Eco-Anxiety Effects College Students, Alexa Edmundson
Eco-Anxiety Effects College Students, Alexa Edmundson
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
A survey was conducted on the UNL student population to evaluate whether college students, 18-25 year olds who are currently attending an accredited post-secondary school, are experiencing eco-anxiety and if eco-anxiety affects their pro-environmental behaviors. Climate change is taking a toll not only physically on us but also mentally. The mental health of people, especially college students, is not often studied in relation to climate change, but if we are to understand how to create change in this issue then we need to be looking at the whole picture. The hypothesis is that if college students are experiencing eco-anxiety, then …
Burnout And Work Fatigue In Contingent Faculty During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Gina Dimartino
Burnout And Work Fatigue In Contingent Faculty During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Gina Dimartino
Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic and immediate shift to remote learning had a major impact on faculty and students in higher education institutions (HEIs). As a result of the pandemic, many stakeholders in HEIs have experienced burnout and work fatigue, specifically, contingent/adjunct faculty. Contingent/adjunct faculty comprise a majority of faculty who serve students in colleges and universities across the country.
As the needs of students increased during the pandemic, contingent/adjunct faculty experienced increased workloads due to the additional support needed by diverse and challenged students. This further intensified the unique challenges faced by contingent faculty that existed prior to the pandemic in …

Improving Student Engagement Despite Lowering Attention Spans In The Classroom, Kaycee Lee
Improving Student Engagement Despite Lowering Attention Spans In The Classroom, Kaycee Lee
Senior Honors Theses
Attention spans have been decreasing throughout society for many years, partially due to the constant increase of technological advances. The average human attention span of eight seconds is particularly concerning to teachers and others in the classroom. It does not seem that the average attention span is ever going to increase, so teachers must implement intentional methods and strategies within their classroom to keep their students’ attention. Physical activities, technology and hands-on supports, small group instruction, shorter lessons, making intentional mistakes, flexible seating, and differentiated instruction are all strategies supported by research to improve student engagement within the classroom. Every …

AimTo assess student nurses understanding and skills in the application of antimicrobial stewardship knowledge to practice.DesignQuantitative.MethodsCross-sectional survey.ResultsFive hundred and twenty three student nurses responded across 23 UK universities. Although students felt prepared in competencies in infection prevention and control, patient-centred care and interprofessional collaborative practice, they felt less prepared in competencies in which microbiological knowledge, prescribing and its effect on antimicrobial stewardship is required. Problem-based learning, activities in the clinical setting and face-to-face teaching were identified as the preferred modes of education delivery. Those who had shared antimicrobial stewardship teaching with students from other professions reported the benefits to include …
The Church And Sexual Socialization: A Practical Guide Equipping Youth Ministers To Aid Lgbtq+ Students, Connor Kennedy
The Church And Sexual Socialization: A Practical Guide Equipping Youth Ministers To Aid Lgbtq+ Students, Connor Kennedy
Senior Honors Theses
Sexual socialization is the process by which people learn about their sexual desires and identity. This paper displays the process of sexual socialization as it specifically relates to the youth in the United States. The need for authority on the matter of LGBTQ+ beliefs is established through a biblical worldview. The gap between the church and gender and sexual minority youth is wide, and the problem must be addressed. The author then provides a process and set of beliefs that any youth minister should hold if they desire to aid LGBTQ+ students.

Are They Tools? Anglophone West African Countries’ Students’ Misconception Of Media Literacy And Critical Thinking For Combating Misinformation, Muhammed Jamiu Mustapha, Mutiu I. Lasisi, Victor Vladmirovich Barabash
Journal of Media Literacy Education
This study examines the media literacy and critical thinking levels of students of West African higher educational institutions as tools for combating misinformation in the sub-region. Data analysis using the mediation approach revealed differences in students' understanding of media literacy and critical thinking and partially predicted their efficacy in combating misinformation. This stems largely from a misunderstanding of media literacy and critical thinking concepts as tools, as well as a lack of adequate provision for teaching the concepts and considering them as strategic tools for combating misinformation in the region. The study recommends concrete policy and managerial solutions to the …

The Effect Of Natural Light On Mental Health, Gianna Arquilla
The Effect Of Natural Light On Mental Health, Gianna Arquilla
Honors Projects
All students have experienced low motivation at one point in their academic career, but what are the factors that can affect this? Is it solely based on their personality and work ethic, or can the environment have an effect? This study discusses the effects on mental health through architecture. Can the amount of natural light in a building affect the motivation of students? Natural light is something that is often overlooked, mostly considered as a perk rather than a necessity. How can students truly feel passionate about their work sitting in a dark place? To evaluate this data, this study …

This study examined trauma-informed practices of mental health professionals from eight different countries. The literature indicates that many practitioners feel unprepared and unequipped to therapeutically work with individuals who have experienced trauma-related psychological disorders (SAMHSA, 2014). This poster highlights themes derived from interviews with nine different mental health practitioners from around the globe, offers recommendations to emphasize graduate and post-graduate trauma-informed training, and also offers suggestions for future trauma competencies. The researchers utilized Hermeneutic Phenomenology methodology to analyze the themes from the nine interviews. Common themes identified in the interviews suggest that mental health systems in all nine countries are …

Analyzing Drosophila Melanogaster Circadian Rhythms Using Dam3 And Shiny-R Analysis, Maria Eduarda Couto Dourado, Kimberly D. Rowland
Student Publications and Presentations
Circadian rhythms are changes in behavior over a 24-hour period, that most animals experience. Light and darkness have the biggest influence on the behavior change. (U.S. DHHS). Flies reared in dark environments even more than 300 generations still have circadian rhythms (reference). This study analyzes data from the DAM, which allows us to study circadian rhythms in flies after various treatments and conditionings. Flies exposed to a dark environment for a week after two treatments were analyzed for any changes to their normal patterns. Comprehending the circadian rhythms of Drosophila is essential for grasping the molecular and genetic foundations of …

The following research concerning individuals with ASD aims to understand the perspectives of parents, caregivers, and professionals in the community. ASD is an extensively researched neurodevelopment disorder that accompanies sensory and social difficulties. Pervasive misconceptions surrounding ASD significantly impact the lifelong difficulties of individuals on the spectrum. Frequently marginalized from mainstream society, people with ASD confront the necessity to learn non-autistic ways of communicating, which can cause significant distress. This societal pressure often induces masking, a form of altering habits in order to successfully interact with non-autistic individuals. The following research solicited feedback from parents, clinicians, teachers, and advocates regarding …

Women and non-white individuals are underrepresented in the scientific community. This may be influenced by a lack of diverse representation of scientists in the media. We studied gender and race representation in Google Image search results by classifying the first 100 Google Image search results for scientists by gender and race, and based on the content of the information in the associated webpage. The overall results showed roughly equal representation of males and females, and of white and non-white faces; however, when articles focused specifically on gender were excluded, males made up a larger portion of images. Similarly, when articles …

Islamophobia In Public Schools: A Mixed Methods Look At The Effectiveness Of Parental Ethnic-Racial Strategies In Promoting Resilience Among Muslim Children, Lallia Allali
Dissertations
The ongoing Islamophobic ideology in the United States has magnified discriminatory practices, exclusion, and increased violence toward Muslims (Esposito & Kalin, 2011; Trudo, 2021), and Islamophobia has further disadvantaged Muslim American adolescents through various forms of discrimination against them in schools. In fact, Muslim American students report the highest rate of discrimination across all religious groups, and researchers have found that active family ethnic-racial socialization can often mitigate the negative impacts of discrimination (Hughes et al., 2006; Hughly et al., 2019).
To test this hypothesis, this study was designed to focus on Muslim families’ ethnic-racial socialization practices and the implications …
