A Study Of The Effects Of Utilizing The Writing Process As An Instructional Strategy On Student Thinking Skills In Ninth-Grade Biology Courses, Gene P Butler
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This was an initial study that examined the effect of the type of instruction used in biology I classrooms on learner development of critical thinking, as measured by the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal. Form A of the instrument was used as the pretest, and Form B of the instrument was used as the posttest. The independent variable was teaching method and consisted of two levels: (1) "the writing process," as a teaching method adapted for science instruction, and (2) the "traditional" teaching method, which relied on lecture, discussion, textbook assignments, and verification laboratories; Three teachers from schools within the Clark …

Honors Capstones
An excerpt from the 1986-87 Northern Illinois University Honors Program Handbook states the philosophy of the NIU Honors Program. The philosophy suggests that the program is directed toward highly capable students with inquiring minds who wish to work independently on projects of their own design and who value the ability to interact with faculty in creating these independent projects. In past years, however, the Honors staff and faculty have questioned whether the philosophy they promote is in agreement with the philosophy of the highly capable students with whom they work. Are students with “high intellectual potential and demonstrated ability” interested …

Science Lab: A Peer Approach, Courtney C. Ronca
Science Lab: A Peer Approach, Courtney C. Ronca
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The writer implemented an intensive science program for the fourth, fifth and sixth grade students plus one self-contained SLD class of intermediate students. The two goals of the program were to increase the number of classroom teachers using the lab and to increase the amount of time that the science lab was used. All of the regular intermediate teacher and one self-contained learning disabled intermediate teacher used the lab. The implementation lasted ten weeks with the lab being used by approximately three classes per day four days a week. The fifth day was used to primarily clean up and reorganize …

Improving Auditory Sequencing Skills In The Kindergarten Age Child Through The Increased Instruction Of Music, Millicent Hume Brandt
Improving Auditory Sequencing Skills In The Kindergarten Age Child Through The Increased Instruction Of Music, Millicent Hume Brandt
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The writer applied an increased frequency of general music instruction given to a target group of kindergarten children in order to measure its impact on auditory memory sequencing skills. A control group received the general music instruction on a less frequent basis. The writer, a music teacher specialist, theorized that skills learned in the music class setting would transfer to other (academic) classroom settings, as measured by a standardized testing instrument and a classroom teacher survey checklist.
The writer designed a method of instruction using music classroom materials selected to include sequencing and auditory memory skills. The target group received …
