The research done in this project analyzes BYU students' position on preserving the environment and particularly measures their knowledge regarding wind power and their willingness to contribute to the purchase of wind power by BYU. Utah Clean Energy commissioned students of the Marriott School of Management at BYU to carry out this project. Research was based on 402 surveys, which were conducted throughout campus and BYU housing complexes. The survey questionnaire and the results of the survey are located in the appendix. The focus of this study is the impact of student perception of the validity of content on student learning. It is proposed that, if the content of a subject is perceived by students as being different to the content of another subject, a result of this perceived difference is that students will treat their learning in these subjects differently. To test this proposal, student beliefs about items from the content of the religious education course are compared with student responses to items of content of their science course. Access to higher education at the beginning of the new millennium faces unprecedented challenges. Although many of those challenges have been identified and addressed through research and federal and state policies, there still exists an inherent gap in the current and potential future success of today’s college students. This is particularly true for minority and lower-income students. Disparate Academic Environments: An Emergent Framework Of Socialization, Michael D. Thompson

The Qualitative Report

Twenty-four graduate associate and/or full professors from four disparate academic environments were interviewed on the salient attributes they emphasize and reinforce to their graduate students in socializing them to the professional norms of their respective academic discipline. Qualitative research methodology was utilized to assess and understand the socialization mechanisms and processes of graduate students within disparate academic environments. The results of the study have produced a new theoretical framework for understanding the differential patterns of student learning and development as a result of student’s collegiate experience.

Integrating Biological Principles In Environmental Engineering Education: Summary Results Of A Three-Year Pilot Study, Daniel B. Oerther

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Teaching biology to engineers is a challenge. For environmental engineers, biological principles are necessary to understand microorganisms that are removed from drinking water as well as microorganisms that treat waste in sewage treatment plants and bioremediation field sites. At the University of Cincinnati, we integrated state-of-the-art research in environmental microbiology within our graduate and undergraduate environmental engineering curricula. For the past three years, we taught a novel course entitled, "Molecular Biology in Environmental Engineering." Course evaluations over the past three years suggested that the course was successful for primarily two reasons, namely: (1) the course employed a problem-based learning approach …

Report On The Spring 2003 Survey Of Umm Seniors: Assessment Of Student Learning: General Education, Umm Institutional Research

Assessment of Student Learning Reports

From February 18 through March 7 of 2003, an online survey entitled “Assessment of Your Learning Experience: General Education” was administered via the Internet to UMM seniors. The Office of Institutional Research and Reporting in the Twin Cities coded the questionnaire into HTML format and prepared the statistical report. There were 182 responses to the survey. Since the total number of graduating seniors invited to take the survey was 317, this was a 57.4% response rate.

Project Second Chance: A Dropout Prevention Program, May W. Bolden

During the 1998-1999 academic year, 8.78% of the students in grades 11 and 12 dropped out of the two high schools located in Florence, Alabama. This percentage increased each year and was projected to reach an unacceptable rate of 18.51% during the 2001-2002 academic year.

The researcher initiated a dropout prevention program, called Project Second Chance, in order to reduce the dropout rate. Project Second Chance allowed students to retake failed or lost-credit courses in evening classes. Family Connectedness And Sexual Risk-Taking Among Urban Youth Attending Alternative High Schools, Christine M Markham, Susan R Tortolero, S Liliana Escobar-Chaves, Guy S Parcel, Ronald Harrist, Robert C Addy

CONTEXT: Youth in alternative high schools engage in risky sexual behavior at higher rates than do their peers in regular schools, placing themselves at an increased risk of sexually transmitted disease and unintended pregnancy. Family connectedness is associated with reduced adolescent sexual risk-taking, although this association has not been tested among alternative school youth.

METHODS: A sample of 976 urban, predominantly minority alternative high school students in Houston, Texas, were surveyed in 2000-2002. Survey data were analyzed using logistic regression to determine whether family connectedness is related to sexual risk-taking.

RESULTS: Overall, 68% of students reported ever having had sex. …
