Encouraging Lifelong Learning For Engineering Management Undergraduates, Susan L. Murray, Stephen A. Raper
Encouraging Lifelong Learning For Engineering Management Undergraduates, Susan L. Murray, Stephen A. Raper
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The current ABET guidelines place an emphasis on life-long learning for our undergraduate students. What is life-long learning? How can we encourage students to consider global issues, current events, or even anything "that isn't going to be on the next test"? In this paper we present survey results evaluating habits of undergraduate students entering an engineering management program and seniors related to life-long learning including attending professional society meetings, reading trade publications, reading business related books, and other learning outside of the classroom activities. This paper also presents a two semester effort to increase life-long learning activities among undergraduate engineering …

This paper is part of a panel entitled "Modernizing the First Course in Power Systems." In this paper the authors discuss the first power course requirement at the University of Missouri-Rolla. Undergraduate students are required to take a power course, but they may select between a power systems course or a electromechanical conversion course.
Engineering Management And Industrial Engineering: Similarities And Differences, Cassandra C. Elrod, Ashley Rasnic, William Daughton
Engineering Management And Industrial Engineering: Similarities And Differences, Cassandra C. Elrod, Ashley Rasnic, William Daughton
Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works
Engineering Management is a broad and diverse field of engineering, thereby making it difficult to define exactly what the degree encompasses. At the same time, the somewhat related degree of Industrial Engineering is better understood. Some universities offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Management with an emphasis in Industrial Engineering, while others offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering with an emphasis in Engineering Management. In today's world of competitive academia, many wonder if these degree fields are similar enough to be used interchangeably or if there is a distinct difference separating the two degrees, making …

Teaching "Global Project Management" With Distributed Team Projects, Randy Weinberg, Benjamin Gan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The education of rising professionals must keep pace with changing forces of globalization and the realities of distributed work. Students who understand the basics of global project management, teamwork and collaboration are likely to find themselves at a competitive advantage over those who do not. This article describes the experiences in an undergraduate course called Global Project Management offered concurrently at two universities, one in the U.S. and one in Singapore, and incorporating collaborative student projects.

While the burgeoning trend in online social networks has gained much attention from the media, few studies in library science have yet to address the topic in depth. This article reports on a survey of 126 academic librarians concerning their perspectives toward Facebook.com, an online network for students. Findings suggest that librarians are overwhelmingly aware of the ‘Facebook phenomenon.’ Those who are most enthusiastic about the potential of online social networking suggested ideas for using Facebook to promote library services and events. Few individuals reported problems or distractions as a result of patrons accessing Facebook in the library. When …

Cognitive Processes Of Students Solving Technical Problems, Todd Kelley, Roger Hill
Reports of Center Studies
The purpose of this study was to better understand cognitive strategies used by high school technology education students who have participated in technology education instruction with an engineering design focus. Specifically, this study evaluated the cognitive strategies of students participating in Project Lead the Way curriculum programs compared with students participating in technology education programs partnering with the National Center for Engineering and Technology Education (NCETE). High school students from these two groups were studied as they worked through an ill-defined problem: moving drinking water in developing countries. The data collected from these protocols was analyzed using a coding process …

Enhancing Student Learning In Engineering Technology Programs? A Case For Physical Simulations, Alok Verma
Enhancing Student Learning In Engineering Technology Programs? A Case For Physical Simulations, Alok Verma
Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
Physical simulations have a proven record as a teaching tool. Concepts that are often hard to grasp are made easy by the use of physical simulation activities. The constructivism learning theory suggests that people learn better by actively participating in the process of learning. According to the Encyclopedia of Educational Technology, "Simulation-based learning involves the placement of a student into a realistic scenario or situation. The student is then responsible for any changes that occur as a result of their decisions." A number of physical simulation based tools have been developed by the author for use as instructional tools to …

The Bologna Process And Its Implications For U.S. Legal Education, Laurel S. Terry
Faculty Scholarly Works
Virtually all European countries are in the midst of a massive multi-year project intended to dramatically restructure higher education in Europe. This project, which is known as the Bologna Process or Sorbonne-Bologna, began less than ten years ago when four European Union (EU) countries signed a relatively vague agreement. The Bologna Process has now grown to forty-six countries, including all of the EU Member States and nineteen non-EU countries. The Bologna Process participants have agreed to form the European Higher Education Area or EHEA by 2010; among other goals, the EHEA is intended to help Europe better compete in the …
