUND: Acceptance into U.S. MD-PhD dual-degree programs is highly competitive, and the lengthy training program requires transitioning between multiple phases (pre-clinical-, PhD-research-, and clinical-training phases), which can be stressful. Challenges faced during MD-PhD training could exacerbate self-doubt and anxiety. Impostor phenomenon is the experience of feeling like a fraud, with some high-achieving, competent individuals attributing their successes to luck or other factors rather than their own ability and hard work. To our knowledge, impostor phenomenon among MD-PhD trainees has not been described. This study examined impostor phenomenon experiences during MD-PhD training and reasons trainees attributed to these feelings.
