Civic Lessons: Public Schools And The Civic Development Of Undocumented Students And Parents, John Rogers, Marisa Saunders, Veronica Terriquez, Veronica Valez

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

In the Court reasoned that by providing undocumented students with core academic instruction, public schools could contribute to their participation in democratic institutions and thus enhance civic life. This article assesses this and a set of related claims. Drawing on three data sets, the authors consider how access to public schools shapes the civic development and civic engagement of undocumented students and their parents. They first introduce data from a longitudinal study tracking the civic development of youth through high school and into adulthood. They then share survey data that indicates the relatively high levels of school participation among undocumented …

Big iDeas 2008 Proposals

In recent years, Dallas nonprofits have received low rankings especially when compared to those located in other metro areas such as Los Angeles, Washington DC, Chicago and Houston. In a city that is growing larger with each passing day it is important that steps be taken to help this struggling sector become more effective in the community and do so in a way that will permit them to thrive. Humanism, Education And Spirituality: Approaching Psychosis With Levinas, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2008

Humanism, Education And Spirituality: Approaching Psychosis With Levinas, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The article investigates the recent turn towards Emmanuel Levinas’ writings in the philosophy of Education. Engaging this turn, the article sets out to develop an ethical, personal and contemplative approach towards understanding and responding to psychosis. By imagining a Levinasian horizon for understanding the experience of psychosis in the Teaching-Learning environment, Levinas’ thought gives hope to take on the work of justice and offer a gift of friendship especially when faced with students experiencing psychosis. The approach towards people suffering the moods and difficulties of psychosis, the article argues, parallels the very spiritual practice of contemplation.

Diversity: A Longitudinal Study Of How Student Diversity Relates To Resilience And Successful Progression In A New Generation University, Adrianne Kinnear, Mary Boyce, Heather Sparrow, Sharon Middleton, Marguerite Cullity

Research outputs pre 2011

This project used the voices of diverse cohorts of students to describe their learning journeys as they progressed through the later years of their degree and into the workforce. The project combined quantitative data from a large student sample with qualitative data from a series of case study narratives to document the students’ perceptions about their learning experiences, the factors underpinning progression in their studies and their transition into the workplace. The project has attempted to answer the question: does diversity matter? Do students of different diversities progress differently, and are there differences in the factors enhancing progression and developing …

Knowledge Of Personal Energy Requirements In College Students, Aurora Maria Buffington Jan 2008

Knowledge Of Personal Energy Requirements In College Students, Aurora Maria Buffington

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study explored whether university students enrolled in health science classes were able to estimate their energy requirements within a range of calories equal to predicted Estimated Energy Requirements (EER) +/- two standard deviations. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and a participant survey were given to a convenience sample of 63 male and 92 female undergraduate students (19-23 years) with subsequent measurements of height, weight and body fat percentage. Results from the IPAQ yielded metabolic equivalents which were converted to physical activity coefficients for use in the EER equation. Students significantly underestimated their EER by an average of 700 …

Analysis Of The Application Of First Amendment Jurisprudence To University Student Fees *Policies, Christine Chairsell Jan 2008

Analysis Of The Application Of First Amendment Jurisprudence To University Student Fees *Policies, Christine Chairsell

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The allocable student activity fee represents a fee imposed by the university administration and is paid at the time that tuition is paid. The administration or the elected student government body representatives disperse these collected fees to groups that have made application for funding and have passed the review process. Sometimes students object to their mandatory activities fees being diverted to certain groups because they are either political or advocate opinions with which the students disagree. Thus, the controversy becomes a free speech challenge; The purpose of this study was to provide a historical case study about the legal controversies …

The Effects Of Students' Asynchronous Online Discussions Of Conceptual Errors On Intentionally Flawed Teacher-Constructed Concept Maps, Magdalena Sas Jan 2008

The Effects Of Students' Asynchronous Online Discussions Of Conceptual Errors On Intentionally Flawed Teacher-Constructed Concept Maps, Magdalena Sas

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Research shows that online discussions are often unfocused and without providing much benefit to students' learning outcomes. One of the reasons behind this phenomenon is the lack of or inadequate scaffolding or guidance provided to students when participating on asynchronous discussion boards. The collaborative misconception mapping strategy is a tool that was designed to mediate cognitive and metacognitive processes via feedback provided by peers and a teacher-created concept map that contains intentional conceptual errors; This study evaluated the effects of collaborative misconception mapping as compared with those of a traditional online discussion activity, where students post responses to discussion questions. …

Towards A Conceptual Framework For Preceptorship In The Clinical Education Of Undergraduate Nursing Students, Melanie Zilembo, Leanne Monterosso Jan 2008

Towards A Conceptual Framework For Preceptorship In The Clinical Education Of Undergraduate Nursing Students, Melanie Zilembo, Leanne Monterosso

Nursing Papers and Journal Articles

A recent study undertaken by the authors (2007) highlighted that undergraduate nursing students were subjected to varying experiences in clinical practice, which were mediated by a number of factors. Mediating factors included continuity of preceptors, student attitudes, the clinical setting environment, student and preceptor expectations of the clinical practice experience and interactions between the student and preceptor.

Of note, interactions with preceptors were seen to 'make or break' the practical experience. Therefore, the relationship that is forged between preceptor and student is vital in shaping the student's experience of the clinical area and of the real world of nursing work. …
