Students Talk About Gender And Race Within The Classroom, Amanda Lucock

Media and Communication Studies Honors Papers

This study attempts to gain a better understanding of students’ experiences and perceptions of conversations about gender and race in the classroom. Specifically, this study focuses on issues and concerns that arise in the course of talking about gender and race. There were over 20 hours of classes observed, eight one-on-one in-depth interviews, and over three hours of recorded classroom conversations. Through my analysis, I found that students used several devices, including storytelling and attacking, to speak about these taboo issues within the classroom.

From the beginning of my experience at Marquette, I continually observed students that appeared to demonstrate no enthusiasm for getting an education, reflected in a noticeable lack of participation in class discussions. I felt my expectations of academia being crushed as students boasted about skipping lectures and passively sat in class, seemingly disinterested in the professor and the material. If college was truly regarded as an opportunity for intellectual growth, why did students treat education as nothing more than an obligation? The purpose of this phenomenological study was to discover how certain students achieved academic success despite the lack of parental involvement. Eight students in grades 4-6 at Riverton Elementary School were selected for the study. The name Riverton Elementary School is a pseudonym. Pseudonyms were used in this study for the name and location of the school and also used for the names of students, teachers, and parents. Exposure to community violence is positively correlated with aggression towards other people (Allwood & Bell, 2008). Researchers in this area have classified aggression into two broad categories, proactive and reactive aggression. Proactive aggression refers to aggression that is used as an instrument to achieve a goal, whereas reactive aggression refers to aggression that is used as a response to a real or perceived treat (Chaux, Arboleda, & Rincon, 2012). Exposure to community violence impacts both reactive and proactive aggression, but mechanisms explaining this relationship are still unclear. Although educators already recognize the value in engaging student learning through classroom projects and service-learning, assessment of student learning through classroom projects may be accompanied by a shift of attention from mastery of ideas to embodied knowledge. We argue that embodiment is the basic semiotic condition of being human—of being both an expressive and perceptive (communicative) being among others. Linking this philosophy of communication principle to the topic of assessment, the article offers assessment research a focus of attention on learning settings: from embodiment as learning context, to the built environment of classrooms, as well as to group interaction. Objective: College marks a time of transition and self-exploration. Quality of life can be enhanced or diminished throughout this experience. The objective of this study was to identify the level of religiosity, spirituality and quality of life and identify if there was a relationship between a person's level of religiosity and spirituality and quality of life.

Participants and Methods: The sample group, consisting of 548 Midwestern university undergraduate students, completed the Spiritual Wellbeing Scale (SWBS) and the Ontological Wellbeing Scale (OWBS) in the spring semester of 2015.

This exploratory study was designed to determine if there is a level of alignment between technology education curriculum and theories of intellectual development. The researcher compared Epstein's Brain Growth Theory and Piaget's Status of Intellectual Development with technology education curriculum from Australia, England, and the United States. The researcher hypothesized that there would be alignment between technology education curriculum, brain growth, and intellectual development theories. The results indicate that students could become more technologically literate citizens if technology education was presented to them earlier in their school careers. First-year community college students are often from underrepresented groups who are unaccustomed to voicing their needs or to being recognized for having more and varied needs than other groups. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to gain an understanding of the factors that may engender or prevent success through listening to what first-year community college students have to say. Research questions addressed what students identified as challenges and successes during their first year and how first person accounts can contribute to the information college personnel need to understand.

The purpose of this capstone was to raise awareness of the importance of implementing the Hmong culture into classrooms, especially due to many Hmong students’ lack of academic performance in schools. Hmong students have suffered tremendously in school due to language barriers and culture shock. The research involved interviewing a sample of Fresno County teachers and students. Fresno has the largest population of Hmong people in California. The aim of this study is to identify the difference for Anthropometric variety and physical test result between acceptance and non acceptance student. The researcher assumed that there was no significant differences between the anthropometric variety and physical test results. The researcher used comparative curriculum. The results shows that run 60 (2.60), run 540 (2.51), long jump (3.30), exercise belly (2.36), and push up (1.94) better than table value (1.64). While there was no BM (0.52), BT (0.06). but it was sigmficart difference in FM (8.82). The conclusion of the results include force and weak the difference between the tests. …
