Behavioral Analysis Of Interactions Between Teachers And Children With Selective Mutism, Jason D. Wallace
Behavioral Analysis Of Interactions Between Teachers And Children With Selective Mutism, Jason D. Wallace
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The present study focused on the interactions between a child with selective mutism and that child's teachers. The hypothesis was that the teachers unknowingly maintained the mutism by not placing the expectations of speech on the child. Therefore, by training three out of the four teachers how to interact with the child with selective mutism, and using the fourth teacher as a control, the researchers were able to identify that the training not only changed the three teachers' behaviors, but also the child with selective mutism's behaviors as well. Also, based on a pre-training/post-training test, the teachers had a much …
They Don't Really Want To Know Us: Experiences And Perceptions Of International Students At The Technological University Dublin, Almut Schlepper
They Don't Really Want To Know Us: Experiences And Perceptions Of International Students At The Technological University Dublin, Almut Schlepper
Articles
This paper seeks to explore the experiences and perceptions of international, non-EU students at the Technological University Dublin. My interest in the subject derives from my work as a lecturer at a college with an increasing number of international students and from my participation as a student on a course which made me appreciate the value of a diverse student and lecturer body. The sample of the survey I carried out included international students and lecturers at one campus of the Technological University Dublin. While the results indicated that international students are just as heterogeneous as Irish students, they are …

Report On The Spring 2004 Survey Of Umm Seniors: Assessment Of Student Learning: General Education, Umm Institutional Research
Assessment of Student Learning Reports
From March 15 through April 2 of 2004, an online survey entitled “Assessment of Your Learning Experience: General Education” was administered via the Internet to UMM seniors. The Office of Institutional Research and Reporting in the Twin Cities coded the questionnaire into HTML format and prepared the statistical report. There were 164 responses to the survey. Since the total number of graduating seniors invited to take the survey was 359, this was a 45.7% response rate.

Two Perspectives On The Effectiveness Of An Entry-Level Community Rehabilitation Training Program: A Comparison Of Student And Supervisorial Perceptions, Howard D. Twomey Edd
Dissertations
Although a significant amount of attention has focused on the effectiveness of graduate level training programs for rehabilitation counselors, little, if any, research has been devoted to entry-level training programs for Community Rehabilitation Program (CRP) personnel. To remedy this deficiency, this study first developed a survey instrument for both students and their supervisors to measure the change in skills, aptitudes, and attitudes that resulted from participation in a university sponsored training program. After administering the survey to 188 students and 20 supervisors, the perceptions of these two groups were compared and then select demographic measures were used to explain the …

Armenia's current sociopolitical and economic instability and the alarming HIV incidence rates in neighboring countries amplify its risk for a national epidemic. The goals of this study were to assess HIV/AIDS knowledge and risk behaviors among higher education students in Yerevan. Knowledge of HIV transmission through sexual intercourse was markedly higher than that on intravenous transmission and prevailing myths; however, HIV/AIDS knowledge was not related to risk behaviors. Tobacco and alcohol prevalence was relatively high. Students reported risky sexual behaviors, including inconsistent condom use, casual sex, and multiple partners. In addition to descriptive statistics delineating gender differences across the target …

Controlling Choice: Teachers, Students, And Manipulatives In Mathematics Classrooms, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham, M. Gail Jones
Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications
This research study examines the instructional practices of 10 middle grades teachers related to their use of manipulatives in teaching mathematics and their control of mathematics tools during instruction. Through 40 observations of teaching, 30 interviews, and an examination of 67 written documents (including teachers' plans and records), profiles were developed that describe how teachers used and controlled manipulatives during instruction. Results showed that teachers used a variety of manipulatives and other mathematics tools over the course of the year-long study. Teachers reported using a mathematics tool (manipulative, calculator, or measuring device) in 70% of their lessons, and this self-report …
Dangerous Games: Student Hazing And Negligent Supervision, Daniel B. Weddle
Dangerous Games: Student Hazing And Negligent Supervision, Daniel B. Weddle
Faculty Works
For years, some state courts have been willing to hold schools accountable for hazing injuries under a theory of negligent supervision. Outside the hazing context, a claim of negligent supervision will seldom help a plaintiff who has been injured by another student because courts hesitate to hold school officials liable for unanticipated tortuous acts of third parties. With regard to hazing, however, some courts are more willing to view such injuries as foreseeable and preventable, particularly if there has been a history of hazing in groups connected to the school. Where there is knowledge of hazing activities, the power to …

Belief In A Just World Among Undergraduates, Graduate Students, And Law Students, Joseph F Boetcher
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Participants were 135 undergraduates, graduate students, and law students. They were compared on the strength of their belief in a just world. In addition, half the participants were primed with a word task that threatened their belief in a just world. It was hypothesized that the law students would exhibit a stronger belief in a just world than the other two educational groups, and that the primed participants would score higher in just world belief than the non-primed participants. Results failed to support the research hypotheses. Possible interpretations of the results are discussed, and recommendations for future research are offered.

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purposes of this study were: (a) to compare general and special education preservice teachers' attitudes regarding educational placements for students with disabilities, (b) to determine whether these attitudes are disability specific and, (c) to determine whether change in knowledge has an effect on attitude toward placement over the course of a semester while enrolled in introductory classes about students with disabilities. Two groups of respondents comprised of general education and special education preservice teachers participated in this study. A pretest and posttest format was used to gather information. Specifically, data were collected using the Preservice Teacher Service Delivery Survey …
The School Experience From The Students' Perspective: A Comparative Case Study Analysis, John Goldhardt
The School Experience From The Students' Perspective: A Comparative Case Study Analysis, John Goldhardt
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Since the re-authorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 2001 (also known as No Child Left Behind), public schools are required to be more accountable in relationship to student achievement. With the current attention on accountability that is based mostly upon standardized tests, it becomes compelling to study the school experience from the students' perspective. The purpose of this study is not to analyze traditional data from students, but to instead, examine the perceptions of high school senior students based upon their schooling experience and its implications for school leaders; Invitational education and critical theory provide a theoretical …
Virtual Learning Community: A Student Exit Survey And Qualitative Framework, David C Diramio
Virtual Learning Community: A Student Exit Survey And Qualitative Framework, David C Diramio
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
As the mystery and intrigue surrounding technology use in higher education dissipates, the time has come to bring technological initiatives, such as distance education, into the fold with the rest of campus in terms of assessment, accountability, and policy. Although online education shows promise for setting the collegiate learning experience free from the confines of the lecture hall, new challenges are emerging. For example, attrition rates for courses delivered via the Internet are higher than average, typically ten percentage points higher in online courses than in the traditional campus classroom. In an era of declining resources and renewed interest in …

Hard Times And An Uncertain Future: Issues That Confront The Field Of Emotional/Behavioral Disorders, Robert A. Gable
Hard Times And An Uncertain Future: Issues That Confront The Field Of Emotional/Behavioral Disorders, Robert A. Gable
Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications
In this article, I examine challenges to better preparing teachers of students with emotional/behavioral disorders (E/BD). Foremost among these challenges is the lack of agreement regarding a conceptual framework upon which to build quality prevention/intervention practices; instead, various authorities advocate disparate approaches, not all of which have empirical support. I assert that unresolved issues surrounding translating scientific research into classroom practice further hinder efforts to apply the most efficacious intervention options, as does our failure to exert control over the infrastructure of public education and the context in which we serve students with E/BD. Finally, I offer some modest proposals …

Realism Or Distortion In Predicting And Evaluating Exam Performance Among Depressed And Nondepressed Students, Michael J. Kinney
Realism Or Distortion In Predicting And Evaluating Exam Performance Among Depressed And Nondepressed Students, Michael J. Kinney
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Cognitive behavioral theories suggest that depressed people have negatively distorted and inaccurate perceptions and cognitions. The present study measures the accuracy of cognitions by comparing predictions made by depressed and by nondepressed students when they estimate the scores they will earn on an examination. It also compares depressed and nondepressed students on their levels of satisfaction with their exam scores. No difference was found between depressed and nondepressed students in either their predictions of their exam grades or their level of satisfaction with their exam grades. This study fails to support the notion that depression correlates with negative cognitive distortions. …
Evaluation Of The Cooperative Education And Internships Program At Prince George’S Community College, Diana Y. Doman Wilkins
Evaluation Of The Cooperative Education And Internships Program At Prince George’S Community College, Diana Y. Doman Wilkins
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The Cooperative Education and Internships program is charged with placing students in positions that will allow them to gain experience in a work environment related to their major area of study. Job development specialists receive no type of written feedback from the employer, the faculty advisor, or the student on whether or not the placement was successful. The problem is that Cooperative Education and Internships has not demonstrated its effectiveness; therefore, there is reluctance from students, faculty advisors, and job development specialists to continue participating and/or promoting the program.
The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of …

Increasing Student Achievement In The Five Strands Of The Mathematics Portion Of The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, Pamela B. Murphy
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The passing and implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 dramatically increased public awareness of accountability in U.S. public schools (S. Charp, 2003). State-mandated testing is now present in nearly 40 of the states. Florida educators have struggled to meet the demands of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). In 1998, the Florida A+ Accountability program, which assigns grades to elementary, middle, and high schools, was initiated. The standards-based accountability has forced administrators, teachers, and parents to search for practices that will increase student achievement.

Experiential Learning In Communication Courses: Development And Evaluation Of Learning Activities With Development Of A Resource Manual For Experiential Learning At Olivet Nazarene University, Elizabeth J. Patrick-Trippel
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation addressed the relative lack of experiential learning activities in communication courses at Olivet Nazarene University. Though there had been changes in the curriculum, degrees, and identity of the department over the past 5 years, there had been no attempt to understand the pedagogical implications of these changes.
The objective of this applied dissertation was threefold: first, to develop original experiential activities for use in 3 different communication courses that were content/lecture-based courses; second, to evaluate the newly developed educational activities; and third, based on the evaluation information, to compile a resource manual for interactive learning for professors …

Factors Impacting Reading Achievement: Where’S The Accountability?, Theresa Ann Liggett Smotherman
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Although the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education developed scales that measured variables of assessments, the state of Missouri failed to identify probable causes for the below level results. The purpose of this applied dissertation was to systematically inquire into detail factors which might have an effect on the teaching and learning process. These factors could explain the below level assessment results. The reading discipline was chosen from the Communication Arts component of the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP). This was the state’s testing instrument. Reading was a necessary skill in all tested areas and a criterion that gauged academic achievement; …
