International Extension Programs Information System Version Ii (Iepis Ii): An Mvc Model 2 Design Using Apache Jakarta Struts, Meng-Hsi Tsai

Theses Digitization Project

The International Extension Programs Information System version II (IEPIS II) improves on the IEPIS I (designed by Yu-Pin Chang) by using the MVC Model 2 design pattern for Java Web applications. IEPIS II accomplishes this by employing the Apache Struts framework. The MVC Model 2 design pattern is an architecture that introduces a controller servlet to provide a single point of entry to the web system and to encourage more reuse and extensibility in web applications. Struts is an open sourced framework based on the MVC architectural pattern. It was created by Craig R. McClanahan, who donated it to the …

Controlling Choice: Teachers, Students, And Manipulatives In Mathematics Classrooms, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham, M. Gail Jones

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

This research study examines the instructional practices of 10 middle grades teachers related to their use of manipulatives in teaching mathematics and their control of mathematics tools during instruction. Through 40 observations of teaching, 30 interviews, and an examination of 67 written documents (including teachers' plans and records), profiles were developed that describe how teachers used and controlled manipulatives during instruction. Results showed that teachers used a variety of manipulatives and other mathematics tools over the course of the year-long study. Teachers reported using a mathematics tool (manipulative, calculator, or measuring device) in 70% of their lessons, and this self-report …

Utah Clean Energy commissioned students of the Marriott School of Management at BYU to carry out this project. Research was based on 402 surveys, which were conducted throughout campus and BYU housing complexes. The survey questionnaire and the results of the survey are located in the appendix. From the data gathered, statistical analysis was performed including cross-tabulation, chi-square testing, z-test testing, correlation, regression, and purchase …

Geospatial Technology, Philip Reed, John Ritz Jan 2004

Geospatial Technology, Philip Reed, John Ritz

STEMPS Faculty Publications

Geospatial technology refers to a system that is used to acquire, store, analyze, and output data in two or three dimensions. This data is referenced to the earth by some type of coordinate system, such as a map projection. Geospatial systems include thematic mapping, the Global Positioning System, remote sensing, telemetry, and Geographic Information Systems. The science of mapmaking, cartography, has been around for centuries, and no one is sure of its true beginnings. Each of the above subsystems are elaborate fields unto themselves, however, researchers are linking them together to better understand the world in which we live. Learning …

The School Experience From The Students' Perspective: A Comparative Case Study Analysis, John Goldhardt Jan 2004

The School Experience From The Students' Perspective: A Comparative Case Study Analysis, John Goldhardt

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Since the re-authorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 2001 (also known as No Child Left Behind), public schools are required to be more accountable in relationship to student achievement. With the current attention on accountability that is based mostly upon standardized tests, it becomes compelling to study the school experience from the students' perspective. The purpose of this study is not to analyze traditional data from students, but to instead, examine the perceptions of high school senior students based upon their schooling experience and its implications for school leaders; Invitational education and critical theory provide a theoretical …

Virtual Learning Community: A Student Exit Survey And Qualitative Framework, David C Diramio Jan 2004

Virtual Learning Community: A Student Exit Survey And Qualitative Framework, David C Diramio

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

As the mystery and intrigue surrounding technology use in higher education dissipates, the time has come to bring technological initiatives, such as distance education, into the fold with the rest of campus in terms of assessment, accountability, and policy. Although online education shows promise for setting the collegiate learning experience free from the confines of the lecture hall, new challenges are emerging. For example, attrition rates for courses delivered via the Internet are higher than average, typically ten percentage points higher in online courses than in the traditional campus classroom. In an era of declining resources and renewed interest in …

Exploring Relationships Between Configurations Of Laptop Use And Student Off -Task Behavior, Loretta Donovan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study had three purposes: to explore configurations of laptop use in the middle school setting; to explore the range of student off-task behavior during laptop-based learning experiences; and to explore the relationships between the configurations of use and student off-task behavior. Through a framework of educational change and guided by methodologies of the Concerns-Based Adoption Model of change, an Innovation Configuration Map was developed and used to collect data for this study. The Influence Of State Merit-Based Aid On Access And Educational Experiences: An Exploration Of The Louisiana Tuition Opportunity Program For Students (Tops), Roderick L. Smothers

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Access to higher education at the beginning of the new millennium faces unprecedented challenges. Although many of those challenges have been identified and addressed through research and federal and state policies, there still exists an inherent gap in the current and potential future success of today’s college students. This is particularly true for minority and lower-income students. Some of the identified challenges include: lack of financial assistance, persisting through and graduating from college, pre-college preparation, socioeconomic status, and family support/motivation. This study focuses primarily on the financial barriers that impede the process of providing equal access to all students, which …
