Wellbeing is a crucial topic that is gaining increasing attention in higher education and should be taken into careful consideration. This is a qualitative case study, using a phenomenological approach, which explores the phenomenon of student wellbeing in an international private university in Egypt. Data was collected through semi-structured individual interviews with a total of fourteen participants: eight purposefully selected students who have taken part in wellbeing programs, initiatives, or events at the American University in Cairo (AUC), as well as six faculty/staff members, leaders, mentors, or coaches in the field were interviewed. In addition to the interviews, conversations were …

Impact Of Local Wellness Policies On District Level Physical Activities, Minh Le, Hoang K. Dao, Mia Putnam, Jacob Szeszulski

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Local wellness policies (LWPs) are state required documents that outline school districts’ goals for improving the physical activity of their students. In Texas, most districts use a template for developing their LWP, which has seven prespecified goals that districts may include or further expand upon to include additional goals. PURPOSE: Determine if physical activity components of districts’ LWPs were related to practices within the district. METHODS: LWPs published by public school districts in Texas were collected from district websites, analyzed for content related to physical activity, and assessed to determine if the district text matched the template. Then, responses were …

Gender And Racial Bias In Representations Of Scientists, Andrea Sanchez, Melissa Lehman Feb 2024

Gender And Racial Bias In Representations Of Scientists, Andrea Sanchez, Melissa Lehman

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

Women and non-white individuals are underrepresented in the scientific community. This may be influenced by a lack of diverse representation of scientists in the media. We studied gender and race representation in Google Image search results by classifying the first 100 Google Image search results for "scientist" by gender and race, and based on the content of the information in the associated webpage. The overall results showed roughly equal representation of males and females, and of white and non-white faces; however, when articles focused specifically on gender were excluded, males made up a larger portion of images. Similarly, when articles …

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic chemical that is used to produce resilient plastics. This compound was once found in beverage containers until its removal in 2012. However, it still is used in compact discs, plastic dinnerware, toys, and other household plastics. BPA is a known endocrine disruptor that can affect the reproductive systems of individuals and cause hormonal disturbance. Due to its prevalence in our everyday lives and the plethora of health concerns surrounding BPA, it should be a topic of concern for the public. A primary source of BPA that is under-researched is the use of color developers …

Psychological And Educational Differences Between Student-Athletes And Nonathletes, Sean Blumenfeld, Gabriela Barber, Sophia Fiz, Daniel Ceccoli, Patrick J. Cooper

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

Research suggests that college student-athletes experience more psychological and academic stressors than non-athletes. Therefore, it is prudent for universities to understand and plan to combat the psychological and academic risks that athletes experience. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in four psychological outcomes (stress, anxiety, depression, and resilience) and one academic outcome (GPA) for athletes (N = 44) vs. non-athletes (N = 207). The hypothesis for the study is that there is a significant difference in educational outcomes between student-athletes and non-athletes; however, there is no significant difference in psychological outcomes.

The methodology of the study …

Genrefication In Secondary School Libraries, Lindsay E. Pulsipher Jan 2024

Genrefication In Secondary School Libraries, Lindsay E. Pulsipher

School of Information Sciences Student Scholarship

Most school libraries organize fiction books alphabetically by an author’s last name. In order for a student to find and compare potential fiction reading material, the traditional school library model would have the student either search the library system for the topic and then go from stack to stack looking for books about the topic from any number of locations or seek advice from school library staff who would direct the student to potential titles as part of a reader’s advisory. In an effort to make fiction book selection easier for students, some school librarians have turned to genrefied fiction …

The Black College Student Experience At Four-Year Predominantly White Institutions And Community Colleges: Non-Academic Factors For Consideration In Creating Sense Of Belonging, Alison Handy Jan 2024

The Black College Student Experience At Four-Year Predominantly White Institutions And Community Colleges: Non-Academic Factors For Consideration In Creating Sense Of Belonging, Alison Handy

Educational Studies Dissertations

While Black students have gained increased access to college, the data reflect that there are fewer Black students completing or earning bachelor’s degrees. Existing research reflects findings on various factors, both academic and non-academic, that influence student retention and success in higher education. Historically, theories on student retention and success have emphasized the importance of a student’s academic ability and commitment to obtaining a degree. Scholars such as Vincent Tinto have developed theories on student departure and attrition that emphasize the impact of non-academic factors on academic and social integration and the student experience regarding student sense of belonging at …

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Knowledge exchange (KE) is increasingly important in higher education internationally, yet relatively little attention has been paid to it as a pedagogic opportunity for students. This paper draws on 26 interviews with stakeholders within and outside HE to develop a model of student-led knowledge exchange as a guide for learning through KE. The model includes the following elements: Preconditions, Prior Knowledge, Planning and Place, Pedagogic Context and Product, and offers an analysis of different forms of KE which occur between individuals in a learning triad consisting of student, facilitator and external participant. The research foregrounds a social view of learning …

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT are poised to transform student and educator workflows in higher education. However, there is less documentation on the range of tools students in higher education use, how they use them and in coordination with other online tools for learning, and their expertise using AI tools. We present a mixed-method analysis of a survey conducted at a doctoral-granting university in the United States investigating the adoption of AI tools in the context of other technologies. The findings include how the students used GenAI tools in light of other on-line technologies, their perception of expertise on …

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The research investigates persistent inequities in K-12 school funding in Michigan, emphasizingthe correlation between funding disparities and the socioeconomic status of communities. The study highlights how historically segregated communities of color face significant challenges in securing equitable funding compared to predominantly White communities, perpetuating racial inequalities in educational resources. The study explores the impact of funding on key factors affecting student achievement, such as teacher quality, class size, and socio-emotional support, while analyzing the role of parental education attainment in perpetuating intergenerational inequality. Using structural equation modeling, the findings reveal that socioeconomic status significantly influences educational outcomes and per pupil …

The Influence Of School Policies On Black Students' Mental Health, Ama Ogyaa Boateng Jan 2024

The Influence Of School Policies On Black Students' Mental Health, Ama Ogyaa Boateng

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

When educators target Black students’ hair through school policies, they inadvertently target their racial identity, causing harm to their mental health (Joseph- Salisbury & Connelly, 2018). While previous research has looked at the relationship between a school’s racial climate and Black students’ mental health (Mattison & Aber, 2007), this research study explored the mental health of Black adults who have experienced racial discrimination or racial microaggressions, in relation to hair and dress codes, as Black students in the K-12 school system.

A retrospective survey was used to explore the experiences that Black young adults had in the K-12 school system …

The Factors Causing High Food Insecurity Rates In U.S. Undergraduate Students, Natalie S. Byrd

Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research

The cliché of a college student surviving off ramen noodles sheds light on a deeper issue — high rates of food insecurity among undergraduate college/university students in the United States. There have been countless studies in recent years exploring the hidden causes of why an estimated 40% of students experience food insecurity as of 2022. These studies conclude three main reoccurring factors causing these high rates: costs, accessibility, and demographic characteristics. Food insecurity rates are important for higher education officials to address due to the countless physical and mental health, academic, and equity implications for the students.

Nurturing Inclusivity And Enhancing Learning Environments: Examining Teachers’ Perspectives On Culturally Responsive Social Emotional Learning, Andrea Perez

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) programs and curricula have emerged as a priority in schools over the past three decades, with greater urgency since the COVID-19 pandemic. While SEL programs may show promise in supporting students’ social and emotional needs generally, current SEL practices apply color-evasive approaches, leading to White-centered practices and norms that do not acknowledge the identities and needs of students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). In response, scholars have called for Culturally Responsive Social Emotional Learning (CRSEL) programs to support students in acknowledging their cultural strengths, recognizing their funds of knowledge, and feeling …
