Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents an innovative teaching approach, how it is implemented, student response results of the implementation, and the assessment of impact on student learning. The findings are based on surveys given to the students after each lab lesson taught in partnership with university (Project STEP) and community members. The purpose of this paper is to showcase authentic molecular technology research methods that have been incorporated into a high school level water quality study in cooperation with a watershed restoration program. Typically, water quality studies focus on chemical analysis such as pH, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, orthophosphates, nitrates, temperature, …

Recent Advances In Marine Microbiology - A Selection Of Critical Evaluations Of Research Papers, Colin Munn, Heather Guy, Grace Phillips, Elizabeth Robertson
The Plymouth Student Scientist
This collection of articles features examples of coursework submitted by three students taking the module BIOL3309 „Marine Microbiology – Ecology & Applications‟ as part of the BSc Hons Marine Biology degree at Plymouth. In this module, students discuss recent research papers in regular seminars, and keep a portfolio of critical evaluations of papers that they have studied. This subject is arguably one of the fastest moving fields in marine science and recent discoveries, made possible by the application of new techniques (especially metagenomics and rapid DNA sequencing) have revolutionized our understanding of ocean processes and the interactions of microbes with …

Assignment Research Calculator: Designing And Implementing A Customized Product To Reach Your Students, Monica Fusich, Jane Magee, Elisabeth Thomas
Faculty and Staff Publications
The original Assignment Calculator from the University of Minnesota is a free open-source tool which helps students manage time and organize the steps of a research project.(FN1) It provides a schedule and timeline for each step, and includes tips and outside links to more information. The head of instruction and outreach services in the Henry Madden Library recognized the value of this popular tool, but felt we could expand on its potential for students and faculty here at California State University-Fresno. We accomplished this by tailoring it to our own library and campus resources, staff and services, thus making it …

Using Creative Problem Solving Tools With Kindergarden Students, Santina Tulumello
Using Creative Problem Solving Tools With Kindergarden Students, Santina Tulumello
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
This project was on using creative problem solving tools with kindergarten students. The main goal of this project was to see how the students would react to the tools and see if they would understand the tools. I also used two different types of learners to see the differences in the comprehension of the tools. I developed several lessons using Brainstorming, Card Sort, PMI, and Story boarding. I applied the lessons to the two different groups of students and debriefed each lesson. I found that these tools are useful and, if delivered clearly, any type of learner can benefit from …

Does Student Leadership Participation Enhance The Development Of Emotional Intelligence, Michelle Breanne Curro
Master's Theses
Emotional Intelligence is believed to explain how emotions may be used, monitored, and measured to predict workplace success and failure, the suggestion that if individuals can balance the emotions within themselves and others, they can use their skills to better their organization. This study explored the development of Emotional Intelligence in the ASI Student Manager Team in comparison to Student Government members at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) during the fall 2008 quarter. The Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i) was used to assess student leaders’ Emotional Intelligence (EI) development (N = 27). A two sample t-test …
