High School Students' Knowledge Of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kaitlyn Danielle Wiles
Student Theses and Dissertations
There is a major gap and disparity in the age in which children are being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Research has shown that several factors can contribute to some children being diagnosed at later ages compared to others. Parental age and education are two factors that have been linked to a later diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to identify and examine high school students’ knowledge of the characteristics and diagnosis of ASD. The primary investigator also examined the differences in knowledge between individuals enrolled in rural and urban area high schools. The study revealed some minor …

The Effects Of Plastics Intake On Drosophila, Gabriela De Moraes, Tal Gir, Carolina Landa Perez, Raymond Mackuol, Kimberly D. Rowland
Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
Drosophila melanogaster is commonly used as a model organism to study countless human health-related issues and concerns (Pandey et al., 2011. From a global aspect, pollution, in all its forms, is an ever-growing concern. In particular, plastics, due to their incapability to decompose, has raised many questions pertaining to the effect this will have on our already struggling planet and ultimately what those effects mean for the human race. Plastics are composed of a group of chemicals known as phthalates which allow the material to be as flexible and durable as it is. Phthalates are also used in a widespread …

Training University Students About Autism Spectrum Disorder Through Outreach To School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists, Joann P. Benigno`, John W. Mccarthy, Sarah O. Taylor, Heather Hamm, Bridget Gornichec Wright
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Training preprofessional students about autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is crucial, particularly since students with ASD are represented on the caseloads of approximately 90% of school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs). When this training can occur within the context of an outreach program, the results of such programming can be mutually beneficial for the individuals served as well as the students. Through the present program, six graduate students and four undergraduate students created materials for 15 SLPs working in the schools in a significantly underserved region of the United States. Students created nearly 800 materials for the SLPs to use in therapy with …

When Is Due Process Due?: The Impact Of Title Ix Sexual Assault Adjudication On The Rights Of University Students, Rachael A. Goldman
Pepperdine Law Review
As a part of the Educational Amendments of 1972, Title IX was created to address sex discrimination in sports programs receiving federal funding. However, its scope has ballooned tremendously over the years to include a variety of conduct occurring on college campuses. Currently, Title IX is the primary legislation governing sexual assault and harassment allegations stemming from universities. This Note explores the use of Title IX in universities and addresses the concerns that arise when a civil rights law becomes the primary mechanism for adjudicating allegations of criminal conduct. Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications
Kentucky experiences the highest overall cancer incidence and mortality rates in the USA with the greatest burden in the eastern, Appalachian region of the state. Cancer disparities in Kentucky are driven in part by poor health behaviors, poverty, lack of health care access, low education levels, and low health literacy. Individuals with inadequate health literacy are less likely to participate in preventive measures such as obtaining screenings and making healthy lifestyle choices, thus increasing their chances of developing and dying from cancer. By increasing cancer literacy among youth and adults, it may be possible to decrease cancer disparities across Kentucky. …
